Grammar Points
The focus of this lesson is how to introduce yourself in Japanese.

はじめまして。/ Hajimemashite.
わたしは、[your name] です。 Watashi wa [your name] desu.
よろしくおねがいします。/ Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

はじめまして。/ Hajimemashite.

This phrase means "nice to meet you." It literally means "for the first time." And this is the first
thing often said when you meet someone for the first time. This phrase is appropriate for all
3 politeness levels.

わたしは、[your name] です。/ Watashi wa [your name] desu.

Watashi (わたし) means "I" and wa (は) is a topic marking particle. And desu (です) is the
equivalent to "to be", such as "is" "am" or "are" in English. So, this sentence means "I am
[name]".

よろしくおねがいします。/ Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

This phrase literally means "please be good to me." But it is a commonly used expression
which corresponds to "it's pleasure to meet you."
