Final Assignment: Select and present a new DMA in Mekanissa Branch Addis
Ababa
Starting up
- Open a new project in QGIS
- Set the Coordinate system of your project to Adindan – UTM 37 N coordinate
system. (Right lower corner of your screen)
- Load a background with the QuickMapServices plugin
- Load the following shapefiles from the training folder
o Main water pipes
o Mekanissa secondary pipes
o Branches
Select and save Mekanissa branch
- Select Mekanissa branch from the Branches layer
- Save it as a new shapefile called Mekanissa Branch
- Use the coordinate system Adindan for your new shapefile
- Remove the branches shapefile from your QGIS project and only keep your new
shapefile of Mekanissa branch
Setting up your symbology
- Create a good symbology for both of your pipeline layers. Make sure that there is a
clear visual difference between the primary and secondary lines. The pipes should be
different in color and size based on the diameter. Make sure the pipes with a bigger
diameter are thicker on the map than the smaller pipes.
- Create for both pipeline layers a label consisting of Diameter, Material and year of
construction. Make sure that the labels are only visible when you zoom in below a
scale of 1:5000.
Loading the customers
- Load the CSV customers Mekanissa in QGIS
- The coordinates are in GPS make sure you select the right Coordinate system during
importing.
- If imported correctly, save the customers Mekanissa to a new shapefile in Adindan
UTM 37S
- Remove the customers Mekanissa CSV from your QGIS project to keep your project
clean.
Creating a new DMA
- Use your knowledge about DMA selection to select a new DMA within Mekanissa
branch. The DMA should have between 500 and 2500 customers.
- Create a new polygon shapefile called “Proposed DMA Mekanissa” use coordinate
system Adindan UTM 37N.
- Draw in this new layer the outline of your proposed DMA and save it.
- Export your proposed DMA in KML format and open it in Google Earth
Analysis of the DMA
- How many customers are located inside your DMA (hint: Use select by location tool)
- What is the total length of the secondary network in your DMA?
DMA bulk meter
- Create a new shapefile called DMA bulkmeters
- Make sure the bulk meter shapefile has at least the following fields:
o Diameter
o Location
o Type
- Draw the bulkmeters necessary to isolate your DMA on the map and fill in the right
data for each bulk meter.
Map
- Prepare an A4 map of your proposed DMA. The map must at least contain the
following components:
o Map
o Legend
o Title
o Personal details: Name, date, etc.
o Attribute table of bulkmeters
o Scale bar
- Export the map as PDF
Bonus question:
- Give an good estimate, based on GIS analysis, of the total length of service
connections in your DMA. With service connection I mean the line between your
secondary lines and the customer point.
- What is
(We didn’t practice this so use internet to find a solution for this problem)
