Pre-Installation
The 8500 DDE is designed to mount to a wall with wooden studs on 16” centers, with adequate
support (see below). Alternately, it can be mounted to a normal masonry wall or on the optional
free-standing base plate.
NOTE: Verifying the wall support capability is the responsibility of the installer.
Location Considerations
• The device should have a minimum area of 92” (234 cm) high by 50
1/2” (128.4 cm) deep and 40” (102 cm) wide. Access for operator
and patient should be considered according to the plan below. The
device is mounted 6.5” (165 cm) from the wall, using the furnished
wall brackets. Wall bracket location and column base plate mounting
do not apply when the optional free standing base is used.
• The device is operated from the right side of the equipment. It is
recommended that a minimum of 34”(86 cm) from the center line of
the column is allowed on the right side of stand for operator access.
• Each wall bracket support bolt must withstand 120 lbs (54.4 kg) of
shear load and 400 lbs (181.4 kg) of withdrawal force. Bolts are
supplied with the device for mounting into wood studs. Fasteners for
mounting to other structures must be supplied by the installer. No
external support is necessary with optional free standing base. Floor
must be able to support a weight of approximately 250 lbs (113 kg)
wall mounted device or 375 lbs (170 kg) free standing Orthoralix
8500 DDE, plus patient and operator.

Safety Precautions
WARNING
The X-ray device may be dangerous to the patient and operator if you do not
observe and follow the safe exposure factors and operating instructions. Do
not operate this system unless you have received training to perform a
procedure.
WARNING
Do not remove covers or cables on system. High voltage is present in the
system. To avoid personal injury from electrical shock, do not operate the
system with any covers open or cables removed.
WARNING
Keep hands and other body parts clear of identified pinch points.
Observe all fire regulations. Fire extinguishers should be provided for both
electrical and non-electrical fires. All operators should be fully trained in the
use of fire extinguishers and other fire-fighting equipment and in local fire
procedures.
WARNING
In the event of an electrical fire, only use extinguishers that are labelled for
that purpose. Using water or other liquids on an electrical fire can lead to fatal
or other serious personal injury.
This equipment must only be used in rooms or areas that comply with all
applicable laws and recommendations concerning electrical safety in rooms
used for medical purposes, e.g. IEC, US National Electrical Code, or other local
standards concerning provisions of an additional protective earth (ground)
terminal for equipment potential connection.
WARNING
This equipment must always be electrically disconnected from the mains
electrical supply before cleaning or disinfecting. Avoid ordinary medical
equipment without protection against ingress of liquids. No water or any other
liquid should be allowed to leak inside the equipment, as they may cause a
short-circuit and corrosion.

Parameter Adjustments
Image quality is improved by using filters at the pre-processing stage prior to image delivery to
VixWin or other imaging software in the GxPicture suite. This step provides the necessary
adjustments to the contrast, brightness, and sharpness to the image. To obtain the best image
possible, it is recommended that a patient scan be completed and then use this image to adjust
the parameters.

f
b
g e
a. Equalize: adjusts image histogram and distributes image gray levels more
evenly.
b. Despeckle: eliminates “salt and pepper” in image (i.e. white and black dots).
c. Mirror: rotates image about its vertical axis (i.e. right and left sides are
switched).
d. Contrast and Brightness: adjusts the image contrast and brightness (8-bit
images only).
e. LL and UL: adjusts the percentage of the pixels displayed (16-bit images only).
Values of 1% for the Lower Level and 99% for the Upper Level are often good
choices.
f. Gamma: sets image brightness in the image viewer. The default value is 0.35
for STND PANORAMIC. Recommended values fall between 0.5 and 0.8. Adjust-
ments can be made to these values to obtain the desired image brightness. If
Gamma is set to 1.0, the image is displayed as received from the scanner
(DMU in 8500) and tends to be very bright. Using a lower value (e.g. 0.35)
darkens the image to the desired brightness for clinical diagnosis.
g. Optimizer: Provides additional image enhancements when the image is
loaded into an imaging software viewer.

Insert
Introduction
The GX 85-15 (800-0008) stationary anode X-ray tube (commonly referred to
as the “insert”) is designed to be a dental X-ray insert. The insert will operate
up to and including 85 kVp. The target material is tungsten set at a 5° angle
into a copper anode body. The cathode is a single focus biased design
providing nominal focal spots of 0.4 mm. The insert is intended for use in the
Orthoralix 8500.

NOTE: The single exposure maximum ratings are based on 15% heat storage in the anode.
The Image Phantom, part number 4519-124-20471, is required for the Centering Test.
1. With the system ON, press the Reset button.
4
2. Select the small adult panoramic mode.
3. Set to 60 kV.
1
4. Set to 6 mA.
To adjust the mA see
“Adjust mA Setting” on page 7-6.
3
Verify that line “a” is vertical +/- 3° in relation to horizontal line “d”.
Verify that line “d” is horizontal and flat within a band of .24” (6 mm).
Verify that the darkened area is centered in relation to the “a” central vertical line
with a tolerance of +/- .16” (+/- 4 mm).
Verify that the “a” central vertical line is well focused and that the adjacent balls
are round:
The image should measure 5.23” +/- .12” (133 mm +/- 3 mm) vertically. Refer
to prior steps for any required adjustment of the X-ray collimator.
This section provides a recommended annual maintenance guide to ensure optimal system
performance. Annual maintenance is not mandatory but should be recommended to the
customer by the local dealer or technician.
Maintenance List
1. Perform a Beam Alignment Test, 7-1.
2. Perform a Check Laser Positioning, 7-7.
3. Perform a Cover Installation, 7-9.
4. Perform a Centering Test, A-1 to ensure handle bars are aligned.
5. Lubricate rails in overhead and all gears requiring lubrication.
6. Check keypad buttons for functionality and wear.
7. Verify all bolts are tight that secures unit to wall (lag bolts, column bolts and wall
bracket).
8. Beam alignment and phantom test should be saved electronically. This is done by
pushing Prnt Scrn button on keyboard then pasting it to a Word document. Can be
printed later or stored electronically as proof.
9. Clean contacts on PA6 pcb and sensor with soft brush (toothbrush).
10. Recommended but not mandatory, use dosimeter to verify tube output KV, ma.
11. Remove covers and verify all connectors are securely seated on Logic and
Converter PCBs. Check that cables are not rubbing on any moving components.
CAUTION
If images are not satisfactory to the customer, these adjustments can refine
and improve image quality. Contacting Tech Support prior to initiating these
steps is recommended.
Median Filter
This filter is similar to the despeckle treatment in GxStart, which removes any
dark or bright spots seen in the image. These spots occur mainly due to the
poor sensor detector elements.
