LTE4581 requirements
The LTE4581 requirements topic has been updated. Paths to the documents which
contain the hardware and software requirements information have been added. A note
indicating that the LTE4581 feature isn't supported by ABIC has been added.
Restriction related to the interworking between the LTE1402: Uplink Intra-eNB CoMP and
the LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature was removed. CoMP can work for UEs which are
scheduled for 64QAM or 256QAM.
The LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature enhances the LTE44: 64 QAM in UL feature
functionality by allowing 256 QAM mode in dynamic data scheduling for PUSCH. With the
LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature, UE UL peak throughput is increased by up to 43% for UL
256 QAM capable UEs (compared to 64 QAM).
For SRAN supported hardware and software, see Single RAN Features/List of Features and
Documents/List of Features Supported in Single RAN.
For ASiR System 5G supported hardware and software, see AirScale Indoor Radio System
5G/ASiR System 5G Features/List of Features Supported in ASiR System 5G.
For ASiR System supported hardware and software, see AirScale Indoor Radio System/ASiR
System Features/List of Features in ASiR System.
The LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature does not support CatM and NB-IoT UEs.
Note:
The LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature isn't supported by ABIC capacity plug-in units.
Don't enable the LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature on ABIC by setting the
actModulationSchemeUL parameter to 256QAMand16QAMHighMCS (it results in
unexpected network behavior).

Background information
Get familiar with the following features and documents:
LTE44: 64 QAM in UL
The LTE44: 64 QAM in UL feature introduces the support of 64 QAM in UL. The LTE4581:
256 QAM in UL feature expands the options for dynamic PUSCH scheduling by
introducing 256 QAM in UL.
LTE System Description Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) and Channel Quality
Indicator (CQI)
Refer to this document to find out more about QAM and the differences between
modulation schemes.
The following terms are used in this document, and they should be understood as follows:
quadrature phase shift keying A modulation technique which allows encoding two bits per symbol
(QPSK) by using four possible phase shifts for a carrier.
quadrature amplitude A modulation system which increases the amount of information that
modulation (QAM) can be carried within a given bandwidth. It provides an increased
number of bits per symbol:
• For 16 QAM - 4 bits/symbol
• For 64 QAM - 6 bits/symbol
• For 256 QAM - 8 bits/symbol
signal-to-interference-plus-noise A ratio that provides information on how strong the desired signal is
ratio (SINR) compared, to the interference and noise.
UE with non-256 QAM A UE which is using a modulation scheme other than 256 QAM during
transmission
UE in 256 QAM mode A UE which is using a new 256 QAM modulation scheme table (3GPP

The UE UL peak throughput for a UE with 256 QAM is increased by up to 43% compared to
64 QAM (for a 20MHz single cell).
The following features must be deactivated before activating the LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL
feature:
LTE48: Support of High Speed Users
Note:
The LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature does not support CatM and NB-IoT UEs.
If a PCell has EN-DC features enabled, the LTE4851 feature becomes deactivated for
EN-DC capable UEs.
The 256 QAM modulation is added to the list of possible modulation schemes for UL. A new
modulation scheme table and the mechanism to switch between the new and the legacy
The LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL expands the LTE44: 64 QAM in UL feature by adding the 256
QAM to the list of possible modulation schemes in UL. The feature is activated with the
Activate modulation scheme UL (actModulationSchemeUL) parameter. The
LTE4581: 256 QAM in UL feature provides a mechanism, based on UE's SINR, to switch
between two different modulation tables which are used for link adaptation (see two
different modulation tables for details).
Figure 1: The mechanism of switching between 256 QAM mode and non-256 QAM mode at the
UE
The performance change after enabling the UL 256 QAM mode is reflected in the counters
described in Measurements and counters section.
There are two threshold parameters responsible for when the UE uses UL 256 QAM (see the
LTE4581 with channel quality monitoring enabled figure for details:
SINR threshold for activating/reactivating 256QAM UL for the UE
(ul256QamReactChQualThr)
SINR threshold for deactivating 256QAM UL for the UE
(ul256QamDeactChQualThr)
It is important to set the threshold parameters carefully. If the air SINR conditions
aren't sufficient for 256 QAM, it is possible that the cell peak throughput and average
cell throughput will be lower after enabling the LTE4581 feature. In such situation,
the ul256QamReactChQualThr and the ul256QamDeactChQualThr parameters
should be set to higher values.
For reference data descriptions, see Single RAN System/SRAN Reference Data.
Alarms

The LTE48: Support of High Speed Users feature must be deactivated (set the PRACH high
speed flag (prachHsFlag) to false).
Procedure
1 Go to the Parameter Editor
Result
The 256 QAM mode in UL is enabled.
You can configure the Activate channel quality monitoring for 256QAM
UL usage (actUl256QamChQualEst) parameter to set the conditions on when
the UE moves to an 256 QAM uplink mode. See the Configuring LTE4581 procedure
for details.
Procedure
1 Go to the Parameter Editor
Result
The UL 256 QAM mode is not available for the UE.
See Configuring features with Web Element Manager for general management tool
instructions.
Purpose
Configure the Activate channel quality monitoring for 256QAM UL usage
(actUl256QamChQualEst) parameter to decide if the UE uses a SINR-based mechanism
when switching to an UL 256 QAM mode or not.
Procedure
1 Go to the Parameter Editor
true Switching to 256 QAM mode is based on the algorithm using signal-to-noise ratio.
The following parameters must be configured:
• Decision period for channel quality estimation for UL
(perUl256QamChQualEst) as required
• Initial decision period for channel quality estimation
for UL (iniUl256QamChQualEst) as required
• SINR threshold for deactivating 256QAM UL for the UE
(ul256QamDeactChQualThr) to a value lower than that of the SINR
threshold for activating/reactivating 256QAM UL for the
UE (ul256QamReactChQualThr) parameter
• SINR threshold for activating/reactivating 256QAM UL
for the UE (ul256QamReactChQualThr) to a value higher than that of
the SINR threshold for deactivating 256QAM UL for the UE
(ul256QamDeactChQualThr) parameter
• PRACH high speed flag (prachHsFlag)
(MRBTS/LNBTS/LNCEL/LNCEL_TDD) is set to false
• PRACH high speed flag (prachHsFlag)
(MRBTS/LNBTS/LNCEL/LNCEL_FDD) is set to false
false UE is configured to UL 256 QAM mode after the UE attaches to the BTS (either
during initial attachment, re-establishment or handover. Signal-to-noise ratio is not
taken into account during this process.
No additional parameters need to be configured.
Result
Depending on the Activate channel quality monitoring for 256QAM UL usage
(actUl256QamChQualEst) parameter setting, the UE uses a SINR-based mechanism
when switching to an UL 256 QAM mode or not.
Equipment preconditions
Activate channel actUl256QamChQualEst false (in 256 QAM in UL) MRBTS/ LNBTS/ LNCEL
quality monitoring true (in UE scenarios with
for 256QAM UL usage
channel quality monitoring
enabled)
Procedure
1 Set the Activate modulation scheme UL (actModulationSchemeUL) to
64QAM.
Result
In the UE trace tool, you should see the following:
UL MCS is up to 28.
TBS index is 26.
Modulation is set to 64 QAM.
A throughput of about 33 Mbit/s with 0% BLER is achieved (for a 10 MHz cell).
Follow the Reference throughput test for a UE with 64 QAM procedure to get a reference
throughput information.
Procedure
1 Stop the UL data transfer.
5 Start the UL traffic. Reduce the attenuation until the maximum throughput is
reached (watch the UL transfer until the traffic becomes stable).
Result
In the UE trace tool, you can see the RRCConnectionReconfiguration message sent to
UL MCS is up to 28.
TBS index is 34.
Modulation is set to 256 QAM.
A throughput of about 50 Mbit/s with 0% BLER is achieved (for a 10 MHz cell).
Procedure
1 Keep the ongoing UL traffic.
3 Set all the channel quality monitoring parameters as required (see the Table:
Parameters configured for LTE4581 verification procedures for details).
4 Increase the attenuation until the SINR is below the threshold defined in the SINR
threshold for deactivating 256QAM UL for the UE
(ul256QamDeactChQualThr) parameter.
Result
After a time period defined in the Decision period for channel quality
estimation for UL (perUl256QamChQualEst) parameter, the
Procedure
1 Keep the ongoing UL traffic.
2 Decrease the attenuation until the average SINR is above the threshold defined in
the SINR threshold for activating/reactivating 256QAM UL for the
UE (ul256QamReactChQualThr) parameter.
Result
After a time period defined in the Initial decision period for channel quality
estimation for UL (iniUl256QamChQualEst) parameter, the
RRCConnectionReconfiguration message is sent from the BTS to the UE. With this
message, the UE is reconfigured to an UL 256 QAM mode (you can check it in UE tracker).
When the UE confirms the reconfiguration, the BTS UL scheduler starts to schedule this UE
according to the 256 QAM mode rules shown in Table: Handling of a 256 QAM capable UE -
MCS and TBS index mapping.
