I. Intended Learning Outcomes
With the use of varied learning materials, educational websites and engaging
activities, with 85% accuracy, the students should be able to:
a. Differentiate voiced from voiceless consonants and how their correct usage
impacts the overall clarity and meaning of spoken language;
b. List down words with voiced and voiceless consonants; and
c. Compose a creative writing piece using both normal and inverted word orders
to exhibit proficiency in arranging words and phrases in a coherent and
grammatically accurate manner.
II. Learning Content
A. Topic: Using Appropriate Segmentals of Speech and Using Normal or Inverted Word
Order in Creative Writing
B. Learning Materials:
● Powerpoint presentation as the main learning material to present the contents and
comprehensively discuss the topic; and
● Number and word cutouts for the application activity.

and each group must have a representative. Each group
should form a circle and will be given chalkboards,

chalk, and a rug.
Each representative will be given a word to act out in
front of the class. The first group to guess the word
correctly by writing in the provided chalkboards gets a
point; every member of the group will also receive
chips for participation. The group who will get the
highest point will win the game.
The objective of the game is to relate the used words to
slowly introduce the topic and eventually discuss the
segmentals and the difference between voiced and
voiceless consonants.
C. Analysis After the game, the students will answer the following 15-minute
thought-provoking questions in an oral discussion. duration
Each student will also receive a chip as their token of
participation. The questions include:
● In charades, body language, facial expressions,
and gestures played a significant role in
conveying words without spoken language.
How do these non-verbal cues resemble the
importance of stress patterns and intonation in
spoken communication?
● How did the game "Quiz of Charades" help you
become more aware of the role of non-verbal
communication in conveying meaning?
● Did you encounter any challenges in conveying
certain words through actions alone? How
might using the pronunciation in verbal
communication have helped in such situations?
D. Abstraction Segmentals 50-minute
● The segmental features of speech are discrete duration
units that can be auditorily identified in the
speech stream such as consonants and vowels
(Crystal, 2015; Bauman-Waengler, 2008).

● The portion of speech with relatively constant
phonetic features is called a phonetic segment.
Segments, usually phonological units of the
language, such as vowels and consonants, are of
very short duration.
Consonants
● Consonant sounds are those sounds which are
produced with a Certain degree of obstruction
to airflow or these sounds can be produced
with an obstacle in the airstream.
Voiced Consonants
● The simple definition of the voiced consonants
is the ones that use the voice while being
pronounced. These voiced consonants create
a vibration on the vocal track while
being pronounced.
Examples:
Voiceless Consonants
● The unvoiced consonants do not create
vibration on the vocal track while being
pronounced.

How to identify voice and voiceless consonants
● The differences between voiced and voiceless
consonants can be observed from the
buzzing sound created while pronouncing
a consonant. The difference between certain
consonants can be identified by the use of stress
on each alphabet. For example, pronunciation
of the consonants varies between “s” and “z”.
It can be observed that the local cords vibrate. It
can be easily observed by putting a
hand on the throat and pronouncing “z”.
Similarly, the letters “b” and “v” are
pronounced as voiced and unvoiced
consonants. Between these two letters,
the unvoiced consonant is “b” and the
voiced consonant is “v”. This is because of
the same phenomena that a vibration of the
local vocal cord is felt while pronouncing the
letter “v”
Word Order is a way to arrange the words in the right
order or arrangement. Two ways to structure a sentence
are normal and inverted word order.

Normal Word Order
● The arrangement of words in a sentence
wherein the subject comes before the verb.
Examples:
1. The dog ran down the street.
2. I will never make the same mistakes
again.
3. The students are excited for the first day
of class.
Inverted Word Order
● The verb or part of the verb comes before the
subject in a sentence.
Example:
1. Down the street ran the dog.
2. Never will I make the same mistakes
again.
3. Are the students excited for the first
day of class?
Rules of constructing inverted word order
In constructing sentences, the general rule is that the
subject comes first before the verb, but in some
situations the verb comes before the subject. The
following rules to remember when using the inverted
word order in a sentence:
1. When sentences begin with negative words
such as never, hardly, rarely, the auxiliary verb
precedes the subject.
Wrong: Never I will talk to him again.
Right: Never will I talk to him again.
2. The auxiliary verb precedes the subject in
shortened clauses.
Wrong: The rioters went to the tavern, and the
Pardoner did so.
Right: The rioters went to the tavern, and so did

the Pardoner.
3. When the word precedes the word if, once,
then, after, before, or other adverbial clauses or
phrases, the verb precedes the subject in the
independent clause.
Wrong: Only after the contestants arrive, the
program start.
Right: Only after the contestants arrive, can the
program start.
Wrong: Only if they submit the research, they
will be allowed to graduate.
Right: Only if they submit the research, will
they be allowed to graduate.
4. In the transposed word order used after a
prepositional phrase of place such up, down, in,
and out the verb or the object precedes the
subject.
Wrong: Down the river rare stones and rocks
await.
Right: Down the river await rare stories and
rocks.
Processing questions:
1. Why do you think incorporating segmentals and
different word orders is important in creative
writing?
2. How does word order affect the appearance and
meaning of a sentence?
E. Application The students will be presented numbers in front; each 15-minute
number contains a word and the student chosen will duration
identify whether the word is voiced or voiceless
consonants.
Using the same word, another student – which will be
chosen by the first student – will create a sentence in an

inverted or normal word order and will be challenged
to explain how they came up with the word order.
F. Assessment The students will be asked to answer a 10-item 15-minute
application quiz in a 1 whole sheet of paper to test their duration
proficiency in analyzing the difference between voiced
and voiceless consonants as well as converting the
normal to inverted word order.
Voiced and Voiceless Consonants
A. Recall five English proverbs, song lyrics, quotes, or
any sentences and write them inside the box. Then,
underline the words with voiced consonants and
encircle the words with voiceless consonants.
For example:
1. The kid sees his dad as a hero.
B. Rewrite each sentence correctly on the line.
1. Never Ramon will support the plan of buying a
brand new car next year.
2. Up the skyscraper building the helipad lies.
3. Hardly ever I have seen an honest man like Mr.
Reyes.
4. Rarely a man in his right senses will sell all his
properties.
5. In the chapel the devotees pray quietly.

IV. Assignment
Instructions: Imagine a world where gravity is reversed, where the sky is beneath and
the earth above. Inhabitants of this world, known as "Invertites," have adapted to this
reality. Your task is to craft a short story (300-500 words) that vividly brings this inverted
world to life in a short-size bond paper. Experiment with word order to emphasize the
inversion while maintaining readability and coherence. You will also need to underline 10
voiced consonants and encircle 10 voiceless consonants each. Lastly, you may craft a
creative output using art materials.
