Our Keynote Speaker
Roland (Rolly) Churchill is known to many throughout the EMS field. He began his
career when he joined Town of Watertown Fire/Ambulance in 1975. He became
an EMT in 1976, a Critical Care Technician in 1981 and a Paramedic in 1990. He was
Regional Faculty and taught many EMT classes.
He worked/volunteered for Town of Watertown Fire/Ambulance, South
Jefferson Rescue Squad, Inc., Guilfoyle Ambulance, Rural Metro/AMR and ended his
career after 17 years with Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Squad in 2018.
On August 18, 2023 Rolly went into sudden cardiac arrest. His wife and
daughter initiated CPR. Law Enforcement was right down the road and arrived
within 2 – 3 minutes and took over CPR. Town of Watertown Ambulance arrived
on the scene within 6 minutes and performed 2 defibrillations and had return of
spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Rolly was then transported to SMC, stabilized and
transferred to St. Joes in Syracuse where he underwent a heart catherization and had a stent, he has no
heart or muscle damage and was discharged from the hospital 4 days later.
The takeaway that we want to drive home is the need to provide grant money to allow low cost
CPR classes and a discount on the purchase of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to make them
accessible in our rural areas!
