Practical assignment 1
Aim : To determine the dip and strike of a rock.
Materials required : Rock, smartphone
Theory : Geologists must be able to state the orientations of many inclined flat surfaces in order to
decipher and map the geology of a given region. The orientation of any such surface can be defined by
two definite measurements- dip and strike.
The dip is both the direction of maximum slope down an inclined surface and the angle between the
maximum slope and a horizontal plane.
The strike is the direction of intersection of an inclined surface with any horizontal plane ( e.g.,
intersection of a bedding plane with a water surface)
Procedure :
I. Select a rock and record its geographic coordinates.
II. Mark the dip of the rock towards its slope and mark the strike perpendicular to the dip.
III. Place the compass along the direction of the strike drawn and note down the data.
IV. Place the compass along the dip and note the data.
V. Place the compass perpendicular to the strike direction and note down the reading for dip
direction.
Site details
Location : Near UMA, Paro
Latitude: 27⁰24’58’’N
Longitude: 89⁰25’35’’E
Elevation: 2350m
Observation :
Results:
1. Strike direction: 135⁰SE
2. Dip direction: 158⁰S
3. Dip angle: 53⁰
Conclusion
After the selection of the rock, the GPS coordinates of the site were recorded. (Latitude: 27⁰24’58’’N and
Longitude: 89⁰25’35’’E).
The strike and the dip direction were found to be 135⁰SE and 158⁰S respectively and has a dip angle of
53⁰.
