Module 1 – Perspectives on Physical Fitness and Wellness
Introduction
Every human being desires to live longer and happier. Everyone dreams to have this quality of life. But
this kind of life will only come with the right perspective regarding fitness and wellness. The World
Health Organization (WHO, 1995) elaborated and emphasized the vision of the healthy people not only
to focus on the disease prevention and health promotion but also to nurture the quality of life, well-
being and functional capacity of every man. Adopting then a healthy, active lifestyle is a must for
everyone.
Objectives
After working on this module, you should be able to:
1. Define health and wellness;
2. Describe facts about health and wellness;
3. Determine the factors affecting physical activity adherence, and
4. Assess one’s lifestyle to sustain health awareness.
Key Concepts and Activities
FITNESS AND WELLNESS
To most people being healthy means the absence of any diseases. This concept is not complete
if all aspects of wellness will not be covered. Thus, one must be physically, physiologically,
psychologically and socio-culturally fit in order to have a healthy disposition leading to wise decision
making that will aid to a quality life.
Different guides and perspectives of staying healthy discussed from the several resources will
help you come up with real and practical means for getting a better and improved body. You will also
learn some points to assess what makes a workout program succeed or fail by analyzing the factors that
affect physical activity adherence.
The Department of Health (DOH) has taken as one of its priorities since 2003, the
Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles. The campaign promotes the following messages:
1. Don't smoke

2. Regular exercise
3. Eat a healthy diet everyday
4. Watch your weight/Weight control
5. Manage stress
6. Regular health check up
Always remember that a physically active lifestyle plays a great role in maximizing and
maintaining both the physical and mental health of an individual. It is necessary to understand the facts
about lifestyle change.
