Data Storage
• Metrics are collected at a 10-minute interval and stored for the first
15 days
• Metrics are down-sampled, in which the existing historical data from 16 to
63 days is re-sampled to a lower granularity and stored at a 30-minute
time interval.
• Metrics are down-sampled, in which historical data from 64 to 90 days is
re-sampled to a lower granularity and stored at a 60-minute time interval.
NOTE: When an endpoint is removed from Intersight, the corresponding metrics for the endpoint are retained
in the metric datastore. If the endpoint is claimed again in Intersight it is processed as a new endpoint and to
access the historical metric data of this device, filter the metric query based on the Serial Number of the endpoint.

Use Case: Checking for UCS Domain network
issues
IT administrator has noticed issues with a workload. The administrator must
identify if this is a UCS networking problem. The administrator needs to
verify the single/multiple links between the server and Fabric
Interconnect, as well as between the Fabric Interconnect and
upstream network

#CiscoLiveAPJC BRKCLD-1666 © 2023 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 64
Step 1: Confirm if the link is online
• Check link status using the
Network Interface > Link
Status metrics
• Status of 0 implies that the
link is down and status of 1
implies the link is up
• Setting Minimum for the
Statistics allows to identify
when it is down even for a
short period of downtime
• Choose the FI and the uplink
port number
• Adjust timeframe to
accommodate time of the
issue

#CiscoLiveAPJC BRKCLD-1666 © 2023 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 65
Step 2: Check hardware status of the network
interface
• Identify issues with the
underlying hardware
• Check hardware status
status using the
Network Interface >
Hardware Status
metrics
• Setting Minimum for the
Statistics allows to
identify an issue even
for a short period of
downtime
• Choose the FI and the
uplink port number
• cccccckvljnebfc

#CiscoLiveAPJC BRKCLD-1666 © 2023 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 66
Step 3: Check Network Utilization
• Identify if the link is
overwhelmed with traffic

• Check RX Utilization
using the Network
Interface > Network RX
Utilization metrics

• Setting Maximum for the

Statistics allows to see
maximum utilization per
point on the chart
• Choose the FI and the
uplink port number

• Identify the total network

RX errors

• Repeat this for Network

TX Utilization and errors NOTE: Total Utilization averages both values and might hide potential
problems
#CiscoLiveAPJC BRKCLD-1666 © 2023 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 67
Use Case: Analyzing Energy Consumption
Energy consumption in data centers is often a high cost that is
overlooked. This consumption may also be a factor for environmental
impact. The administrator needs to determine the energy
consumption of your environment

#CiscoLiveAPJC BRKCLD-1666 © 2023 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 68
Step 1: Check Energy Consumption
• Power – Consumption at a
specific instant in time
measured in Watt

• Energy – Consumption
over time measured in
kWh

• Check sum of energy using

Power Supply> Energy >
Sum metrics

• Choose your time interval

for consumption

• Get more details by

grouping this data by host
type or host name

• Leverage the raw data for

further analysis

#CiscoLiveAPJC BRKCLD-1666 © 2023 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 69
Use Case: Capacity Planning

With growing workloads there is also a demand for new infrastructure. To

adapt to this demand, you may have to increase your UCS environment
with a few more chassis. This will lead to increase traffic on the Fabric
Interconnect uplinks. The administrator needs to determine if the current
uplink capacity will be enough to handle the new infrastructure

#CiscoLiveAPJC BRKCLD-1666 © 2023 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 70
Step 1: Check uplink RX or TX Utilization
• Note the uplink ports for
your Fabric Interconnect

• Check the utilization using

the metric Network
Utilization > Network RX
Utilization

• When using Maximum

statistics value, it
condenses multiple values
down to a single point on
the timeline

• Given the utilization for all

devices, filter this this data
down to a specific device

• Choose your time interval

for consumption

• Perform similar analysis for

TX utilization and then for
the second fabric
interconnect
