Feed System
The feed system utilizes two separate valves, one for slow feed and
another for fast feed. These valves are both sections of the seven
bank drill and tram valve assembly. Fluid for the slow feed is
delivered by the #3 hydraulic pump. Fluid for the fast feed is
delivered by the #2 pump. Pump #3 is an 11.8 GPM (45 LPM) unit
and #2 is a 15.8 GPM (60 LPM) pump. Fluid for the slow feed is
supplied through the feed priority valve. The priority valve delivers
2.6 GPM (10 LPM) to the slow feed valve with the remainder being
delivered to the ARC, dust collector and boom valve. In a normal
drilling application, the remaining fluid operates the dust collector.
Any increase in the flow allotted to the slow feed will steal from and
affect the operation of the dust collector. There are three settings
required on the priority valve. They are:
Slow feed pressure-----------------------------1990 PSI (140 Bar)
Slow feed volume during drilling-------------2.6 GPM (10 LPM)
Slow feed for rod changing synchronization-------This is set to
allow for proper synchronization
Slow feed relief valve
Slow feed flow control
Slow feed flow control
(Rod changing mode)
Pressure Test Port
The slow feed is activated into either forward or reverse by the feed
controller in the cab. The controller delivers pilot pressure to the slow
feed valve. At the same time, pilot pressure is directed to the fast
feed pilot solenoid valves. The fast feed button found in the top of the
feed control lever energizes these valves. This means that when the
fast feed button is depressed with the feed control lever in either

forward or reverse position, pilot pressure is directed to shift the fast
feed spool into the appropriate position.
Feed pressure is regulated by the feed pressure control found in the
operator’s cab. This valve is a relief valve. Since the amount of fluid
required by the feed motor is relatively small during drilling, excess
flow is directed to the reservoir by the feed relief valve. Feed
pressure is normally in the range from 950-1150 PSI (65-80 Bar).
The Strata-Sense control system also contains a feed pressure
regulator. This set at 1450 PSI (100 Bar) so that feed regulation is
done by the cab pressure control.
Note: When drilling in soft ground conditions, it may be helpful
to reset the feed system as follows:
1. Locate the V1 feed pressure control on the Strata-Sense
manifold.
2. Turn the feed pressure control in the cab all of the way in (CW).
3. Operate the feed lever and bring the bit down to contact the
ground. Leave the lever in the down position. The feed pressure
gauge should indicate 1450 PSI (100 Bar) at this time
4. Readjust the V1 on the Strata-Sense manifold to the same feed
pressure as was previously indicated on the feed pressure gauge.
5. Leave the cab control turned in. Resume drilling. This method
should stabilize the feed pressure.
The feed flow used during drilling all passes through the Strata-
Sense manifold. Fast feed flow bypasses the manifold and is
delivered directly to the feed motor.

Feed Motor
The feed motor is a piston unit with a displacement of 1.44 in.3 (23.6
cc). The motor drives the feed chain through a gear planetary. The
planetary gear ratio is 37:1. The feed motor is mounted at the top of
the drill guide. Directly below the feed motor is the holding valve and
crossover relief valve manifold. The reverse stop valve, which is cam
operated, is found below the valve manifold.
There is no internal brake system in the feed motor unit.
