Introductory Message

For the learner:

Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education 7 Alternative
Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Aquaculture Exploratory Module 5 Perform
Basic Calculations.

As the fishes become low of supply more and more fishermen go to the sea
to fish. The constant changes of our climate, the build-up of pollution from farms and
industries contributes to fish shortage in most fishing sanctuary in the world. Another
factor that contributes to a large extent to the declining source of our aquatic life is
the practice of illegal fishing. The rarity of fishes in the open sea makes fish culture
an important activity to sustain the growing demand supply for food production for
human consumption and animal feeds. Hence, Fish Culture is important.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the concepts of fish culture. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The lesson focuses
on how to perform basic calculation. The lesson is focused on how to perform
basic workplace calculation. This includes identifying calculation according to
job requirements, familiarizing with the system and unit of measurements and
conversions, performing accurate calculations of mixed fraction, percentage
and conversions. The success in fishpond operation lies on the knowledge,
skills and desirable attitudes of the fish farmer; thus, this module is written.

This module tackles:

Learning Outcome 5 Perform Basic Calculation

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. check and complete computed number;

2. identify basic calculations to be made according to job requirements;
3. follow appropriate mathematical operations to comply job
requirements;
4. explain how to review and check results obtained in the computation.
and
5. calculate whole numbers, fractions, percentages and mixed
numbers.

Lesson Perform Estimation and Basic
Calculation
5 LO 5. Perform Basic Calculation

This lesson focuses on calculation which means to determine by

computing. It is a process of transforming one or more inputs into one or more
result. Basic calculation in aquaculture is a very important tool in order to
facilitate the completion of a work task.

What’s In

Directions: Test your basic Math. Write your answer in your Aquaculture
activity notebook?

1. Just recently your father harvested 5 kilos of in your

pond at P 130.00 pesos per kilo. How much is the total amount?

2. Ms. Sara owned a production pond. She harvested 12 ½

kilograms and Ms. Cristy bought it at PhP 300.00 per kilo. How much
does Ms. Cristy paid to Ms. Sara?

4
What’s New

Directions: Compute the following. Write your answer in your Aquaculture

Work Activity in Fish Culture that Needs Calculation

Feeding supplemental feeds is essential in fishpond culture if natural
food is not enough.

A. Feeding requirements:
1. Fingerlings, 1st-2nd month: starter pellets (2 times a day)
2. Post-fingerlings, 3rd month: grower pellets (2 times a day)
3. Post-fingerlings up to marketable size, 3rd-4th month: finisher pellets
(2 times a day)
Example:
1000 stock of fingerlings to be feed with starter pellets 2 times a
day, 1 kilo per day at 36.00 pesos/kilo. Compute how much will
you spend for 1 month feeding.
Computation:
36.00 pesos/ kilo x 30 days= 1,080.00 of starter pellets for 1
month

B. Stock sampling
Stock sampling is an important for estimating average fish
weights and standing crop weight. It is also needed to adjust feed
ration for the fish.
Formula:
Average Body Weight (ABW) = total weight at a particular time (g)
total number of fish samples

Sample No. of Fish Total Weight (grams)

1 20 600
2 40 1100

Sample 1: ABW = 600g = 30g

1. If the first number to be eliminated is less than 5, simply drop it (and

the number to the right of it) and let the last significant digit stand.

8
Example: Round off 25.4 mm to whole millimeter
Solution: Simply drop the 4
Answer: is 25

Example: Round off 0.3125 (5/16) into two significant digits.

Solution: The first number to be eliminated is 2: Simply drop it
and all numbers to its right (5)
Answer: 0.31

2. If the number to be eliminated is 5 or more, drop the number, then add

one to the last digit retained.
Examples
a. Round off 78.6 into its nearest ones.
Solution: The number to be rounded off is 6 which is greater
than 5, drop 6 and add one to the last digit retained.
Answer: 79

b. Round off 92.65 into its nearest tenths.

Solution: The number to be rounded off is 5, drop 5 and add
one to 6 which is the last digit retained.
Answer: 92.7

Conversion of Decimals to Fractions

A decimal is changed to a fraction by using 10 or any power of 10 as
denominator of the given decimal. Then change to lowest term when possible.
Examples

A. 0.4 = 4 or 2
10 5

B. 0.25 = 25 or 1
100 4

B. 0.328 = 328 or 82 or 41

Exercises:
1. 5 inches length of bangus fish converted to centimeters.

Computation: 5 inches multiply by 2.54 = 12.7 centimeters

2. 3 meters length of fish net convert to inches.

Computation: 3 meters multiply by 3.281 feet = 9.843 feet multiply by

12 inches = 118.116 inches
3. Harvested 50 kilograms of Tilapia convert it to grams.
Computation: 50 multiply 1000 grams = 50,000 grams

4. 40 liters of gasoline to be refill the vehicle convert it to gallons

Computation: 40 divided 3.787 liters = 10.56 gallons
