Read The Text Below!!

The Impact of Broadcasting on Society: Positive and Negative Effects

Broadcasting is the distribution of audio or video content to a large audience through

different platforms like television, radio, or the internet. It is a form of mass communication
that reaches a vast and diverse audience with the help of specialized technology. Broadcasting
plays an essential role in the dissemination of information, entertainment, and education to the
masses. In this text we will discuss the history of broadcasting, the different types of
broadcasting, the impact of broadcasting on society, and the future of broadcasting. The history
of broadcasting can be traced back to the late 19th century when Guglielmo Marconi first
transmitted wireless signals across the Atlantic Ocean in 1901. However, it was not until the
1920s that broadcasting became popular. In 1920, the first commercial radio station, KDKA,
was established in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the first radio broadcast of a presidential
election was made in the same year. By the end of the 1920s, radio had become a primary
source of entertainment and information for the masses.

Television broadcasting began in the 1930s, and the first television station was
established in New York City in 1939. However, it was not until the 1950s that television
broadcasting became popular, and it soon became the dominant form of broadcasting. In the
1990s, the internet emerged as a new platform for broadcasting, and streaming services like
Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video became popular. There are several types of
broadcasting, including television broadcasting, radio broadcasting, and internet broadcasting.
Each type of broadcasting has its unique characteristics and audience. Television broadcasting
is the most popular form of broadcasting. It involves the transmission of visual and audio
content through television sets.

Television broadcasting includes both free-to-air channels and paid channels. Free-to-
air channels are channels that can be accessed by anyone with a television set and do not require
any subscription or payment. Paid channels, on the other hand, require a subscription or
payment to access. Television broadcasting is a significant source of entertainment, news, and

ENGLISH FOR ISLAMIC BROADCASTING COMMUNICATIONS 4

information for people worldwide. It has a vast and diverse audience, ranging from children to
adults. Television broadcasting has a significant impact on society, shaping the opinions and
beliefs of people worldwide.

Radio broadcasting involves the transmission of audio content through radio waves. It
is the oldest form of broadcasting and was popular before the emergence of television
broadcasting. Radio broadcasting includes both commercial and non-commercial stations.
Commercial stations make money through advertising, while non-commercial stations are
funded by donations from listeners. Radio broadcasting is an essential source of news,
entertainment, and information for people worldwide. It has a vast and diverse audience,
ranging from children to adults. Radio broadcasting is particularly popular in rural areas, where
television broadcasting may not be accessible

Internet broadcasting involves the transmission of audio or visual content through the
internet. It includes both live streaming and on-demand streaming. Internet broadcasting has
become increasingly popular in recent years, with the emergence of streaming services like
Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. Internet broadcasting has a vast and diverse audience,
ranging from children to adults. It is particularly popular among young people who consume
most of their media through the internet. Internet broadcasting has revolutionized the way
people consume media and has disrupted traditional forms of broadcasting. Broadcasting, the
distribution of audio or video content to a large audience, has had a significant impact on
society. From the earliest days of radio and television to the current era of internet broadcasting,
the way in which we consume and interact with media has changed dramatically. In this article,
we will examine the positive and negative impacts of broadcasting on society.

One of the most significant positive impacts of broadcasting is its ability to disseminate
information to a vast and diverse audience. Broadcasting has played a vital role in informing
people about current events, political developments, and social issues. News broadcasts have
been a primary source of information for people, allowing them to stay informed about what is
happening in the world. This has helped to create a more informed and engaged citizenry,
which is essential for the functioning of a healthy democracy.

Broadcasting has also had a significant impact on education. Educational programs,

such as documentaries, science programs, and historical dramas, have been an essential part of
the broadcasting landscape for decades. These programs have helped to educate people about

ENGLISH FOR ISLAMIC BROADCASTING COMMUNICATIONS 5

a wide range of topics, from science and history to culture and the arts. Educational
broadcasting has been particularly important for those who may not have access to formal
education, such as people living in remote or impoverished areas. One of the negative impacts
of broadcasting has been its role in perpetuating stereotypes and prejudice. Television programs
and movies have often portrayed certain groups of people in a negative light, perpetuating
harmful stereotypes. This can have a profound impact on how people view these groups,
leading to discrimination and prejudice. For example, African Americans, Hispanics, and other
minorities have often been portrayed as criminals, drug dealers, or other negative stereotypes
in movies and television programs.

Regarding to the high education curriculum which is based on the standardized KKNI,

POLITICAL COVERAGE IN THE NIGERIAN BROADCAST MEDIA: THE NEED

FOR PROFESSIONALISM

Globally win or lose election for the electorate, which by extension is the American
society. So it is with the British press, the German press, the Swiss press and lately but
affirmatively the Ghanaian press. This is so because there is a high degree of trust and credence
in the mass media/press. Conversely, these national presses/media in realizing the high
responsibilities thrust on them have striven to ensure that their coverage of political and other
ancillary issues are done for the greater benefit of society. So, it is not surprising that such
attitude has had a consistent positive rub-off on other cardinal areas of national life and
development in these countries. For instance, the Cable News Network (CNN) and other
American media coverage of the campaign trails of the Republican Party candidate, John
McCain and the Democratic Party candidate, Barack Obama across the US as part of the run
up activities to the November 4, 2008 presidential election is a compelling case in point where
the media were, to a large extent, chief deciders of the outcome of the election. This present
effort is an attempt to chart a similar course for the Nigerian society. It seeks to capture the
dynamics of broadcast media coverage of politics in Nigeria through a historicization of the
process. To achieve this it adopts a historical-analytic methodology to exfoliate issues relating
to political coverage in the broadcast media and the need for professionalism in the country.
But before delving into this, it may not be superfluous to attempt a clarification of the operative
terms in the unfolding discussion.

Clarification of Operative Terms

Political Coverage: In media parlance, political coverage has to do with the attention
given to a political event, issue or topic by newspapers, radios and televisions in their news
reportage. It is activities of political parties, politicians as well as set agenda for political
activities, especially in democratic settings for the greater good of society. In this discourse,
we shall restrict ourselves to the broadcast media coverage of political activities in Nigeria and,
if need be, some other democratic climes.

ENGLISH FOR ISLAMIC BROADCASTING COMMUNICATIONS 12

Broadcast Media: The broadcast media constitute a major plinth of the electronic
media which is the twin of the print media in the mass media/press architecture. Some scholars
(Dennis, 1992; Tosanwumi and Ekwuazi, 1994; Baran and Davis, 2000) contend that the
electronic media tower above the print because of the innovative mechanical devices deployed
as well as their degree/level of impact on society. However, that is a matter for another
discussion.

Democracy: The term democracy has no settled meaning. Oyovbaire (1987) and
Owolabi (1999) assert that democracy connotes image as well as reality of politics for different
political systems, rulers, citizens, actors and scholars and that is ostensibly why defining the
concept is problematic. In fact, the concept of democracy has been subjected to infinite debates
over the centuries (Olojede, 2006). Its relative and elusive “nature” is further underscored by
Fitile and Adejuwon’s (2010) assertion that democracy has been an object of diverse
interpretations, depending on people’s political persuasions and ideological leanings.

Professionalism: Essentially, professionalism has to do with the maintenance or

keeping abreast of professional standards by concerned persons in specialized areas of human
endeavours such as the media profession, the teaching profession, the medical profession, to
mention a few. It also has to do with the skill, competence and character which are expected of
a member of a learned profession such as the media profession. In this regard, we will busy
ourselves with the ethics of the journalism profession, with particular attention on the broadcast
media industry and how it has fared in the Nigerian mediascape or surround.

Task 18

The broadcast audience

Broadcasting has somewhat removed the communal aspect of performances as people
watch or listen to broadcasts in their homes rather than in public places such as movie theaters
or concert halls. This may contribute to the weakening of social ties, as it takes away another
opportunity for socializing. The importance of this removal of social ties was made clear in the
work of Emile Durkheim, who wrote of the phenomenon known as anomie, which describes a
state of normlessness brought about by lack of human contact and belonging.

The anonymous nature of the broadcast market now, however, allows for the refinement and
expression of exact tastes, as audience members do not have to defend or publicize their
viewing or listening to any type of program as it is in the privacy of their home.

While the viewer may remain anonymous, the content of the material that enters homes has
significant impact on human lives. Although there are constraints on the information allowed
to be broadcast, many of the scenes in television programs showing news, current affairs, or
interviews with celebrities, may shock viewers and change their outlook on life, either of those
within their own country or in distant parts of the world. Disasters, such as the Indian
Ocean tsunami of 2004, which took over 200,000 lives, and HurricaneKatrina, which
devastated New Orleans in 2005, were reported instantly around the world. This led to greater
awareness of the victims' suffering and outpourings of disaster relief efforts. The phenomenon
of "embedded reporters" during the 2003 invasion of Iraq allowed live scenes of military action
to be broadcast continuously on television. The broadcast images shown on television channels
such as CNN, which included the bodies of slain Iraqis, literally brought home the reality
of war to many households. Such experiences put a face on the otherwise anonymous victims
of natural and man-made disasters.

CHAPTER 6

I. READING

Task 21

Read The text below and using the word given in bold type form a word that fits into the
space. There is an example at the beginning!

Recorded versus live broadcasting

Broadcasting may be recorded or live. The former……… (allow) correcting errors, and
removing superfluous or undesired material, rearranging it, applying slow-motion and
repetitions, and other techniques to enhance the program. However, some live ……. (event)
like ……… (sport) telecasts may include some of the features of recorded shows, such as slow-
motion clips of important features of the game, in between the live action.

American radio network broadcasters habitually forbade prerecorded broadcasts in the

1930s and 1940s, requiring radio programs…… (play) for the eastern and central time zones
to be repeated three hours later for the Pacific time zone. This restriction was dropped for
special occasions, as in the case of the German dirigible airship Hindenburg at Lakehurst, New
Jersey in 1937. During World War II, prerecorded broadcasts from war correspondents …….
(were, was) allowed on U.S. radio. In addition, American radio programs were recorded for
playback by Armed Forces Radio stations around the world.

A disadvantage of recording is that the public may know the outcome of an event from
another source before the recording is broadcast. An advantage of ……(record) is that it
prevents announcers from ……. (deviat) from an officially approved script, as occurred
with propaganda broadcasts from Germany in the 1940s and with Radio Moscow in the 1980s.

Many events are……. (advertis) as being live, although they are often "recorded live."
This is particularly true of performances of musical artists on radio when they visit for an in-
studio concert performance. This intentional blurring of the distinction between live and
……….(record) media is viewed with chagrin among many music lovers. Similar situations
may appear in television, when a show is recorded in front of a live studio audience, and
perhaps broadcast a few hours later (such as late-night variety shows).

Task 29
The question is based on the following text !

Over a dozen journalists resigned on December 1 from Hong Kong Cable Television
Limited, a major subscription-based TV station in Hong Kong, in protest after the media
company fired 40 editorial staff in what is perceived as a political crackdown. Those laid off
include the head of the China desk and the entire team of the award-winning News Lancet
program. The broadcaster cited financial reasons for the layoff, a claim the newsroom staff
rebuked. The entire China desk, a total of 12 people, has since resigned in protest, along with
the heads of the international and finance desks and the newsroom's chief assignment editor.

The layoffs were sudden and took immediate effect — those who were sacked were
told to leave the office on the same day. In shock, members of staff gathered outside the room
of the news director demanding an explanation. Among those laid off was Wong Lai-ping,
former deputy news editor at the China desk. On a radio interview aired on December 2, she
rebuked the management's claim that the decision was made out of financial difficulties,
remarking that in August, the management fired the then-executive director Fung Tak-hung
and replaced him with four new managers. Wong said that the new management often made
editorial requests, such as live broadcasts of China's foreign minister's regular press conference,
or modifying headlines. According to Wong, the newsroom staff refused to comply with such
requests.

The Hong Kong Journalists Association commented on the layoffs, “Given the [New
Lancet] team's coverage of the police and administration, it's difficult not to see this as
minimizing sensitive reporting in the name of cost-cutting”.

1. Based on the text, the trigger of this resignation end masse is the belief that ….

A. the previous layoffs were politically motivated

B. financial reasons affected the layoffs the most
C. the journalists could demand for higher salary
D. political crackdown barely prompted the layoffs
E. the management’s disapproved of staffs’ refusal of demands

ENGLISH FOR ISLAMIC BROADCASTING COMMUNICATIONS 34

2. Dealing with the issue discussed in the text, the statement above may lead the readers
to the assumption that …

A. The management’s claim should have been accepted by all parties.

B. The decision to fire Fung Tak-hung was taken with well-consideration.
C. The director Fung Tak-hung was not as competent as four new managers.
D. There was an illogical situation to claim financial difficulties as the reason for the
layoffs.
E. The management tried to cover up their financial difficulties by cutting the number
of employees.

CHAPTER 10
I . READING
Task 37
Although speech is generally accepted as the most advanced form of communication,
there are many ways of communicating without using words. In every known culture, signals,
signs, symbols, and gestures are commonly utilized as instruments of communication. There is
a great deal of agreement among communication scientists as to what each of these methods is
and how each differs from the others. For instance, the basic function of any signal is to impinge
upon the environment in such a way that It attracts attention, as, for example, the dots and
dashes that can be applied in a telegraph circuit.

Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication through these dots and
dashes—short and long intervals as the circuit is broken—is very great. Less adaptable to the
codification of words, signs also contain agreed upon meaning; that is, they convey information
in and of themselves. Two examples are the hexagonal red sign that conveys the meaning of
stop, and the red and white swirled pole outside a shop that communicates the meaning of
barber. Symbols are more difficult to describe than e it her signal signs because of their intricate
relationship with the receiver’s culture perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a the
provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval. In other cultures, if done in unison,
applauding can be a symbol of the audience’s discontent with the performance. Gestures such
as weaving and handshaking also communicate certain culture messages.

Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they also have a major
disadvantage in communication. They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the
sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. Without an exchange of ideas, interaction comes
to a halt. As a result, means of communication intended to be used across long distances and
extended periods must be based upon speech. To radio, television, and the telephone, one must
add fax, paging systems, electronic mail, and the internet, and no one doubts but that there are
more means of communication on the horizon

Alex had always been fascinated by the world of broadcasting and dreamed of becoming a

Every day after school, Alex would rush home and turn on his small radio. He would
listen to the local radio station, captivated by the voices that filled the airwaves. He admired

II. SPEAKING

Task 46

A : Hey, have you ever wondered how radio communication works?

B : Yeah, it's always fascinated me. I mean, how can we hear someone's voice
from miles away through a little device?

A : Exactly! Radio waves are the key. They carry the signals that transmit sound
from the radio station to our radios.

B : That's interesting. So, how does the radio station send out these waves?

A : Well, the radio station has a powerful transmitter that converts the audio
signals into radio waves. These waves are then sent out through an antenna.

B : Ah, I see. And our radios have antennas too, right?

A : Yes, that's correct. The antenna on our radios receives the radio waves and
converts them back into audio signals that we can hear.

B : So, it's like a two-way communication, right? The radio station sends out the
waves, and our radios receive them.

A : Exactly! It's a form of wireless communication that allows us to listen to

music, news, and other broadcasts.

B : That's amazing. I never realized how complex the process is.

A : It's quite fascinating, isn't it? Radio communication has been around for a
long time and has evolved over the years.

B : I can imagine. It must have played a significant role in connecting people

before the internet and smartphones.

A : Absolutely. Even today, radio communication is still widely used, especially

in emergency situations or in areas with limited infrastructure.

B : That's true. It's a reliable means of communication when other methods may
not be available.

A : Definitely. So, the next time you turn on your radio, remember the incredible
journey those radio waves have taken to reach you.
