CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Janelle Cox, author of Body Shaming: Uncovering It and Understanding it, defined

Body Shaming as “the act of making negative comments regarding someone’s weight or size.

People who are overweight are frequently subjected to being “too fat” and people who are

underweight are often criticized for looking “too skinny.”

Body Shaming is a form of bullying, it can also be described as a form of mocking or

humiliating someone based on what we see on their physical appearance. Body shaming

leads to mental health issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. These factors

affect the mental state of students hindering their ability to focus and perform well in doing

school activities which can affect their overall performance in school. As a form of criticism,

Body shaming causes emotional abuse which affects the psychological well-being of a

person, this negative effect hinders our cognitive development to develop.

It is without question that body shaming affects the academic performance of

students. “Body shaming increases the personal insecurities of individuals as it highlights

the weaknesses, especially when it happens in public setting and this may be the greatest

fear as it brings out negative emotions.” (Beevi and Nazeer, 2022). It is stated that negative

emotions come out when a person feels insecure in a public setting. School is not an

exemption for this, being body shamed inside the school campus will increase the

insecurities in ourselves which leads to our negative emotions coming out. These negative

emotions affect our social relationships and sense of belonging which makes us hard to cope

up with academics and can lead to a failing grade.

In our today’s society, people’s judgement on our characteristics always had an

impact on us. These judgements led us on adjusting our characteristics just to fit in on our

society. Standards set by people on what is beautiful and what is not led us to make

decisions that we aren’t sure about and might regret it later. According to Walden, Body

Shaming manifest in many ways, Criticizing your own appearance, another’s appearance in

front of them, and another’s appearance in front them. Body shaming is common in today’s

generation, it doesn’t occur just by another person body shaming you but also you body

shaming your own self. “A fixation with how you look can create unrealistic expectations

that are impossible to achieve.” (Sclugher, 2023). This ideal self that we want ruins our

actual self, we tend to forget about the details which makes us unique and set apart from

others.

This study is conducted to explore the issues concerning body shaming. It will try to

know whether body shaming plays a huge role on the academic performance of the

students. This study will also provide suggestions and coping mechanisms to prevent body

shaming, whether if it is body shaming yourself or other people. It will also give awareness

to everyone about the dangers and effects of body shaming in one’s academic performance

if done without caution.

However, the fact remains that, Body shaming is noticeable in today’s era and has

been affecting our society at large. Students especially are being affected by this form of

bullying, which makes it really hard for them to cope up in academics. They avoid social

relationships and isolates themselves that results to a low self esteem which hinders their

motivation to study. (typeset.io, 2023). Overall, body shaming's negative impacts on

students' academic performance emphasize how critical it is to address this problem and

foster wellbeing and good attitudes in learning environments.
