Tip: You can simulate the effect of many fixtures with a strong flashlight. For an up lighting effect, hold the flashlight below the object or
surface you wish to light. For a downlight effect, hold it above. Hold a reflector, such as a piece of white cardboard over the flashlight and
place it beside a path to simulate a path light.

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING TECHNIQUES
Correct lighting techniques will highlight your important features and create the perfect amount of drama in a yard. Find out
what techniques work best for your home’s architectural features, garden accents, outdoor living spaces, or backyard oasis.

UP LIGHTING
Creates bold shadows and strong effects by aiming the lights upwards into a tree or
onto an architectural feature. It emphasizes the contrast of dark shadows with bright
light. However, can have a natural appearance when applied skillfully.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT

A spot light is aimed upwards at the feature; typically in the foreground when the
feature is close to house or building and the background remains relatively dark. When
lighting a tree place fixture outside the drip line

MOON LIGHTING
Produces attractive shadow patterns on the ground, and provides a very natural and
soft lighting effect. Place a large fixture with a full glare guard high up inside usually
a tree, and angle downwards. This effect looks like a full moon shining down through
the branches. It is ideal for transition areas, and filling voids in your design.
HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT
Place at least two fixtures high into the tree (min 25 ft.) and aim at a 45 degree angle.
Do not screw in canopy directly to tree to prevent tree rot.

CROSS LIGHTING
Cross lighting can highlight the main feature of your garden and soften the look at the same
time. It lights the feature from two sides defining texture and shape. Eliminating shadows and a
flat appearance when lighting straight onto the feature.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT

Fixtures can be mounted above or below the feature. Both fixtures must be aimed at the same
degree as the other.

PATH LIGHTING
Used to illuminate pathways that provides safe transition between main areas and enhance
landscape elements such as flower beds and shrubbery.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT

Stagger fixtures around walkway to create pools of light that will provide enough
illumination to prevent tripping.

STEP & DECK LIGHTING

Enhances safety and accent design. Used to illuminate changes in elevation, deck edges,
and drop offs. Fixtures can be concealed beneath benches, underneath railing, and as
surface lights on vertical posts and the in the risers of steps.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT

Place fixture in the center of the rise or one on either side depending on the width of the
steps to illuminate evenly and prevent tripping. Place deck fixtures at the entrance of deck,
under benches, and corner posts to create a soft glow that is safe to use.

 GRAZING:
Highlights texture of stone work or tree trunks. Creates an appealing visual with broken shadows and
irregular patterns. Grazing can be combined with silhouetting when planned properly.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT:

Place fixtures approx. 1 ft. from base of wall. Aim away from wall to avoid hot spots or large pools
or light.

SILHOUETTING:
Creates an illuminated backdrop by placing a spotlight behind a feature and aim towards an adjacent
wall.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT:

Place fixture directly behind feature and illuminate the background, to create a silhouette of the
feature.

SPOT LIGHTING:
Used to showcase interesting features, architecture and statuary at night with a focused beam of
light.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT:

Place fixture at the base of the feature and aim to best highlight the interesting shapes it creates.

BACK LIGHTING:
When a fixture is placed behind desired object, emphasizing its shape, and creating ambience.

Place fixture where it is hidden from view and aim to highlight interesting features of plant or tree.

 SHADOWING:
A similar technique to silhouetting, shadowing also places the fixture towards the base of the feature,
aimed towards an adjacent wall. However, the goal is to create a softer shadow, and often works best
with a tree that has open, delicate foliage. The effect of the tree’s movement in the wind is sure to
add drama to any home facade.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT:

Place fixtures directly in front of features producing shadows that are projected onto the home.

MIRROR LIGHTING:
Uses reflective surfaces to create a stimulating visual.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT:

Consider all angles and places fixtures that achieves the best reflections, make sure
you cannot see the fixtures in water or that the glare does not reflect into onlookers
eyes.

WALL WASHING
Wall-washing creates a soothing and even glow that comes off the wall or façade
accenting brick/stone work.

HOW TO GET THIS EFFECT

Place fixtures along the front of the home to create a soft wash of light. Be sure to aim
the fixtures so the light is not glaring into the widows of the home.
