Text Types Compendium

The blog post discusses how language shapes thought and perspectives. It argues that the language we speak influences how we think and see the world. It provides examples of how expressing ideas like reading a book requires different verb conjugations across languages like English, Indonesian, and Russian. The post explores how we acquire languages based on our environment and location, and how being exposed to multiple languages from a young age can make learning additional languages easier. It questions whether differences in how languages express concepts like time and gender affect how native speakers of those languages think.

Personal letter

The personal letter is a text type that has a very common use and generally
it’s written by hand and send it to throw mail, this way to communicate was
very useful at a time when the internet doesn’t exist.
It includes name of whos wrote the letter, the addressee, date, and place
of origin.
The purpose is to communicate your ideas, complaints, questioning about
certain topic to a specific person.
The type of audience can be a related person to you like a friend, family,
boss or any authority, also whatever person you want to communicate with.
The context can be if you want to ask a friend that lives far away from you
about his life or catching up about anything.
Example:
Tijuana, Baja California

Dear Kailash Satyarthi,

First of all, we would like to thank you for being a new role model and an inspiration for
us. You made us reflect and value the things that we have, since we have never been in
a difficult situation compared to the children who have been victims of abuse.
We feel very embarrassed for hiding behind excuses like: “there’s no way I could
make a change”, “I'm busy”, “I can’t do anything, I’m too young”. That’s why we need
people like you, we need people who actually make a change, we need better people.
Our own actions could make changes in this world, no matter how small they may be,
but we still have yet to realize that.
After reading your speech we also feel sad. The children that you have saved
from slavery are victims of the 21st Century; they don’t have a house, they struggle for
food and they work for more than 20 hours a day. We are all selfish, complaining that
we are never satisfied with the things that we have, while having access to everything
that we could want and more.
We are aware that it is impossible to stop violence in the world with only one
person, such as yourself, but with your actions, you have shown us that we can make a
difference in the world. So please keep raising your voice to inspire and find support
from all over the world.
Finally, we would like to say thank you.
You are an inspiration with precious values, we all aspire to be like you.
Diary entry
The diary entry consists of a text where you write specifically what
happened in your day, your important thoughts or even something you want
to express. The purpose is to remember your day, and personally, in a
diary, I can see how I thought and my ideology and postures in certain
topics in the past. The type of audience are the persons who are interested
in your life and you.
Context, when you want to ride your memory ́s so people can remember
you.
Example:
Dear Diary,

After I woke up this morning, I made the regrettable decision of waking up. I tried to go back
to sleep, but I could not even relax. Today was one of those days where either I get up, or I
get up. I then decided to go outside, but because it was raining, I got wet. I went back inside,
felt tired enough to go back to bed, but I still had to change out of my wet clothes. Then I
got a phone call from you know who. I got so excited that I didn’t care that I was naked,
tired, and there was a puddle on the floor. We are going on a date this Friday. I don’t know
how I’m going to sleep. What am I going to wear? : naked dance: : singing in the rain: oh
diary, one day I’ll look back on this and say remember when I didn’t pay attention to anything
but the phone ringing. FINALLY.

Speech
The speech is one of the most important text types because whit these you
can express your ideas and try to persuade other people in an oral way.
The type of audience is the one you want to convince or present your ideas
and the context can be Steve Jobs giving a speech about the new iPhone
in 2007.
Example:
Drinking legal age
This has always been a controversial subject around the world, it involucrated ethics, and
morals.
The standard age that countries have for the legal age of drinking is 18 years. But why? And
Who determines this?.
Social standards said that you aren't enough intelligent and mature to ingest this
substance that produces secondary effects in your body, and in most cases it is.
You need to have enough control to know when to stop.
In 2016 the who ( World Health Organization) said that 3 million persons die in consequence of
the abuse of alcohol.
For example countries like Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, and Austria put a minimum
of 16 years old for legal drinking, on the other hand, the United States put a minimum of 21, this
is controversial because in these countries you also can go to war at 18 years.
The beliefs and values are related to this subject because each country has their own
perspective of the age influenced by the beliefs and values
Comparing the United States and Germany we have a difference of 5 years.
In Germany the beer and alcohol have been part of the culture for centuries, this is why they are
more open-minded about this subject and let teenagers drink beer and wine.
On the other hand, the United States has always been a country with many restrictions and
prohibitions, their beliefs and values said that a teenager is capable to drink alcohol at 21 years
but is also capable to go to war and die at 18 years.
Scientific studies reveal that the brain mature till the person is 30 years or even 40 depend on
the person.
In Mexico the legal age is 18 but in my perspective it depends on the person you might
be 40 and not being capable to have the responsibility to drink or a teenager of 14 can have
enough education and mature enough to know the effect of alcohol, risk and the power to
control this effect on his body and also enjoy it because the meaning of life is to enjoy and have
good experiences.
The audience of this speech are teenagers and persons interested in the subject, the
purpose of it is to reflect the legal age to drink and how it depends on the country and their own
beliefs and values. Also the no scent policy of the United States to go to war but not able to
drink alcohol.

I choose this topic because it's controversial in the teenager's circle and sometimes you
questioned why you can't and why maybe 1 year can make the difference between when you
are 17 and 18 what change in you that a year to another you can legally make that. The
language used in the speech is informal and funny because the main audience is teenagers so I
can take their attention.
Blog
The blog is also a way to express your ideas and feelings but in an informal
way, the purpose is to inform and transmit information to the people, the
audience its people interested in what you said but its not much formal.
The context is that you can make a blog if you travel to Germany, for
example, and you are going to tell people your experience and how you
feel.
Example:
Do the languages we speak shape the way we see the world, the way we think, and the
way we live our lives?

Language is the way how humans can communicate, transmit knowledge and their own
perspective about everything, language can be in constant change, also it is an identity
that every person can acquire, for example, a person that speaks, german and Spanish
can have different perspectives in this 3 different languages and can have different
ways to think because every language express different things.
The way how most people learn a new language is going to school, having a teacher
making homework and practicing with personas that speak that language, it also
depends on the location, here in Tijuana is easier to acquire English, because we live in
the border and we can have contact with native speakers and people that can speak
very well that language, also my mom told me that when she was a kid, the television
was all in English because the American television channels were the only one that you
can see in Tijuana.
Also, you acquire/ learn languages depending on your location, for example, if
you live in Mexico your birth language is going to be Spanish if you are from France
your language will be french and so on. But depending on the culture and the context
that surrounds you, the acquisition of languages can vary or even be easier. For
example, a person that lives in Mexico but he grew up in a school where they teach
English as a second language since he was 4 years old, his ability to learn that
language will be easier because in the context he developed speaks English. The way I
acquire English, started when I was living in Monterrey with 5 years old and my school
taught English as a second language, and for me to learn it I had to watch videos and
TV in English, make exercises, sometimes I practiced it at my house with my family,
nowadays I practice my English at my English class, when I go to the US, sometimes I
talk randomly to my family, and watch movies and Tv series in English.
Most questions of whether and how language shapes thought start with the
simple observation that languages differ from one another. This happens a lot, for
example: let’s suppose that you want to say that “Belinda read a book yesterday” So if
you focus on the verb “Read”. If you were to say this sentence in English, we would
have to mark the verb for tense; in this case, we have to pronounce it like "red" and not
like "reed." In Indonesian, you can’t alter the verb to mark tense. In Russian, you would
have to alter the verb to indicate tense and gender. It is clear that language requires
different things from their speakers. From this, we question that if the speaker’s thing
different about the world? Language functions as a filter of perception, memory, and
attention. Whenever we construct or interpret a linguistic statement, we need to focus
on specific aspects of the situation that the statement describes. We speak in two
different languages: Spanish and English. I’ve noticed that when I speak in English I feel
like I am talking like another personality, that I don’t act the same as if I were talking
Spanish. In other words, my “English speaking self” may react differently to an event, to
a problem or the way I say things or understand it differently than my “Spanish speaking
self.”.
