Learn about It!
Syato, Basagang Palayok, and Kickball are examples of
striking or fielding games. Filipinos have played these
activities throughout the years. Some of these games had
always been a part of special celebrations in the
Philippines like during fiesta, birthday parties, and many
other gatherings.

Fig. 3. A boy playing Syato

Syato is a traditional Filipino strike game usually played outside on the grounds where players
will dig a small slanted square hole. It is where to put the small wood so that it sticks out. It
develops not just the physical fitness of the players but also the arithmetic skills since players
need to sum up or multiply the points gained.

Needed Equipment:
● Two wooden sticks: 1 piece of a 3-feet long wooden stick and 1 piece of a 4-inch long
wooden stick.

5
How to Play:
1. Player 1 becomes the hitter and Player 2 as the catcher.
2. Player 1 hits the smaller wood stick with the longer stick so that it catches air enough to
be hit by the stick.
3. The farther the smaller wood drops, the more points player 1.
4. To get the points, measure the distance from the hole to the spot of the smaller stick
using the length of the larger stick.
5. Player 1 risks, may try to add a multiplier to his score by hitting the wood upwards twice
in one turn before striking it forward, the points will then be counted by the number of
wood length instead.
6. While the player 2, has to anticipate and catch the smaller stick to nullify the points and
become his turn or looks forward to Player 1 to miss hitting the wood.
7. The winner will punish the losing player.

6
Fig. 4. The girl is about to strike the palayok

Basagang Palayok is one of the favorite games whenever there are fiesta or birthday
celebrations. A pot, usually made of clay, called palayok is filled with goodies and is suspended
in the air held by a string.

Equipment Needed:
● Hard Stick
● Clay Pot or Palayok
● String

7
How to Play
1. The chosen player is blindfolded and spin around to disorient him or her.
2. After spinning, the crowd will start to give instructions to the player to find the palayok
so he or she can strike it.
3. The player gets one attempt to strike the palayok. Each player should make sure that
they will hit it hard enough for the clay pot to break. If he or she doesn’t break the pot,
another guest at the party can get a chance of playing it.
4. When someone breaks it, it’s a free-for-all, and everyone in the crowd can go for the
goodies.
5. The player who successfully smashes the palayok will be given a prize.

8
Fig. 5. Teens are having fun playing kickball.

Kickball is a fielding game that originated in the United States of America during the early

● Baseball or Softball field

How to Play:

1. Baseball basic rules applied. But there are no strikeouts, leading off, or stealing just like
what baseball has.
2. A game will come to an end once the ball returns to the pitcher.
3. During the game, a player can be taken out of the game if:
● the ball is caught by an opposing team member;
● they are tagged out by an opposing player; or
● the player is forced out at a base by an opposing team.

9
4. To score a run, a runner simply has to safely reach the home plate before the end of
any innings which may vary.

Health-Related and Skill-Related Involved:

1. Eye and Hand Coordination

2. Power
3. Muscular Strength
4. Speed
