ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION

This can be defined as the passing of


information from place to place, person to
person using digital and communication
technology; examples are computers, fax
and telephone, mobile phones, etc.
Due to the development in the internet, the
electronic means of communication has
improved; one can stay in touch anywhere,
anytime. People use electronic
communication media to store data, send
files, and send messages to improve work
efficiency.
MEANS OF ELECTRONIC
COMMUNICATION
FAX MACHINE: This is a kind of machine
that converts text and pictures into electronic
signal. When the original copy is put into
the machine, it reads it and converts it into
electrical form and transmits it, when the
recipient receives it, he or she can print it
out using the fax machine.

PHONES: This is the most common used


device. Organizations can send instant
messages to customers and staff verbally or
through text messages wherever they are in
the world. Telephone can only be used to
send verbal messages while cell-phones can
be used to send both verbal and text
messages.
The cell-phone is the most
commonly used communication device. It
can be used to communicate, transfer
pictures, send mail; people can now use their
smart phones to do numerous things when
the use of computer is more expensive
THE COMPUTER: The computer is the
second most common device in electronic
communication. Through the computer, one
can be connected to the internet; the internet
has grown vast since its invention. Almost
every organization has a website which
offers invaluable information about the
organization and its product. The computer
can also make video calls using Skype.
Electronic mail (e-mail) is a kind of letter
that is been sent electronically through the
use of e-mail address, both the sender and
the recipient must have an e-mail address to
make use of the e-mail either to send or
receive mail.
ELECTRONIC FUND TRANSFER: This is
a means of transferring money electronically
using a computerized machine. This can also
be called the AUTOMATIC TRANSFER
MACHINE (A.T.M).
ADVANTAGES OF ELECTRONIC
COMMUNICATION
Mobility: Laptops and mobile phones enable
people to keep in touch with friends and co-
workers, it allows one work and go on-line
wherever even in car, bus, train etc. It
encourages productivity e.g. someone who
has to meet a deadline could save time by
working on a laptop in the bus, car, etc.
Speed and convenience: Electronic
communication is usually convenient and
instantaneous. Document can be safely
backed up online or on the electronic device
to protect against loss or theft. It also
facilitates learning and research.
DISADVANTAGES OF ELECTRONIC
COMMUNICATION
Distraction: Electronic communication can
cause a lot of distraction, compromise
quality time and also damage ones
intelligent quotient. People often feel
compelled to check their mail and text
messages even when they know they are not
working, this can also interrupt employers
and employees outside office hours.
