Bpts Lesson Idea Lis Brown

This lesson plan aims to teach 2nd grade students about the phases of the moon. Students will work in groups to create a digital storybook in PowerPoint demonstrating their understanding of the moon's changing appearance over time. The teacher will model the different moon phases using a light and sphere. Students will then collaborate to write a storyboard before using PowerPoint to illustrate their story. They will present their storybooks to the class. The lesson promotes student voice, creativity, and collaboration through its use of technology.

Lesson Idea Name: Phases of the Moon

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd / Science
Content Standard Addressed: S2E2.d - Use data from personal observations to describe, illustrate,
and predict how the appearance of the moon changes over time in a pattern.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
1.6 Creative Communicator: Students be able to do by the end of this lesson:

observe the moon on their own at home
I will address the element of “expressing (weather permitting).

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I will be able to notice and explain the differences in the moon over time.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson Idea

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will give students creative power and focus on collaborating with others. We will explore
the moon, how it “glows” in the night sky, and how there are different phases of the moon. I will
explain and define those phases, while modeling with a light and sphere in my classroom. Student
goals will be mentioned at the beginning of the lesson and again at the end to make sure we have met
it. The technology used will be the powerpoint app, creating a digital storybook at the end to show
what we have learned. Students will work in groups of 2-4 and will share their story with the class at
the end of the lesson and into the next day.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
After going over our goal, students will listen to instruction and engage in playing with the model
made by the teacher. When it is time to create our stories, the teacher will model how she used a
storyboard to plan out her story and her scenes. This will be modeled in about 5-10 minutes. Students
will then be put into groups or 2-4 and given 20 minutes to collaborate and write their story on a
storyboard. After the story is written, students will be given another 15-25 minutes to complete their
story in powerpoint. The teacher will walk around and help students on this task, as technology will
have its challenges. The strategies used in this lesson are Co-use/Co-engagement, as students are
working together, as well as time-on-task. If the time seems to be too small for students, the time will
be extended into the next day.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This technology tool follows UDL because of its versatility in design, helpful tools and speaking
devices, and clearly labeled tabs. This tool is interactive and enhances learning because of its level of
creativity for all students. This supports action and expression because it gives students a voice in
creating a storybook and bringing it to life.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I feel that they will not only promote independence in learning, but it will also promote
collaboration with peers and problem solving as many students will have different ideas of
what is “best.” I look forward to watching the students plan their stories and practice their
creative writing skills.
