INTRODUCTION
MAINTAINING PLUMBING TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Maintaining plumbing tools and equipment is a fundamental aspect of plumbing as it ensures that
the tools work efficiently, always readily available for use, and reduce the risk of accidents.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED IN PLUMBING AND ITS FUNCTIONS

A. HAND TOOLS:
These are devices powered solely by human strength and operated by hand without the use of
electricity or other external sources of power. The following are the different types of hand tool s:

1. PIPE WRENCH: an adjustable wrench used for gripping and turning pipes or fittings.

2. PLUNGER: a device used to clear blockages in drains or toilets by creating pressure.

These are devices that are powered by electricity, batteries, or compressed air and are designed to
make various tasks and processes easier, more efficient, and less time-consuming. The following are
the different types of power tools:

1. POWER DRILL - Plumbers use drills equipped with various attachments and bits for
drilling holes in wood, metal, and other materials. They might use them to create openings
for pipes or to secure fixtures.

2. RECIPROCATING SAW - also called as “recip saw”, this power tool features a blade that
moves back and forth, making it suitable for cutting through different materials such as
wood, metal, and plastic pipes.

3. POWER AUGER – also known as “Plumbing Snake”, a power auger is a motorized tool used
for clearing clogs and blockages in drains, pipes, and sewer lines.

4. PRESSURE WASHER - a power tool used for cleaning and clearing drains, pipes, and sewer
lines.

These are crucial for plumbers to effectively connect, secure, and maintain plumbing
systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. The following are the different types of
fitting and joining tools:

1. TORCH KITS - a set of tools used for soldering or brazing copper pipes and fittings to create
strong and leak-proof connections.

2. COMPRESSION SLEEVE PULLER - a specialized tool used in plumbing to remove compression

sleeves from copper pipes without damaging the pipes.

D. DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS:
These are instruments or devices used to identify and troubleshoot issues within plumbing
systems. The following are the different types of power tools:

1. PIPE INSPECTION CAMERAS: Devices used to visually inspect the insides of pipes for issues.

2. LEAK DETECTION EQUIPMENT - Tools like electronic leak detectors or moisture meters help
identify hidden leaks in pipes or fixtures by detecting changes in moisture levels. There are
different types of leak detector equipment, and each type serves a specific purpose and can be
used in different situations depending on the suspected location or type of leak. The following
are examples of leak detection equipment:

 Electronic Leak Detectors: These devices can sense changes in moisture levels or use
sound amplification to detect leaks.

 Moisture Meters: Used to measure moisture content in walls, ceilings, floors, or other
surfaces, these meters can help identify hidden leaks by detecting abnormal moisture
levels.

 Gas Leak Detectors: Specifically designed to detect leaks in gas lines, these devices
sense the presence of gas by measuring concentrations in the air.

 Dye Testing Kits: Often used for detecting leaks in toilets or plumbing fixtures, dye
tablets or liquid dye are added to the water to trace leaks where the colored water
emerges.
