The study was conducted among the dental students(Undergraduates &

Postgraduates)of Institute Of Dental Studies And Technologies,Kadrabad,

Modinagar, and Ufter Pradesh afior obtaining clearance from the Institutional

ethical committee.A total of 500 randomly -selected dental students belonging to age

group of 18-30 years were taken as subjects.Students with known hypersensitivity to

lip sticks, with any active or passive lip lesions were excluded from the study. The

relevant demographic data including name, age, gender and blood group were

recorded in a specially designed consent form. The subject was asked to sit in a

relaxed position and the lips were properly cleaned with a cotton swap.Lipstick was

applied with a brush (Fig.11)using a single stroke on the lower lip of the subject.

Over the lipstick the glued portion of cellophane tape strip was placed (Fig.12)and

the subject was asked to press his/her lips together gently. The cellophane tape strip

was removed and stuck to a white bond paper(8.5cm x 6cm)for further analysis

(Fig.14). After the lip prints were acquired, details such as name, gender, age, were

documented on the consent form.Blood group was noted from the colege identity

cards. Each lip print was assigned a serial number. The lip prints were then studied
by

the help of Adobe Photoshop 0.7 software (Fig.15).

4.1.Inclusion and Exclusion criteria:

Inclusion criteria;

· The subjects having full dentition.

· Eruption of last molar was ignored in classifying person with full dentition(as

its eruption is variable)

·Consenting students(Undergraduates &Postgraduates) of L.D.S.T

Modinagar.

Exclusion criteria;

·Subjects with malformation,deformity,inflammation trauma,and surgical

scars (eg.operation for cleft palate)and other abnormalities of the lips.

· Gross deformities of lips like cleft lip, ulcers, traumatic injuries on lips,

angular Cheilitis,lippits,Cheilitisglandularis,Cheilitisgranulomatosa.

·The subject allergic to the lip stick and cellophane tape.

4.2 Armamentarium:

I.For recording of lip prints (Figure.10):

1.Lipstick:Revlon Amazing moisturizing lipstick.264 Red

2.Cellophane tape:Apex packs 365,ISO:2000 certified co

3.3.Bond paper:Royal Excutive Bond Paper Ax4 (cut in to two equal parts

measuring 8.5cm x 6cm)

4.Cotton:Sterilized cotton

5.Scissors:Stainless steel scissors

6.Brush

7.Hand Mirror

4.3 Source of data:

The study samples were collected from the students (Undergraduates &

Postgraduates)of the Institute of Dental Studies and Technologies,Kadrabad,

Modinagar.

4.4 Analysis of lip prints:

The lip prints of each individual were scanned using an image scanner set at a

resolution of 600 ppi.The images were inverted and scanned in grayscale (Fig.16,

17).They were stored as TIFF(Tagged Image File Format)files for maximum details.

The most legible prints of lower lip taken separately was cropped and vertical lines

drawn to divide the lips into 3 parts using Adobe@Photoshop@7.0 sofware as

suggested by Augustine et.?"The lip prints obtained were coded, while noting the

name and gender of the respective individuals. At the time of analysis the gender of

the print was not disclosed

4.4 Criteria for classification of lip prints:

The lip prints were classified using the classification given by Suzuki and Tsuchihashi

(1970)8

Type I:Complete vertical grooves that run across the entire lip

Type I:Partial vertical.Similar to type I but do not cover the entire lip

Type II:Intersecting

Type III:Branching

Type IV:Reticular

Type V:Undetermined/Other.Grooves do not fall into any of type I-IV and cannot

be differentiated morphologically.

For classification the middle part of the lower lip was taken as study area. The

determination of the pattern of the lip was based on the numerical superiority of

properties of the lines on the fragment. In cases where there were two

dominant

patterns, the most dominant pattern was noted for the study purpose.

4.4 Statistical analysis:

The presence study on Cheiloscopy was done on 500 subjects. The statistical analysis

was done using social service (SPSS).Ver.16.0 U.S.A.I.B.M.The frequency of

each type of lip print was tabulated and the percentage of each type was calculated.

The Chi-Square (X?)was applied to test whether there was any association
between
the type of lip print and blood group of the subjects. It is calculated as:
