Important notes before we start, please read…
This pattern is very simple, but I recommend that you read the basic instructions before you start.
The pictures will guide and you will be able to check your work as you go.
Slip stitch and fasten off: When working with my patterns you will notice that I will say “sl st
to finish and fasten off” or “fasten off, weave and secure ends” It’s very important to secure and
hide away these tails so that your piece really has that finished look and there's no risk of
unraveling or fraying. So every time these instructions ask you to “fasten off” you will do the
following:
1.- Cut the yarn about 5-6 inches from the hook.
2.- Using your hook, draw the cut end of the yarn through the last remaining loop on your hook.
3.- Pull gently on the tail of yarn to snug up the end.
4.- Thread the remaining yarn tail onto a tapestry needle.
5.- Weave the 5-6 inch tail of yarn up and down through 3 or 4 stitches, like in a zigzag pattern.
6.- Go back the way you came, weaving the end backwards through those same few stitches.
7.- Cut the yarn about 1/4 inch from your project and gently pull... the end will disappear, and
your work is secure.
Sc decrease at beginning of row: when working the nose you will be ask to do a small crochet
decrease. This is how:
1.- Insert hook into first stitch & draw up a loop (2 loops on hook).
2.- Insert hook into next stitch & draw up a loop (3 loops on hook).
3.- Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
After working the sc decrease you will continue working in every st normally.
4
Switch Hooks When Necessary
Sometimes crocheters tend to work either too tightly or too loosely.
Crochet a gauge swatch: to keep stitches consistent and the size of your design on track.
We as crocheters tend to crochet tighter at the beginning and end of rows than in the body of our
work. The gauge for this pattern calls for 8 sc stitches = 2 inches and 8 sc rows = 2 inches, make
your swatch at least 4 inches squared. In that way, you can measure in the center of the swatch
and get an accurate measurement of your normal pace.
Rounds: This hat is made crocheting in rounds, each round will begin with a number of chains
that will be counted some times as the first stitch, and is ended by joining the last stitch with the
top of the beginning st creating concentric circles – slip stitch.
The photo tutorial shows how to make the 6-12 months size. If you are making a size other than
6-12 months you can still follow the same instructions shown in the pictures… the variations are
explained at the end of this pattern base on every size.

sc and finally sl st in last chain. Fasten off leaving enough yarn to sew the piece to the hat.
ASSEMBLING
Believe or not, you are almost done! We will start assembling the hat as followed:
1. Sew in the nose first. Fasten off, weave in and secure ends.
2. Center the eyes and mouth and using your tapestry needle sew them to the hat.
3. Thread your tapestry needle with black yarn and work on the smile and eye lines. Take
your time doing this. If you do it and are not happy with the smile… take it out and do it
again until you are satisfy.
4. For the hair you will now use the Lion Brand Yarn – Red. Cut 40 pieces, 6” long.
Attach the hair to the first red line. Use your hook to pull the yarn and tie as shown in the
pictures.
The number of pieces that you cut is define by the number of stitches on your first round of red –
hair line. For example is you are making size 12-24, the number of pieces will be 44.
Finally it is time for a haircut. Cut Andy’s hair as shown in the pictures.
11
5. Optional: You can add a line of stitches around the edge of the sailor hat.
And you are done!

(13 sts)
Make the eyes, nose and lips for Ann in the same way as shown in Andy instructions.
22
BOW
Change yarn color to: Soft blue.
Row 1: Chain 11, sc in 2nd chain from hook and continue working sc the rest of the chain. Ch 1,
turn. (10 sc)
23
Fold your piece a total of 3 times as show in picture below.
Wrap a long tail of yarn around the center several times and using your tapestry needle, secure
the end.
You can sew directly in to the hat or you can hot glue a hair clip to the back.
ANN’S HAIR
24
1. We need to cut a piece of the bulky yarn-red, that is as long as the diameter of the hat.
the best way to do this is as shown in the picture below. Cut 45 pieces and set them a
site.
2. Place your hat inn top of a circular base ( a flower base works just fine) Thread your
tapestry needle with white yarn and mark with few stitches the center of the head
from back to front of the hat.
3. Thread your tapestry needle with red cotton yarn and start attaching the hair to the
hat.
Use five pieces of yarn at the time and start from the back as shown in the pictures below. The
purpose is to attach 5 pieces of yarn at the time in every round, following the white stitches.
25
Be patience, go slow and secure your stitches. At the end fasten off, weave and secure your
ends.
4. Using the bulky yarn make a chain long enough to cover the center line of stitches
you just finish. Attach the chain from front to back using few sewing stitches. We do
this to cover the stitches and shown a clean line.
5. Divide the hair and make two pigs tails. Use a piece of the bulky yarn to tie them up.
6. Trim her bangs.
26
7. Now attach the bows. You can sew them directly in to the hat or you can hot glue a
hair clip to the back. And you are done!
27
When making Ann, the only think that is different is the top of the hat – HAIR LINE. Work the
eyes, nose, lips and pink cheeks by following the basic instructions early shown in this pattern.

Blocking your crochet projects:
The process of blocking involves shaping and sometimes pinning the crocheted piece into the
correct shape before completing an item.
For blocking items made with acrylic and other synthetic yarns, use a spray bottle with clean
water and mist over the item until it is moist, but not saturated. Pat the item so it is thoroughly
damp. Allow the item to dry completely.
For blocking yarns with wool in it, cotton or linen yarns, shape the item. Then take a damp, clean
cloth and lay it over the crocheted item. Take a steam iron set to the correct temperature for the
yarn, hold the iron about an inch over the item and move the iron above the item until the cloth is
warm.
Do NOT IRON the crocheted item. Remove the cloth AND if the yarn is damp and warm, it is
ready. Remove the cloth and allow the item to dry completely.
Care Instructions:
Hand wash in cool water. Use a mild detergent and allow the hat to soak for twenty minutes,
agitate gently - never squeeze or wring. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry flat. If the hat is
misshapen, reshape as it lies flat and allow to dry.
