 What is Input?

Data entered into a computer via some form of input device.

 What is an Input device?

Any specialized hardware peripheral component that allows the entry of data
and instructions into a computer.

 What is a Peripheral?

Any hardware device connected to and controlled by the CPU.

 What are some Input devices?


o Keyboard
o Mouse
o Track pad
o Joystick
o Light pen/ Digital tablet
o Scanner

 What is the use of a Keyboard?


o Allows entry of letters, numbers, or symbols.
o Key presses can execute computer commands.
o Used in office applications that require text entries.

 What is the use of a Mouse?


o Moves a pointer on a screen by:-

— Clicking- Selecting an item on the screen or pull down menu.

— Double Clicking- Used to open a document or program.

— Right Clicking- Displays a list of commands on the screen.

— Dragging and dropping- used to move a document or text.

 What is the use of a Track pad?


o Move a pointer on a screen on Laptops.
 What is the use of a Joystick?
o Moves a pointer on a screen according to the movement of the lever by
the user.
o Used when playing computer games.

 What is the use of a Light pen/ Digital tablet?


o Used like a pen to draw but works with light and a monitor.
o Used with a digital pen.
o Used to:-

— Capturing handwriting directly.

— Captures input from designers and graphic artists.

 What is the use of a Scanner?


o Captures digital images and inputs it into the computer as text,
diagrams and pictures.

 What is a Bar Code Scanner?

Automated data that scans black and white lines, thin and thick with numbers
at the bottom, giving information when scanned. Used in groceries and retail
stores.

 What is Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (M.I.C.R)?

Mainly used in the banking industry to read data on cheques.

 What is a Optical Mark Reader (O.M.R)?

Senses the position of marks and converts them into information. Used in
lottery forms, multiple choice questions and questionnaires.

 What is Optical Character Recognition (O.C.R)?

Automated data that recognizes the shape of each character. Used in e-books.

 What is a Magnetic Strip Code?

Magnetic tape in a plastic card to store data like someone's name, balance
etc.
 What are Smart Cards?

Has a microchip containing data like account number, balance etc., on it to


make it more secure and it difficult to copy. E.g. Debit and Credit cards.

 What is a Digital Camera/ Web camera?

Takes digital images and videos. Used for video messaging on like WhatsApp
and Skype.

 What is Voice Recognition?

When a computer system accepts spoken words as input for processing.

 What is a Biometric System?

Automatic identification of a person by their physical characteristics like


fingerprint, facial recognition, iris and voice.

 What is a Microphone?

Accepts and changes sound waves to electrical signals then to digital signals
for a computer.

 What is a touchscreen?

Computer pointing technology with the sense of touch. Used in graphical


tablets.
