The world is gradually and inevitably changing as we observed. A lot has been
altered yet many of us are still afraid to adapt to these changes. We cling to things
we used to have and to what we used to be. This lesson will enlighten us that
discomfort is alongside change, but progress is not possible without change. Our
support to the changes that bring the world a better place to live in matters. Let our
actions count!

still recall what you learned by answering the activities below.

always refused, for she did not like him.

One day when she saw Mr. Spider coming again, Miss
Fly closed all the doors and windows of her house and made ready a pot of boiling
water. She waited, and when Mr. Spider called, begging her to allow him to enter,
she answered by throwing boiling water at him. This made Mr. Spider very angry
and he cried, “I will never forgive you for this, but I and my descendants will always
despise you. We will never give you any peace.”

Mr. Spider kept his word, and even today one can see the hatred of the spider

What is It

Have you ever imagined life without your phone? How about having no
internet connection? How far would you go without cars or even a simple bicycle?
Can you live a life without knowing and being known by other people than your
family? What would your life be?

What is Global Village?

Global - relating to the whole world; worldwide

- relating to or embracing the whole of something, or of a group of things

Village–a settlement usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town

Key Concepts of Global Village

A. How was the world before?
 No technology
 Slow transportation system
 Poor connection system
 Routinary daily activities
 Tough life

B. Why did people try to change the world?

 People got tired of slow transportation system, poor communication
system, time consuming paths for fulfilling daily routines, and
tough times.

C. What changes the people brought?

 Inventions of modern technologies, transportation system, high
speed internet connectivity and modern telecommunication
system.
1. Communication
 Telephones
 Cellphones
 Internet – spread of information (literature, news, arts,
sports, etc.)
 Media – television, radio
2. Goods, Foods, and Travel
 We eat food from all over the world.
 We wear clothes and shoes produced in other countries.
 We drive cars made in foreign countries.
 We are able to travel around the world in a matter of
days.

D. How does the world now look like?

 Technology is making the world seem smaller.
 We know more about what is going on in other parts of the world
much more quickly.
 Trade and transportation has become much easier and more
efficient.

10
"The world consider as the single community linked by
telecommunication, is known as the Global Village."
-Oxford American Dictionary

Global Village
“Global Village is the world viewed as a community in which distance and
isolation have been dramatically reduced by electronic media (such as
television and the Internet).”
- Merriam Webster
Interconnectedness
- The decisions made in our country affect the lives of people in other
countries, just as the decisions made in other countries affect us.

Example:
The War in Iraq has increased the World oil prices and our gas has
become more expensive. Therefore, less people are driving large
vehicles, taxis and public transportation have become more expensive,
and they have a greater demand on them.

“Global Village the concept that people around the world can
interact almost as easily as if the world were one large village due to
advances in communications and technology. Advances in technology,
especially in communications and transportation, have brought people
closer together.”

- Although the Earth has not shrunk in physical size, it is smaller

because of advances in communications technology like the telephone
and internet.
- This technology has allowed each of us to have a greater knowledge of
the living conditions of people in other countries.
- As a result, our activities and decisions can have a significant impact
on many other parts of the Earth and can affect people in many other
areas of the world.

Globalization - The complex international relationship of increasing economic

and social interaction.

Challenges of Globalization
As the world grows more globalized, we become more aware of the issues
from globalization that affect people around the world.
Once we are aware of these issues, the challenge is what we should do about
them.

Becoming a Global Citizen

A global citizen is someone who wants to make the world a better place.
Everyone has the potential to act and make the world a better place by speaking
out about global issues and join or start an organization.

11
What’s More

In the lesson discussed, you have learned how the world became a Global Village.
Now, read “The Town of Kamayanan and the Legend of the Dancing Hands” by Boom
Enriquez and find out the underlying global issue emphasized, then share your role
as a global citizen in solving it.

B. Reading Activity

In theTown of Kamayanan and the Legend of the Dancing Hands

Instagram:@townofkamayanan
Up the mount, there
was a town;

Small, tiny Kamayanan.

But those who live, live

like gods; For their
hands, as big as clouds.

When they clap, loud

thunders roar;

When they clasp, whales

move ashore. Sky-high,
they nest among birds;
Keep the peace and
won’t be heard.

CoVully crept out from

caves;

Like a ghost from the

graves.

Spews crowns that

strangle and choke; Till
we can’t breathe,
darkness cloaks.

CoVully presses panic;

Molds gigantic
pandemic; Makes
everyone pale and sick;
Brothers lost, daughters
leave quick!

13
Kamayanan gathers
‘round;
Sweating, trembling,
spirits drowned.

”What to do? Do we lock

down? Hide, duck, cover
till we’re gone?”

Old Turo stands,

reminds tune;

When children play,

mothers croon.

”Wave, weave, woo the

wind, warmth strewn;
Unlock magic, recall
soon.”

Silent whispers then

loud laughs.

Is the aged one mad?

They pass. Young
Kingan jumps, acts on
chance;
”I’ll beat the V, do the
prance!”

Filthy CoVully arrives.

Will Kamayanan
survive?

Kingan steps forward,

locks eyes; He sways,
sings live, saving lives.

Wishy washy, dancing

hands;

With soap, water, come

the suds. Rub palms,
cross fingers;
Wiggle, don’t snicker.
Defeat the virus;

Sickness is minus.

Wishy washy, dancing

hands.

14
CoVully wobbled,
jiggled;

Crowns melted,
swivelled, stunned.
Power unravelled,
rippled;
Do not mess with
handles scrubbed.

Others peep, join in the

hymn;

Jumbo hands snap,

click and spin.

”The key to win is

within.” As CoVully ends
in grim.

Up the mount, our

mighty town;

Well, healthy
Kamayanan.

From then on, we live

like gods; With our
hands, we beat all odds.
