STEM - BC11LC IIIc 2

The plan reviews the definition of continuity - that a function f(x) is continuous at x=a if (1) f(a) exists, (2) the limit of f(x) as x approaches a exists, and (3) the limit equals f(a). Examples are provided to illustrate. Students then practice evaluating limits in groups and individually to determine continuity. The goal is for students to accurately solve real-world problems involving continuity of functions.

LESSON PLAN ON BASIC CALCULUS 11

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of limit and
continuity of a function.

Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to formulate and solve accurately real-life
problems involving continuity of functions.

Learning Competencies: Determine whether a function is continuous at a number or not.

THE EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION

1. Review

2. Presentation (I do it)
The teacher will start the discussion by stating the goal that is to determine whether a
function is continuous at a number or not and with the definition:

A function f(x)I is said to be continuous at x=a if all three of the following conditions
are satisfied:

(1) f(a) exists;

(2) Limx→a f(x) exists;
(3) Limx→a f(x) = f(a) exists.

Example:

At x = 2, f(x) = x2 + 1 is continuous because

Limx→2 (x2 + 1) = 5, f(2) = 22 + 1 = 5

The function f(x) is said to have right-hand continuity at x = a. If f(a) exists and,
Limx→a f(x) = f(a)

f(x) is said to have left-handed continuity at x = a

Example: Examine f(x) = x1/2 at x = 0.

Here, f(0) = 0. But f(x) is not defined (we deal in real values only) for x < 0, so
Limx→o f(x) does not exist.

However, Limx→0 x1/2 = 0. Hence, since f(0) is also 0, f(x) = x 1/2 has right-hand
continuity at x = 0.
Continuity implies both right-hand and left-hand continuity.

3. Guided practice (We do it)

Let the class form into a group with 4 members, with the guidance of the teacher, do
the following:

Evaluate the limits and determine whether the function is continuous at a number
or not.

1. Limx→2 2x2 - 3 2.Limx→4 4x2 - 6

3.Limx→4 4 / (2x2 - 3) 4.Limx→2 (x+2)2 / (x2 - 4)2

5.Limx→2 2x2 / (7x2 - 4x)

4. Corrections and feedback

Reteach when necessary

5. Independent Practice (You do it)

The teacher will give a quiz
Evaluate the limits and determine whether the function is continuous at a number
or not.

1. Limx→2 1 / (23/x + 3) 2.Limx→4 43/x

3.Limx→4 4 / (2x2 - 3) 4.Limx→2 2 / (5 + 31/x)

5.Limx→2 3 / (7x- 4)
