Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study
Education is one of the foundations of success. It is an experience that
has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual.
Education has been one of the emphases of the government in the national
struggle to meet the needs of society.
Education is a fundamental human right that provides children, youth, and
adults with the power to grow, reflect, make choices and enjoy a better life. It
breaks the cycle of poverty and is considered the key ingredient in economic and
social development (Jonsson & Wilman, 2001; Peters, 2004; UNESCO, 1997).
The World Education Encyclopedia (2004), identifies three functions that
education is designed to fulfill. First, education is a basic human right which
means that people require education not only for structured information but also
as a tool for gaining skills, attitudes, and values which they can build upon later.
Second, education is used as a means of meeting other basic needs such as
employability and quality of life. The third factor is that education is an activity
that sustains and accelerates the economic development of countries. Education
is a means of investment as it trains and prepares skilled workers at all service
levels and affects every sector of the economy (UNESCO, 1997). “Education
enables individuals to make the transition to new social orders by providing self

Theoretical Background
One of the critical factors that impact the teaching and learning process is
how to design effective instruction that can address diverse learning styles and
academic backgrounds. Learning is evidenced not only in changes in behavior

but also changes in cognitive processes. Effective student learning occurs as a
result of effective teaching strategies, as well as teacher knowledge of the
subject matter. Additionally, a teacher’s clarity, stimulation of interests, and
openness to opinions are other significant factors to manage learning efficiency
and effectiveness. Underlying all of this is the importance of the teacher’s critical
understanding of learning theories and how to apply them to the cognitive,
motivational, and psychological learning process associated with academic
success. Any productive teaching methods or activities are governed by learning
theories, a distinct area in curriculum development and educational practice. In
order to develop effective lesson plans to bring about the attainment of desired
objectives, teachers “must possess a variety of skills and have a solid
understanding of different concepts, ideas, and theories.”
