INTRODUCTION
We recently experienced cases where, during the removal of the fuel studs from the fuel
injection valves, great difficulties were encountered due to the following reasons:
a) Overtightening of the high pressure fuel studs because leaking fuel pipes were tightened
with the aid of extended spanners when the engine was in service to overcome the fuel
leakages.
b) A wrong tightening sequence being applied during assembly of the pressure valve and the
fuel stud.
This Service Bulletin informs you about the proper tightening sequence for the fuel stud and the
valve casing which has to be followed meticulously and about an additional special spanner
which will assist you in removing overtightened high pressure fuel studs.

To avoid later problems with the removal of the high pressure fuel stud (2) from the fuel
injection valve it is of utmost importance to exactly follow the tightening sequence described in
the Maintenance Manual in Group 2722.
It is absolutely essential that the removal or fitting of a non return valve must be carried out
when the high pressure fuel stud is no longer affixed to the fuel injection valve.
Dismantling and assembling of the high pressure fuel stud must be carried out as follows:
Please note: When working on fuel injector valves utmost cleanliness and careful handling of
all relevant components must be strictly observed.
2.1. Dismantling of the Non-Return Valve on the High Pressure Fuel Stud
(Please refer to Figure 1 shown on page 1)
Loosen the valve casing (3) whilst holding the high pressure fuel stud (2) with a spanner to
prevent it from turning. Valve (6) and spring (5) can be withdrawn after the valve casing is
removed.
2.2. Assembling the Non-Return Valve and Fitting the HP-Stud to the Fuel Injection
Valve
(Please refer to Figure 1 shown on page 1)
- Before assembly can be commenced all the relevant sealing faces and threads must be
carefully cleaned and dried afterwards.
- Lubricate the relevant threads of the high pressure fuel stud (2) as well as of the valve casing
(3) lightly with clean lubricating oil.
- Fit nonreturn valve and spring into the casing and screw valve casing onto the high pressure
fuel stud.
- Tighten the valve casing (3) to the high pressure fuel stud (2) with 190Nm
- Prior to fitting the completely assembled high pressure stud (2) to the fuel injector assembly
(1) slightly lubricate the threads with clean lubricating oil but make sure that the relevant
face to face sealing surfaces (SS) on the fuel injector as well as on the high pressure fuel stud
remain clean and dry!
Please note: Do not fit any joints between the face to face sealing surface!
- The completely assembled high pressure fuel stud (2) must be tightened to the fuel injector
with 150Nm fitting the spanner to the hexagon of the valve casing (3).
3. CONCLUSION
It is therefore absolutely essential that not only the tightening torques mentioned above and the
tightening sequence for the high pressure fuel stud must be strictly adhered to, but that also the
tightening torque of 100+10 0 Nm for the high pressure fuel pipe connection (7 on Figure 1, Page
1) is exactly maintained.
Only in this way can any problem with overtightening of the high pressure fuel stud and its extra
time consuming removal as described in paragraph 1 be avoided.
We have so far published the following Service Bulletins which are valid for S 20 type engines:
S-1 dated 18.02.94 / Undersized Bearings and Reconditioning of Crankshaft
