USB Port Driver Installation
Instructions for Microsoft Windows
    Introduction
The following instructions for USB driver installation are specifically for the Microsoft Windows® operating system.
Some steps may be different and some screens may be changed depending on the version of Windows you are using.
These instructions apply to the following devices:
           ➤ SEL-311C Transmission Protection System ➤ SEL-351S Protection System
            ➤ SEL-351-5, -6, -7 Protection System ➤ SEL-651RA Recloser Control
            ➤ SEL-351A Protection System ➤ SEL-651R-2 Advanced Recloser Control
            ➤ SEL-351RS Kestrel Single-Phase Recloser ➤ SEL-T400L Time-Domain Line Protection
                 Control ➤ SEL-T401L Ultra-High-Speed Line Relay
    Installing the USB Port Driver
Step 1. Connect the device to your PC with an SEL-C664 cable or any standard A-to-B USB cable.
Your PC will recognize that a new device has been connected and will likely be able to locate the proper
driver automatically. The following message will be displayed, indicating that Windows is setting up the
                 SEL Fast CDC USB Device.
If the Windows operating system successfully installed the USB port driver, you will see the following
message, indicating the device is ready.
The USB port driver is now installed, and a new virtual COM port (e.g., COM3) is ready for use. Refer to
Step 10 if you require additional verification that the USB port driver was successfully installed. Other-
wise, the installation is complete and no further steps are necessary.
NOTE: In some cases, the Windows operating system may not be able to automatically install the USB
port driver. In this case, close the Found New Hardware Wizard (if it is activated), and follow Step 2
through Step 4 to manually install the USB port driver via Windows Update over the internet on
Windows 10 and newer versions of the Windows software, or follow Step 5 through Step 9 to manually
install the USB port driver from files. If you are unable to install the driver, it may be because of the com-
puter policy set by your organization, and you should contact your system administrator for assistance.
Step 2. Open the Windows Update settings by entering Windows Update settings in the Windows search bar
               and selecting Windows Update settings.

2
Step 3. Select View optional updates.
NOTE: For certain versions of Windows, you may need to select Advanced options first. If the View
optional updates option is not available, proceed to Step 5 through Step 9 to manually install the USB
                   port driver from files.
Step 4. Expand Driver updates. Check the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc. – Ports item and select
                Download and install.
The USB port driver is now installed, and a new virtual COM port (e.g., COM3) is ready for use. Refer to
Step 10 if you require additional verification that the USB port driver was successfully installed. Other-
wise, the installation is complete, and no further steps are necessary.
NOTE: If the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc. – Ports option is not available, the USB port driver
may already be installed; proceed to Step 10 to verify. Otherwise, you will need to install the USB port
driver manually by following Step 5 through Step 9.
Step 5. Retrieve the SEL Fast CDC USB Driver Package folder from the Software Downloads page or the appro-
priate product page on the SEL website at selinc.com, from the corresponding Product Literature CD, or
from the ACSELERATOR QuickSet® SEL-5030 installation CD. Copy the folder to any convenient direc-
                tory, such as C:\SEL\Drivers\Device_USB\.
Step 6. Open the Windows Device Manager by entering device manager in the Windows search bar and select-
                ing Device Manager.

Step 7. Expand Ports (COM & LPT), right-click USB Serial Device, and select Update driver.
NOTE: For certain versions of Windows, the USB serial device may appear under Other Devices and may
be labeled SEL Fast CDC USB Device.
Step 8. Select Browse my computer for drivers.

4
Step 9. Select Browse and select the location where you copied the SEL Fast CDC USB Driver Package folder in
Step 5. Ensure the Include subfolders option is checked. Select Next.
Step 10. Verify that the driver has been successfully installed. The SEL Fast CDC USB Device should be listed in
the Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT).
The USB port driver is now installed, and a new virtual COM port (e.g., COM3) is ready for use. The
Device Manager updates the available COM ports each time a cable is inserted or removed.

    Testing the USB Port
To test the USB port and the newly installed driver, follow these steps:
Step 1. Launch QuickSet, and select Communications > Parameters from the menu, or select the
Communication icon from the opening screen.
For more information on QuickSet for the SEL-300 Series Protection System, SEL-300 Series Recloser
Control, and SEL-600 Series Recloser Control products, see the PC Software section of the respective
product instruction manual. For more information on QuickSet for the SEL-T400L and SEL-T401L, see
the Engineering and Operator Access Interfaces and Tools section of the respective product instruction
                 manual.
Step 2. Select the new COM port created by the driver installation process, e.g., COM3.
Ignore other settings like Parity and Data Speed. They do not affect how the USB port operates and are
only presented to the operating system to retain compatibility with certain applications.
Step 3. Select Communications > Terminal from the menu or select the terminal icon on the tool bar.
Step 4. Log into the device normally.
The USB port should work similarly to an EIA-232 port, only much faster. See the product instruction
manual for the connected device for more information about the USB port.
