Pronouns & other words

We change pronouns from I to he/she, we to they, etc., when we change from direct to
reported thought.

We sometimes need to change words that refer to place and time when we change from
direct to reported thought.

Examples:

DIRECT THOUGHT/FEELING REPORTED THOUGHT/FEELING

She thought that she was very happy

“I am very happy today”
that day.

She thought that she was staying

“I am staying here until next Friday.”
there until the following Friday.

DIRECT THOUGHT REPORTED THOUGHT

this that

here there

now then

today that day

yesterday the day before

tomorrow the day after

last Friday the Friday before

next Friday the Friday after

REPORTED THOUGHTS & FEELINGS

When we want to report what someone thought, we can use the phrase

She/He thought that....

The same tense rules apply as for reported speech: we move the thought one
tense into the past.

Examples:

DIRECT THOUGHT/FEELING REPORTED THOUGHT/FEELING

"I am in Turkey." She thought that she was in Turkey.

(Present Simple) (Past Simple)

"We have waited for this train long They felt that they had waited for
enough." that train long enough.
(Present Perfect) (Past Perfect)

He thought that he would wait

"I'll wait another five minutes."
another five minutes.
(Future Simple)
(“would”)

...etc.
Turn the direct thoughts into reported thoughts. Remember to change both the
tense, the pronouns and the time indicator.
