1. Purpose
The purpose of the health and safety plan aims to identify and maintain the scope of work of
Indalo Electronic Recyclers and the safety management program that would oversee such works.

2. Reference and guidelines


Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993

3. Health and safety policy


Our health and safety policy is a document that governs the duties of both employers and
employees at the workplace.

Health and safety play an integral part of our planning and decision making. Our prime objective
is to supporting each employee’s right to a safe and healthy work environment within reasonably
practicable means.

We are committed to:

 Risk based approach on all processes and function within the workplace to prevent injury
and illness
 Enforcing the hierarchy of control to the best of our ability
 Eliminating risks as far as reasonably practicable
 Implementing controls where risks are present and cannot be eliminated as a whole
 Providing resources to employees to ensure understanding of safety compliance
 Continuous improvement to prevent accidents/ incidents and work-related injury/illness
 Providing resources and training to employees to ensure competency when carrying out
their job functions
 Consultation with employees regarding health and safety at the workplace
 Procedures, policies and training that will equip all employees to work safely

4. Hazard Identification
Indalo Electronic Recyclers will compile a baseline risk assessment detailing the processes
involved and its associated risks. It will then be communicated to all staff and available for review
at any given time.

Task based risk assessments will be compiled for those tasks that do not fall under the baseline
and are not routine tasks. However, the risk assessment will be reviewed if an when any
significant change occurs to the processes.

5. Objectives and Targets


The objectives and targets will be determined as per the management team of Indalo Electronic
Recyclers. This is will be based on the best possible practices that will ensure the health and safety of
all staff.

6. Training, Awareness and Competence
All staff will undergo training and awareness as per their job descriptions together with a
competency assessment and a record kept for reference purposes and to acknowledge
understanding of the training in question. Staff will not be permitted to conduct any such work
where their competency levels are well below the means.

7. Communication
Regular management meetings shall include the aspect of safety at regular intervals.

Toolbox talks should take place on a bi-weekly basis or at reasonable intervals. The purpose of the
toolbox talks will be to enable the superiors to discuss and where necessary provide explanations for
safety related topics in a detailed manner to ensure understanding.

Topics shall be formulated and precise, detailing the points to be discussed and employee responses
thereafter. It should be relevant to work conducted on a daily basis. An attendance register must be
signed to acknowledge understanding.

8. Inspections
Inspections will be conducted at regular intervals guided by the OHS Act and the employer’s
discretion. Records of all inspections must be kept on file and readily available for review at any
point in time.

9. Accidents and Incidents


Any accident or incident whether major or minor (all accidents/incidents involving personal injury,
plant or equipment damage and environmental incidents) must be report to the person in charge as
soon as possible and no later than the end of the shift.

It is the responsibility of the supervisor/manager to fully investigate the incident and determine the
causes thereof. The incident investigation report must be kept on file and communicated to the
management team no later than 24hours after it had occurred to ensure that we prevent a re-
occurrence as far as possible.

In the event that a serious injury, accident or illness has occurred it must be reported to the relevant
authorities.

Where a person has been injured, they must be referred to an appointed first aider for further
assessment and taken to a doctor if required. Where the injury is of a serious nature and requires
medical treatment or attention, the process to file for compensation will be followed.

10. HSE Inductions


Inductions will be conducted as a prerequisite to start work on site, following such a competency
test will be done to ensure compliance and understanding.

Thereafter the induction will be done on an annual basis as a refresher for all employee’s.

11. Safe work procedures


Safe work procedures will be compiled for all tasks on site and communicated to all employees.

12. Personal protective equipment (PPE)


PPE training on issue and use will be included in the induction session. PPE will be issue as per the
guidelines of the OHS Act and as required.

The minimum specified PPE will be required on a daily basis; however, situation specific PPE will be
required dependent on the task. Areas on site will be signposted to guide you further.

13. Fire Prevention


The site will be equipped with fire fighting equipment in accordance to the risk on site. They will be
suitably located at the high-risk areas, with the correct type of extinguishers for that area.

In the event that the fire cannot be contained, the local authorities will be contacted and the
evacuation procedures will be adhered to.

14. Safety Signage


The site will be well equipped with safety signage, indicating the different areas, facilities and
emergency equipment.

15. Waste management


All waste on site will be managed in accordance with the National Environmental Management Act:
Waste Act. The site will ensure that a reduce, reuse, recycle method is implemented. All unwanted
items that cannot follow the above process, will then be landfilled at a licensed facility and all
records kept to ensure traceability.

16. Dust Management


Dust on site, will be managed by means of ventilation where possible and HVAC systems. Where not
possible, PPE will be issued to minimize exposure.
