CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter introduces the problem of the study and presents the important settings

needed to be guided in conducting the research.

1.1 Background of the Study

According to the Oxford Dictionary, Reading Comprehension is the ability to read

and understand the text or sentence. Reading, basically, is essential for people to acquire
knowledge and new information. Moreover, Comprehension is the ability to interpret and
absorb information from reading content.

Reading Comprehension is the process of constructing meaning by coordinating a

number of complex processes that include word reading and work knowledge and fluency,
(Harris and Graham 2007). According to Perfetti, et al., (2005), Reading Comprehension
requires the coordination of multiple linguistic and cognitive processes including, but not
limited to, words reading ability, working memory, inference generation, comprehension
monitory, vocabulary and prior knowledge.

One of the problems in our country involves the poor reading comprehension of the
students. In December 2019, the nation was thrown into an uproar by the release of the 2018
Program for International Students Assessments (PISA) Report, which stated that high school
students in the Philippines got lower scores in reading comprehension than most of those
survey in other nations. Based on the findings, over 80 percent of the said study, the
Philippines ranked last among 79 countries (www.manilatimes .net)

The most typical academic learning problem for students, particularly at-risk students
and those with individuals who struggle, is reading comprehension, according to several
experts. The majority of the curriculum in the early grades is focused toward developing
emerging literacy and other language-based skills, which causes difficulties for students with
reading deficiencies.

According to Department of Education, Alternative Learning System (ALS), is a

parallel education system that gives out-of-school youth and adult (OSYA) learners the
chance to improve their functional and basic reading skills as well as access comparable
pathways to finish their basic education.

In local setting, the researcher observed that the students are experiencing struggles in
terms of reading comprehension. Therefore, the difficulties in reading comprehension may
affect their academic performance. As a result, in order to address the issues with reading
comprehension, learning strategies that can motivate students to improve their skills must be
revised.

This study aims to determine the reading profile of ALS students of Curuan District
based on the Phil-Iri reading level: Independent level, Instructional level, and Frustration
level. Along with understanding of Reading comprehension, it needs a better and advance
attention on enriching students reading skills, and it effects and benefits on academic
performance and building skills of students.
1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study mainly aims to determine the reading comprehension of Alternative

Learning System (ALS) Students. Specifically, this study aims to:

1. Identify in what level does the ALS students has in reading comprehension in
terms of:
a. Independent Level
b. Instructional Level
c. Frustration Level
2. Identify the word reading score through to their miscues of the following gender:
a. Male
b. Female

This study aimed to emphasize more about the Reading Comprehension and the

reading level, which also includes its role of to the students’ lives especially its

contribution on enhancing their reading skills and boosting their academic performance

inside a classroom that can be used in their future careers. Its significance also is to guide

and help understand Reading Comprehension’s purposes in their lives as a student for

parents, teacher, and other stakeholders.

Students

The significance of this study is to benefit the students in a way that they can identify

the reading level they have in reading comprehension that can help develop their reading

skills and can boost their academic performances.

Parents

The significance of this study is to help the parents encourage and be part of their child’s

reading activities to boost reading skills and academic performances.

Teachers

The significance of this study is to help teachers understand more about the importance of

reading skills to students in order for them to also help and support the students in terms of

engaging more in reading activities

Other Stakeholders

have an idea about the effects of reading comprehension to students to use to participate in

the said institution.

1.4 Scope and Delimitation

The study took place within the classroom setting of Alternative Learning System of

Curuan District: Buenavista, Curuan, and Panubigan, Zamboanga City.

The researchers will have at least 30 respondents focused mainly within Curuan

District.
