CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This study is all about the effects of the financial problem on the academic

performance of the grade 11 students because the researcher’s wants to look for

solutions in able to help the students somehow lessen their problem financially.

And, as a student, researchers are also experiencing the same feeling of being

financially unstable, trying so hard to keep going even though their money is not

enough to afford school projects, requirements, and many more. This research

can be the solution and the voice of every student or even parent in Jose de Villa

National High School who is having a hard time supporting themselves and their

children's financial needs.

The setting of this study is located at Jose De Villa National High

School headed by OIC, School head Angel B. Belleza at Mangauiring, Calabanga,

Camarines Sur. The Hardworking and lovable teachers of this school with a

population of 57 teaching and 3 non-teaching personnel. The students of Jose de

Villa National High school are truly called a disciplined students. Additionally, this

school are exist and has a sustainable learning materials and with have a high

population of 1,301, combination of Senior and Junior high school students.


One of the leading causes that students drop out of college is because of

finances - often due to poor personal money management and it will lead to

negative outcomes including depression, anxiety, poor academic performance,

poor health, and difficulty persisting towards degree completion. (Run Savuth,

2022). (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004) Poverty or financial crises are one of the key

stressors for numerous people. Financial stress defined as someone’s incapacity

to meet the financial responsibilities. (Dang and Bulus 2015) Education is a high-

cost social service therefore insufficient financial support will be a problem for

students to enhance themselves in academics thus leading to poor academic

performance.

This study is all about the effects of financial problems on student’s

academic performance. Last year, the effects of financial problems on students,

increased the number of drops out. Two of the Grade 11 sections last year were

surveyed, one of the sections had 52 students with 4 drop out and the other one

had 50 students with 5 drop out. It is a bit, however letting this happen will

cause a lot of trouble in the future of a student, so it is important to study this

kind of problem.

This study focuses on the effect of financial problem on the academic

performance among grade 11 senior high school GAS students. This study will be
conducted to determine if there is a significant relationship between the financial

problem and academic performance among grade 11 gas students of Jose De

Villa National High School academic s/y 2022-2023 The researchers selected

created questions that are closely aligned with gathering data about financial

problem and academic performance. This study will examine those students

whose affects their academic performance through financial problem.

Nowadays, money is the common problem of the students especially to

those students who are in the higher level. This study aims to find a medicine

and ways that the students can do to lessen their baggage in terms of money.

The researchers knew that this study is a big help for their fellow

students/classmates in Jose de Villa National High School to erase expenses in

the list of their worries.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effects of financial problem on

the academic performance of grade 11 General Academic Strand students in Jose de


Villa National High School, S/Y 2023-2024. Specifically this study seeks to answer the

following questions;

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?

2. What are the ways, a student’s manage their financial problems?

3. Is there a significant relationship between financial problem and the academic

performance of respondents?

4. What are the programs of the school/government to supports the students

who has at most of financial needs?

5. Distribution of Brochure, indicates the importance of saving money and how to

manage financial problem and needs.

Hypothesis

This research will use alternative hypothesis because this believes that

there is a significant relationship between the financial problems and the

academic performance among the students. Lack of money to sustain their

requirements can affect their performance in school in a negative way.

b. Monthly Income

c. Number of Siblings

d. Age

e. Parent’s Occupation

f. State of Living

2. This study assume that using budget will help them manage their financial

problems.

3. This study believes that there is a relationship between financial problems and

the academic performance of students.

4. DSWD can support some of students who have a financial need, because they

advocate and provides needs for the youth.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the effect of financial problem on the academic

performance among grade 11 GAS senior high school students. This study will be

conducted to determine if there is a significant relationship between financial

problem and academic performance among the said grade level of Jose De Villa

National High School academic s/y 2023-2024. This study selected and created

questions that are closely aligned with gathering data about effects of financial
problem and academic performance. This study will examine those students who

have financial problem that affects their academic performance.

This study does not include the junior high students including the Grade 7,

8, 9, 10 and Grade 12 Senior High students in Jose de Villa national high school.

This study also delimit the students in the year of 2022 and below, and also the

other students of the other school as a respondents.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to determine the effects of financial problems encountered

by the grade 11 GAS students in Jose de villa national high school in their

academic performance. This study can serve as help or benefit to the;

Students - after conducting this research, this will serve as a guide to the

students in order to manage and find ways to somehow, lessen their financial

problems.

School/principal - after reading this study, the school will know what events or

activities that can be a huge border to the students and will limit the approval of

activities for the students to not worry too much about the expenses.
Teachers - this study will also serve as an eye opener to the teachers to

understand why those students that having problems in money can't fully

participate on other school activities.

Future students - this study can help the future researchers because this can

serve as their related studies and related literature.

Definition of Terms

Financial Problem - It is a situation in which you are not able to meet your bills

on time or afford necessary basic needs.

- In this research, the word financial problem it is the cause or

the problem were students’ academic performance have been affected.

Effect - something that inevitably follows an antecedent or a cause.

- In this research, it is the word to identify if the result of financial problem

is either negative or positive.

GAS - Is a Senior High School strand that takes on a generalist approach in

preparing students for college.

- In this research, it is the type of students that are going to be the

respondents and will focus on.

Students - A students is a person who goes to school to learn something.


- In this research, it is the respondents.
