This document provides inter-rivet buckling curves for specific materials to determine the buckling stress between rivets under an applied edge stress. It includes: 1. Notations for the parameters used to define the buckling curves. 2. Details on how the buckling curves were generated for three aluminum alloys, including B.S. L150, using the material properties and a fixity coefficient of 3 for snaphead riveting. 3. An example problem that uses the B.S. L150 curve to determine the rivet pitch at which a 1.2mm thick sheet made of that material would buckle under an edge stress of 330MN/m2 (the answer

2. NOTES

The method of drawing curves of the inter-rivet buckling stress f e against l/t for specific materials, using
Item No. Struct 02.01.08 is illustrated. Auxiliary scales allow f e to be read directly against l for standard
sheet gauges.

The assumptions and conditions under which the curves are valid are given in Item No. Struct 02.01.08.

The example curves have been drawn for a fixity coefficient at the rivet, K = 3 (which is appropriate to
snaphead riveting), for three commonly used aluminium alloys. The curve for B.S. L150, for example, was
drawn as follows.

From Item No. 76016, the relevant properties of B.S. L150 (previously B.S. 2L71) material are
E = 72 400 MN/m2, m = 16 and f n = 339 MN/m2, so that

fn 1 / 2 339 1/2
 -------
- =  ------------------------------ = 0.0395 .
 KE  3 × 72 400 

Then for l/t = 10 , following the arrowed line on Item No Struct. 02.01.08, f e /f n = 1.10 , and
fe = 1.10 × 339 = 373 MN/m2. The curve is completed by a repetition of this process for other values
of l/t .

The curve has been terminated at the 0.5 per cent proof stress in compression because, as explained in Item
No. 76016, the value of m is calculated to apply only up to this stress.

3. EXAMPLE

To find the pitch of snaphead rivets at which a 1.2 mm thick B.S. L150 sheet buckles under an edge stress
of 330 MN/m2.

From Figure 1, at f e = 330 MN/m2 and t = 1.2 mm, following the arrowed line, l = 21.3 mm.
