Special Micrometers
Special Micrometers
The Special Design Department at S-T Industries was originally established with the purpose
of designing precision micrometers.
The outstanding accuracy, reliability and economy achieved in these micrometers have
led to the design and manufacture of micrometers for applications other than for conven-
tional use.
The micrometers shown are a small sampling of the hundreds of special designs that
have been developed and manufactured for our customers’ unique gaging requirements.
S-T Industries is prepared to design and manufacture micrometers to meet your special
requirements—in any size range and graduations and in a variety of materials.
S-T Industries, Inc. invites requests for quotations on special micrometers.

Precision 1-2-3 Blocks
Precision Blocks are extremely useful in
mounting work for precision grinding,
machining, layout or inspection. Blocks are
precision ground on all six sides to a smooth
and accurate finish. Holes are not drilled in
order to eliminate the trapping of dust and
dirt. The corners are not chamfered to push
particle out of the way on your surface plate.
These precision blocks are sold singly and
measure 1" x 2" x 3" within ± .0001", making
.0002" the maximum possible error existing
between two blocks.
• Quality steel hardened to Rc 58-60
• Square and parallel within .0002"

SEALED IMAGE®
Comparator Charts and Screens
ALL CHARTS AND SCREENS FEATURE THE SEALED IMAGE PROCESS
The Sealed-image process was developed to give maximum life to our precision charts and
screens. A thin sheet vinyl plastic is laminated over the artwork, thereby protecting the image
from wearing off due to use or cleaning.
The lines on charts are made accurate to their center unless otherwise stated on the chart.
Our basic line width is .004" to .005" (.1-.12mm).
Glass screens are used for new or replacement screens for optical comparators. The image is
centered to the OD of the glass to .005". Glass screens are available only for 14", 16", 24" and
30" S-T Industries, Inc./SCHERR-TUMICO optical comparators. Glass screens are
recommended when the artwork pattern will be used for all applications.
Plastic overlay charts are recommended when patterns will be changed frequently. Plastic
charts are available in any diameter up to 30" (760mm). The plastic material is dimensionally
stable, non-flammable and resistant to oil. To avoid distortion, plastic overlay charts should not
be stored above 140˚F (60˚C).
Cleaning - Clean Sealed-image charts and screens with glass cleaner, soap and water or
isopropanol using a soft cotton cloth. Avoid harsh rubbing. Do not use paper towels or coarse
cloths and do not use acetone, benzene, lacquer thinner or other strong chemicals, as they will
damage the surface.
To order glass and plastic charts, use this part number format:
74-XXXX- DD MM
IMPORTANT - When ordering glass replacement screens, please include the model number of
your optical comparator.
SPECIAL ARTWORK - Custom artwork is available on request. We can combine standard
patterns or produce custom artwork scaled from your drawings.
NIST CERTIFICATIONS - Accuracy certifications can be provided at an additional charge.
Please request this at the time your order is placed.

Instructions for Reading English Micrometers
Reading to .001"
A micrometer is operated by a screw thread
having 40 threads per inch. One complete
revolution of the thimble advances one
thread .025" or one line on the barrel scale.
To read a micrometer in thousandths of
and inch, read the visible barrel number with
each additional line representing .025"—
then add the reading on the thimble with
each line representing .001".
Illustrated example:
.375" + .010" = .385"
Reading to .0001"
Thimble A micrometer with vernier scale has ten
divisions on the barrel which equal nine
divisions on the thimble. Each thimble
graduation equals 1/1,000" and each vernier
graduation equals 1/10 of 9/10,000.
To read a micrometer in ten-thousandths
of an inch, read the visible barrel number in
thousandths as with an ordinary micrometer
Barrel with each additional line representing
.025"—then find a line on the vernier scale
Thimble that exactly coincides with a thimble line.
Add the vernier reading to the barrel’s
thousandths, obtaining the actual reading in
ten-thousandths of an inch.
Illustrated example:
.260" + .0005" = .2605"
Barrel
213
Instructions for Reading Metric Micrometers
Reading to .002mm
A metric micrometer with vernier scale has
Thimble five divisions on the sleeve which equal four
divisions on the thimble. Each thimble
graduation equals 1/50 of .5mm or .01mm;
each vernier division is 1/5 of .01mm or
.002mm. The difference between a thimble
division and a vernier division is .002mm.
When the zero lines of the vernier exactly
coincide with thimble lines (Figure 1), the
Barrel number on vernier lines is the difference
between the vernier line and next thimble
Thimble line in .002mm. As the line numbered “4” on
vernier coincides with the thimble line, the
thimble has moved .004mm.
Using Figure 2, determine millimeters to
nearest .01mm as with ordinary metric
micrometer. Then find the line on vernier that
exactly coincides with a thimble line. The
adding of the vernier reading to the .01mm
Barrel reading results in actual reading to .002 of a
millimeter.
Illustrated example:
6.13mm + .006mm = 6.136mm
