NETWORKS NETWORK
Learning Objectives
• Know what is a computer network
• List the uses of computer network
• Understand types of network
• Understand differences between internet and intranet
STAND ALONE COMPUTER
▪ A computer not connected to a network is called stand alone
computer. They must have all the resources (files, programs,
printer etc) exclusively for them to work.
NETWORK – FEATURES
▪ A computer network consists
of 2 or more computers or
electronic devices such as
printers that have been linked
together in order to share
data.
▪ Size of a network can be small
or huge
▪ Can share data
▪ Can share resources like a
printer, a scanner etc.
USES OF NETWORK
▪ Networks allow users to:
▪ Share files
▪ Send emails to each other
▪ Share resources (like printers or scanners).
HOW ARE COMPUTERS LINKED IN A
NETWORK
▪ Computers on networks are usually connect using:
▪ Cables (if the computers are linked together in the same
room/building)
▪ Radio signals (Wi-Fi)
▪ Telephone lines and satellites (for long-range connections).
NETWORK - OVERVIEW
TYPES OF NETWORKS
▪ LAN
▪ Local Area Network
▪ WLAN
▪ Wireless Local Area Network
▪ WAN
▪ Wide Area Network
LOCAL AREA NETWORK
WIDE AREA NETWORK
Ex:INTERNET
INTERNET Vs INTRANET
Internet
• Internet is a global
network of networks
• It’s a public network
Intranet
• Intranet is a network
within an
organization
• It’s a private
network
WIRELESS LOCAL AREA NETWORK
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF A
WLAN COMPARED TO A CABLED LAN
▪ Cabled LAN uses cables to send and receive
data over a network
▪ WLAN provides links that are wireless between
computers and other devices on the network
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER
• An ISP (internet service provider) is a
company that provides individuals and
organizations access to the internet and other
related services
• Example - Etisalat
WIRELESS LOCAL AREA NETWORK
(WLAN)
Advantages Disadvantages
• Radio signals may be weak in some areas
• Cheaper as there is less cabling • Radio signals could be intercepted by hackers
• Easy to link devices to the network • Wireless signals are less reliable
• Work anywhere within the range of • Data transfer speed is not so high
the wireless signal • Other electrical and electronic devices may
interrupt the wireless singals
ISP NETWORK DEVICES
▪ NETWORK INTERFACE CARD - It is a hardware
required for a device to get connected to any
network.
▪ ROUTER - It is a network hardware device
which allows a computer or a network of
computers to connect to the internet.
▪ SWITCH - It is a network hardware device which
allows computers to form a LAN.
