Welcome to the first ever article of the (insert newspaper name here) sports section!
Everything you ever want to know about CDA sports can be found in issues of the (newspaper
name again). If you have any questions you would like answered, e-mail me and I will make sure
address them in the next issue. Now time to get to the point of this section.
Fall offers a wide array of team sports for CDA students including cross-country, football,
and volleyball. All the fall sports have storied histories and are seeking to continue their success
into this season. In late October of 2022, the cross-country team returned from Waco with the
school’s first state championship. Highlighted by runners Luke and Patrick Teson, Grayson
Radford, Nathan Langham, and Aidan Hsiao, the team beat the favored Bishop Gorman
Crusaders to earn CDA their first ever state title. Meanwhile, the football and volleyball teams
are looking to make deep playoff runs for consecutive years respectively.
The volleyball team is off to a fiery start in district play with a 4-1 record with their only
loss coming at the hands of Lakehill. After a shaky preseason the Lions are thrilled to be riding a
hot streak through district play as of late. Team captain, Madelyn Weirich, had her eyes not set
on an award the team could earn but instead on growing as a team. She wants the team to “find a
constant” through the early stages of missing the previous seniors as well as “stay consistent” as
she believes that the team’s long hours of summer workouts will pay off. This is coming to
fruition so far and hopefully the Lions volleyball team will ride this wave of momentum deep
into the postseason.
Unlike the volleyball team, the football team has even set higher expectations than ever
before as they feel they have the potential to be great. Their most recent game being a 54-4
blowout win over Cornerstone Christian, only a miraculous 40- yard field goal saving the knights
from being shut out. Injuries, however, have been a concern for the team as Cameron Kirk,
Michael Hurst, and Aiden Bazzell have all missed time with minor injuries so far. Tate Robinson
believes that “if we can keep everyone healthy, we have the full potential to go to state” and later
added that “anything less would be disappointing”. The starting six on offense are Tate
Robinson, Will Cole, JP Dolle, Tre Highers, and Luke Salladin. In Coach Nokes’s play style,
runs are more commonly called as the line opens up massive holes for any of the running backs
or star quarterback Will Cole to run through. Six-man football also requires a lot of two-way
players because of the small team size. Michael Hurst, JP Dolle, Will Cole, and Tate Robinson
also start on defense along with Cameron Kirk and Grayson Radford. This year’s CDA Lion
football team have their sights set on a championship and without injury they may bring home
CDA’s 3rd state championship.
Make sure to come out to support these amazing CDA Lion athletes as they use their gifts
to glorify God and serve the CDA community. Home games in the gym are also free to all CDA
students so show up and have a good time with a few “Boomer Sonner” or “Yee-haw… Haw-
yee” chants. The next home volleyball game is tomorrow, September 26, against Yavneh in the
CDA gym. Also, the next football game is Homecoming this Friday, September 29, so make sure
to turn up with friends and family to urge the team towards victory and kicking off the festivities
of homecoming weekend right.
