Pre-Course Preparation
A thorough knowledge of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea is a
fundamental requirement of the course. In addition, it is expected that you will be proficient in all
competencies for the function at operational level (OOW), including Passage Planning, Parallel Indexing
Techniques, Manual Radar Plotting, Use of Radar, ARPA, ECDIS, AIS and modern Electronic Navigation
Aids.
Pre-Requisites/Entry Requirements
At least 12 months watchkeeping service whilst holding a certificate of competence issued under
Regulation II/1 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended. (Candidates for Chief Mate less than 3,000
gt will be accepted with a minimum of six months watchkeeping service)
Proof of completion of ECDIS course required as follows:
Documentary evidence must be provided on the successful completion of:
a) MCA approved Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator Training (Operational Level) course
completed on or after 01.01.2005; or
b) MCA approved ECDIS course completed on or after 01.01.2005

Students shall verbally confirm on the day that they are fit and well enough to participate in practical
exercises.
Enrolment
Delegates should muster in the Maritime Simulation Centre (EPT) reception at 0845 on Monday
morning.
Please bring proof of ID (driving license or passport) and proof of ECDIS course (either ECDIS certificate
or NAEST(O) certificate issued after 2005), which the lecturer will check during registration.
Delegates will be required to complete an enrolment form for each course that they attend which
includes details such as date of birth/next of kin. All parts of the enrolment form need to be
completed. Relevant certificates will be checked by Lecturers during the enrolment process. Delegates
should bring details of their Discharge Book and Certificate of Competency or Passport. These are
required for registration purposes and for inclusion in the individual course certificates, which will be
issued at the end of the course.
*Visa documentation will be checked as appropriate.
Attendance
For successful completion 100% attendance is required.
Certification
Personal details shown on the certificate are taken from the enrolment form completed at the
commencement of the programme. It is therefore important that all parts of the form are completed
clearly and in full. The certificate will be available for collection from the Student Hub the following
week.
Clothing/Special Requirements
No special clothing is required for this course, however open toed shoes such as Flip Flops are not
recommended for the bridges.
Course Approval
The course is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK). It meets the requirements laid
down in STCW 95 Reg II/2 and STCW Table A-II/2
Course Aim
The aim of the training at this level is to maintain safe navigation through the use of radar, automatic
radar plotting aids (ARPA), electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), automatic
identification systems (AIS) and modern navigation systems to assist command decision-making and the
application of effective bridge resource management principles and procedures.
Course Objectives
At the end of the training, the candidate will be able to:
a) plan a voyage and conduct navigation;
b) determine position and the accuracy of resultant position fix by terrestrial observations
and using modern electronic navigational aids;

c) maintain safe navigation through the use of information from navigation equipment and
systems, including radar and ARPA to assist command decision making;
d) maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation
systems to assist command decision making;
e) manoeuvre and handle a ship in all conditions;
f) coordinate search and rescue operations; and
g) establish watchkeeping arrangements and procedures.
Course Structure and Content
The course takes place over a period of 5 days (38 hours).
It includes classroom-based theory lectures and demonstration. Radar and navigation exercises are
conducted in the Bridge Simulators. Each exercise is concluded with a comprehensive de-brief of the
team’s and individuals’ conduct and of their actions taken.
Course Assessment
The principle aim of assessment is to ascertain whether the student has achieved the stated objectives
of the training to a level which meets and satisfies the performance criteria in the opinion of the
assessor(s).
Assessment is continuous throughout the course.
At the end of the training the student should:
1 take correct (and reasonable) decisions in accordance with the International Regulations for the
Prevention of Collision at Sea;
2 appreciate the dangers inherent in allowing a situation to develop through failure to take early
and positive counter measures;
3 justify actions taken and learn from own actions and those of others;
4 use navigational and collision avoidance data in an interrelated manner for the safe navigation of
his/her ship;
5 obtain and correctly apply data from navigational instruments available to him/her;
6 effectively take charge of own ship when placed in command;
7 react effectively during emergency situations;
8 appreciate any environmental or operational factors which could restrict the manoeuvrability of
own ship or other ships;
9 apply the principles of effective bridge teamwork and resource management.

General Joining Information – Travelling to Warsash Maritime School Solent University, East
Park Terrace, Southampton
Solent University is centrally located making it a great place to study and easy to get to. It is a
10-minute walk from Southampton Central Station and a short walk from the parks, cafes,
shops (including West Quay) and cinemas.

Getting there by car
Southampton sits at the southern end of the M3 motorway. Southampton is just 75 miles
(120km) from London, with excellent road links.
From the North, London and the Home Counties, the M3, M27 and A34 provide fast, direct
road links to the city centre. The A36 is the major route from the West Country, Bristol and
Wales. From the East, follow the A27/M27 and depart at Junction 8.
Getting there by plane
From Southampton International Airport: There are regular buses, trains and taxis from the
airport to the centre of Southampton. Buses and taxis are right outside the entrance; whilst the
train station is located a couple of minutes’ walk away and is called Southampton Airport
Parkway. The airport is approximately 4 miles from Solent University and train services to the
City Centre run frequently with journey times of ten minutes.
Taxis are available from outside the terminal but need to be booked at the taxi desk inside the
airport.
From Heathrow Airport by Train: Take the Rail air coach link from Heathrow airport to Woking
train station. Services to Southampton Central operate from Woking. The total journey time
from Heathrow to Southampton is approximately 2 hours. The Rail air service runs every 30
minutes and picks up from all four terminals. The cost of a standard tick for a single (one-way)

From Heathrow Airport by Coach: The National Express coach services operate from the bus
station at Heathrow Airport to Southampton Coach Station. On direct service the average
journey time is 1 hour and 50 minutes. The cost of a standard tick for a single journey is
approximately £20. Discount coach cards are available for students and young people. For
more information on services to Southampton and discount coach cards, visit

From Gatwick Airport by Train: Train services operate between Gatwick Airport and
Southampton Central the average journey time is 2 hours, and a standard single ticket is
approximately £30.
From Gatwick Airport by Coach: National Express coach services operate from Gatwick to
Southampton Coach Station, via Heathrow (coach changeover). The average journey time is 4
hours, and a standard single ticket starts from approximately £25.
From London Stansted Airport by Train: Rail services operate from Stansted Airport to Central
London via the London Underground. Direct services to Southampton operate from London
Waterloo. The average journey time is 3 hours and 30 minutes, and a standard single ticket
costs approximately £46.
From London Stansted Airport by Coach: National Express coach services operate from the
coach station at Stansted Airport to Southampton via Heathrow and Central London (coach
changeover). The average journey time is 4 hours. A standard single ticket costs approximately
£30
Getting there by Train
Southampton Central Station: is served by direct trains from and to many cities across the
country, including London, Birmingham, Oxford, Bristol, Leeds, Brighton and Manchester.
London Waterloo is a 1 hour and 20 minutes journey to Southampton Central, passing
Southampton Airport Parkway on the way. For other locations, train times and information,

Walking to Campus from the Central Station: It’s a 10 minute walk to the University Campus,
turn right if you exit via Platform 1 and turn left if you exit Platform 4 and walk up the hilly
footpath towards the Civic Centre Building (large white stone building with clock tower). Then
follow Civic Centre Road and New Road until you reach East Park Terrace with Solent University
ahead of you.
Taking a taxi or bus from the station: It is a ten minute taxi-ride to the campus, and there are
waiting taxis at the exit via Platform 4.

Getting there by Coach
National Express runs a coach service from many UK towns and cities to Southampton. For

Travelling by Bus
The campus is served by several city bus companies operating a wide variety of routes in and
around Southampton. The majority of buses stop in the city centre by West Quay, Palmerston
Park (behind Primark), the Civic Centre and the High Street (Above bar Street). More

Southampton Airport and Airport Link Tel: 02392 269 700 is likely to be a more cost effective
for Heathrow and Gatwick Airport pick-ups. Metered taxis at airports may be expensive so pre-
booking is advisable.
Parking
Cars – There is no parking available at the University Campus. However, there are various pay
and display car park spaces nearby. Southampton has 42 car parks, all City Council car parks
are open 24 hours a day and charges apply seven days a week (except Christmas Day and Easter

There is also parking available at West Quay Shopping Centre which is about 15 minute walk
from the University Campus and you can park in the multi-storey for £5 per day.

CCTV
Solent University (SU) uses CCTV and audio recording in some of its simulator and classroom
suites to enhance the teaching and learning experience. The areas where recording takes place
are clearly marked and staff will indicate if recording is likely to be used. All recorded data is
held securely and is only accessed by authorised personnel. Requests for access to data can be
made via staff members. If you do not wish to have data that includes you recorded through
classroom/simulator CCTV systems, you are requested to inform the member of staff
conducting the lecture/training before it commences. SU also uses CCTV systems in public
places across all campuses (including satellite sites, for crime prevention purposes or for
detection of incidents/crime only, for which there is a separate policy. For more information
see the relevant sections of CCTV use on the SU Portal.
No-Smoking Policy
SU operates a no-smoking policy within buildings and an advisory no-smoking zone of 5 metres
from any doors or windows in order to protect everyone from the effects of tobacco smoke.
Smoking is therefore not allowed in any buildings and is only allowed in designated
areas/shelters which are clearly marked or in areas outside 5 metres from doors and windows.
Staff and students found smoking outside designated/allowed areas will be asked to stop or
move.
