MYP Science Lab Report - Jason

The student conducted an experiment to investigate the effect of different water filtration materials on water cleanliness. The hypothesis was that using more filtration material would result in cleaner water. Three materials were tested - rocks, sand, and activated carbon. For each material, 50mL of dirty water was filtered through 20g of the material and the turbidity of the filtered water was measured. The results showed that activated carbon filtered the dirtiest water the cleanest, with an average turbidity of 126mL, supporting the hypothesis. The student concluded that more filtration material leads to cleaner water and that activated carbon is the most effective material tested.

Experiment Report
An investigation into _________________________

Name ____Jason_____________

Problem: The effect of different material ,But the variables remain the same on Is
the more filter material you have the cleaner the water will be.

Hypothesis: If I increase the Additional materials

then the dirty water will be clean

because I've added more filtration material so the water is cleaner.

Background information

Explore what kind of water filter will filter the water the cleanest.

According to the United Nations, about 2.6 billion people do not have enough water for
sanitation purposes (e.g. sewage treatment). Without water for sewage treatment, the
water crisis has led to the mixing of potable water with untreated sewage, which is the main
adverse effect of an inadequate water supply, leading to illnesses and mass deaths among
those who drink contaminated water. The health of children in developing countries is of
greatest concern, with approximately 3,900 children dying of diarrhea every day.

Variable 1: Type of dirty water

Variable 2: Materials used to make water filters
Variable 3:Human factor

Experimental Design: Describe Variables and Control

Independent Variable: Types of filter materials

Dependent Variable: The more filter material you have the cleaner the water will be.

Control: Type of materials, sequences of the materials ,the amount of materials, the

same dirty water ,same volume of the dirty water.

Constant Variables: Every type of materials use 20g.

Dirty water of 50g

Materials List: Be descriptive, such as 10mL graduated cylinder

1. quartz sand 20g

2. raw materials 20g
3. activated carbon 20g
4. steelyard 1
5. dirty water 50ml
6. plastic bottles 3

Procedure: At least ten steps required, five must have numbers

1. Cut the plastic water bottle into a funnel shape with scissors. (Three funnels.)
2. Wrap gauze around the top of the bottle.
3. Put 20g of quartz sand.
4. 20g of activated carbon into the water bottle.
5. stones 20g into the water bottle.
6. Mounded bottle top
7. Pour dirty water from the top down. (40g)
8. Remove the filtered water.
9. Instrumental measurement of TDS
10.Repeat the experiment to get the results.
