Students will be grouped and rotate through different stations, including a teacher-directed worksheet, an online matching game about famous people, and an independent BrainPop video about good citizenship. Formative assessments include exit slips to help the teacher understand what students are learning and identify areas needing more instruction. The goal is for students to research a national figure for a end of year project and learn how these individuals helped shape and better the United States.

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Important American National Figures
Objectives:
- Students will be able to compare and contrast different American national figures who
demonstrated civic dispositions like honesty and respect.
- Students will be able to examine various online and in person resources to collect
information on American national figures who demonstrated civic disposition.
State Standards:

2.CG.2 Use primary and secondary sources to research a national figure who demonstrated civic
dispositions.

This indicator was developed to encourage inquiry into past and present national figures who
demonstrated civic dispositions (i.e., compassion, cooperation, empathy, honesty, and respect) by
exploring a variety of sources, such as children’s literature, historic documents, photographs and
images, or news sources.

Context:
This lesson is for the second grade. I am teaching this lesson because students have and need to
learn about the important people who did positive things for our country. During this unit
students would have already learned about certain important time periods or wars that were
taking place. They also would have knowledge on what civic dispositions are and what
characteristics make up a good person. They will bring in their personal knowledge of what good
and bad are and use that to determine the person they choose. Students will then learn about how
these people changed the ways of the United States and that their civic dispositions were
something to be proud of and made the county better as a whole. This lesson is in preparation for
students learning about political powers and how there are positions a person can have and
represent.
Data:
Students will be grouped together based on their grades from the previous exit slip that is given
at the end of each class. This might not put them in perfect groups but it can help me as a teacher
be able to spend time with each group as needed and maybe challenge some students and help
others. Like every other lesson there will be an exit slip presented to students at the end of the
lesson. The information from the exit slips will be used next time for my group data and how
students will be put together. This helps me know what was learned and what was confusing for
some of my students. I can later use this information to change my lesson around, or re-think
how I will teach it.
Materials:
Smartboard, History notebook, Pencil/pen, Teacher computer, Student Ipad, Teacher directed
worksheet, brainpop, youtube, google forms,

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
As class begins I will instruct the students to take out their ipads and a notebook and add pencil.
Students will be directed to the board where I will instruct them through their class period and
ask some questions like “who is your favorite famous person?” or “Who do you think represents
respect and honesty?” This will allow students to think about who they think are important
people to them.I will have students put into groups based on their overall grades in the class. The
groups will be directed to a starting station based on a number given by me, and from there they
will move from station to station completing the assignment related to our lesson unit.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
During this teacher directed time students will be given a worksheet created by me to help them
better understand what National figures are and what they represent. Students will individually
with my help fill out this worksheet and determine who they want to talk about during their end
of the year project on a national figure who displayed civic dispositions. This time will be used
to answer specific questions any students may have about other stations or the worksheet. This is
important for me as a teacher so I can understand where my students are in learning the content.
Collaborative (15 minutes):
In this collaborative time students will pick a partner in their group and grab one Ipad to play the
game. Students will follow this linkFamous People: Matching Cards Educational
GameABCmouse.comhttps://www.abcmouse.com › games › view-games › f… that will be posted
to the google classroom page. The students will work together or agents one other to match these
famous American figures.
Independent Digital (10 minutes):
During this independent time students will watch this short BrainPop Jr video
Brainpop Jr. How to be a good citizen. And then answer the questions on the google form posted
to the google classroom page. This independence time is used so students can have a minute to
be with themself and figure out what they know and what they need to focus on more. Using the
data from the google form is necessary to my teaching so I know what my students understand
and what they need more help on.
Closure (10 minutes):
After students have been to each station and completed the work assigned they will be given
their exit slips. The exit slips are a series of questions that relate to the lesson we are learning and
what was going on during class. The students complete this at the end of every lesson so I know
where they are and so they squeeze in as much information as possible. The grouping earlier was
based on the exit slip from the lesson before and their grades. This is a great way to know how
students feel about the lesson and the way we are teaching it. This gives the opportunity for my
students to express how they feel about my teaching and the activities I choose for them.

Rationale: Multimedia 1
https://www.abcmouse.com/games/view-games/famous-people-matching-cards~23530
I chose this game on this website because it gives the students something fun to do in game
form. This supports my objectives because my students show their learning by winning and
getting excited to learn when they know the answers to the questions. Online games give
students at all different ages a chance to figure out what they know and what they don't.
Multimedia 2
I chose the brainpop video from youtube to be watched because I think brainpop does a great
way to explain things to younger children. This helped give my students another perspective of
learning and helped me understand what they could pick up from a video. Students sometimes
find watching videos the easiest way to learn and remember new information. I personally
watched brainpop growing up so I know it's a reliable source for my children.
