time. If the cars travel in the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If they travel
towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two cars ?

33) A motor boat whose speed is 18 km/h in still water takes 1 hour more to go 24 km upstream than to
return downstream to the same spot. Find the speed of the stream.

Two water taps together can fill a tank in 9 hours. The tap of larger diameter takes 10 hours less

than the smaller one to fill the tank separately. Find the time in which each tap can separately fill the
tank.

Case study based questions are compulsory. (3 questions and each of 4 marks)
36) Vijay is trying to find the average height of a tower near his house. He is using the properties of similar
triangles. The height of Vijay’s house if 20 m when Vijay’s house casts a shadow 10 m long. On the
ground. At the same time the tower casts a shadow 50 m long on the ground and the house of Ajay
casts 20 m shadow on the ground.

i) What is the height of the tower ? 1M


ii) What will be the length of the shadow of the tower when Vijay’s house
costs a shadow of 12 m ? 2M

When the tower casts a shadow of 40 m, same time what will be the length of the shadow of Ajay’s
house ?
iii) What is the height of the Ajay’s house ? 1M

37) Read the following and answer the questions.


The diagrams show the plans for a sun room. It will be built onto the wall of a house. The four walls
of the sunrooms are square clear glass panels. The roof is made using

 One tinted glass panel, half a regular octagon in shape.

i) Find the mid-point of the segment joining the points J (6, 17) and I (9, 16).
ii) Find the distance between the points A and S.
iii) Find the co-ordinates of the point which divides the line segment joining the points A and B in the
ratio 1 : 3 internally.

iii) If a point (x, y) is equidistant from the Q (9, 8) and S (17, 8) then find the relation between x and y.
38) Case study-I.
The school auditorium was to be constructed to accommodate at least 1500 people. The chairs are
to be placed in concentric circular arrangement in such a way that each succeeding circular row has
10 seats more than the previous one.

i) If the first circular row has 30 seats, how many seats will be there in the 10 th row ? 1M
ii) For 1500 seats in the auditorium, how many rows need to be there ? 2M

If 1500 seats are to be arranged in the auditorium, how many seats are still left to be put after 10 th
row ? 2M
iii) If there were 17 rows in the auditorium, how many seats will be there in the middle row ? 1M
