SampleTron 2

Chapter 1 – SampleTron 2 Overview

1.1 – Introduction
SampleTron 2 is a virtual instrument that provides the full experience of playing a tape-based and vintage digital
sampler collection through an audiophile chain of studio-quality effects. There are three tabs at the top of the
SampleTron 2 interface that take you through the complete signal flow of the instrument. Use these tabs to
quickly and easily craft your sound with familiar controls.

1.2 – TRON Tab

This is the main view of SampleTron 2 where you can see the currently loaded Tron Model and its three separate
Tracks: A, B and C. The Model changes based on the Track that is loaded into the Track A position. On the
original Chamberlin and Mellotron® hardware instruments, multitrack tape was used to put one timbre on each
track. The most famous Mellotron, the M400, used 3/8” tape with three available tracks. So for example, a
typical Mellotron M400 tape would have flutes on track A, a string section on track B and a solo cello on track
C. We recreate that paradigm here in SampleTron 2 with three available Tracks per Preset.

11 1 - Overview
SampleTron 2

Note that we capitalize “Tracks” in this manual when referring to SampleTron 2 specifically since a SampleTron
2 Track is an object that you can select, load and edit independently of the Preset. A SampleTron 2 Preset
contains all three Tracks and their settings along with the Effects Rack settings.

On the original hardware units, you could set the mechanical track selector switch halfway between the A and
B or between the B and C to play two tracks at once. In SampleTron 2, you can simply click the MIX button and
play all three Tracks at once. No need to jury-rig the switch halfway between tracks!

To change any of the Tracks, click on the Track name on the Tracks Panel at the lower left of the window to
open the Track Browser.

You can also load your own user samples into any of the Tracks using the Tape Effects Panel. Make sure the Lid
is open so that you can see the Tape Effects Panel, then simply drag-and-drop your sample or folder of samples
onto the Drop Sample field, which will open the Sample Import window. Alternatively, you can click the LOAD
button in the Tape Effects Panel and navigate to your single sample or folder of samples.

12 1 - Overview
SampleTron 2

1.3 – EDIT Tab

The Edit Tab is where you can change Tracks for each of the A, B and C Track Positions and also set the
volume, pan, fine tune, transpose, note and velocity range for each Track. There is also a panel of synthesizer-
style controls for the Filter and Amplitude Envelope that can be applied to individual Tracks or to all three Tracks
together.

13 1 - Overview
SampleTron 2

1.3.1 – Track Browser

Click any Track name in the aluminum panel to open the Track Browser. The Track Browser lets you browse
through all of the 400+ available Tracks and view icons and descriptions for each. You can sort by Model and by
Category to more quickly find you’re looking for. Double-click a Track name in the right column to load that Track
into the selected Track Position.

14 1 - Overview
SampleTron 2

1.4 – EFFECTS Tab

Click the Effects Tab to open the 4-slot effects rack, which contains the Channel Strip for EQ and compression,
the Tape Echo for vintage stereo tape delay, the Multimod where you can select between six different classic
modulation effects like chorus and phaser, and the Vintage Plate reverb for spatial effects. Individual Effects can
be bypassed. The Effects are global for all three loaded Tracks and the settings are saved with the Preset.

15 1 - Overview
SampleTron 2

1.5 – Master Volume

The Master Volume slider is at the top right. Click the speaker icon to expand it and change the level.

1.6 – Panic Button

Click the exclamation point icon at the top right to send an all-notes-off message to silence any stuck notes

1.7 – Settings

Click the gear icon at the top right to open the Settings Panel where you can select and set your audio and MIDI
interface (standalone only) and your disk path for where the sound content is stored. You can also choose your
hard disk streaming settings as well as register the product here.

1.7.1 – Sound Content

Click the Sound Content Tab in the top bar of the Settings Panel to set the disk path where your sound content
is located. This should be a separate path from SampleTank 4 and other virtual instruments. The path you select
must include the installed SampleTron 2 folders for Instruments, Library Info, Library Resources and Samples.
The installer will configure this folder correctly. However, if you decide to move your sound content to a different
location, it is critical to keep the file structure within the selected disk path intact in order for SampleTron 2 to
function correctly.

1.7.2 – Authorization
Authorize the software by clicking the lock icon in the top bar of the Settings Panel. This will open the IK Product
Manager where you can enter your serial number to authorize the product. SampleTron 2 has a 10-day demo
period during which time the instrument is fully functional. After the demo period has expired, a periodic noise
burst will emit from the instrument until it is authorized.

16 1 - Overview
SampleTron 2

1.8 – MIDI Learn

A MIDI Learn function is available for nearly all the controls in SampleTron 2. This allows you to assign an
external MIDI controller to a SampleTron 2 knob, button or slider. To do this, right-click the SampleTron 2
parameter and choose MIDI Learn. Then move the control on your external controller, and it will automatically be
linked to the corresponding SampleTank knob, button or slider.

1.8.1 – MIDI Assignments

MIDI controller assignments are stored globally, and once set, they will be available in all instances of the plug-in
and standalone application. You can view all of the controller assignments by right-clicking on any SampleTron
2 control and then selecting MIDI Assignments. The MIDI Assignments window lets you edit or delete individual
assignments or clear all controller assignments. You can also choose whether a specific assignment will Latch.
This is particularly useful when using momentary controllers like the sustain pedal or pitch wheel to turn effects
on and off.

17 1 - Overview
SampleTron 2

Chapter 2 – Getting started with SampleTron 2

SampleTron 2 can be used as a standalone application, as a plug-in, or as a library in SampleTank 4.

2.1 – Using SampleTron 2 as a standalone application

Launch SampleTron 2 from your applications folder to use it without a host application such as a digital audio
workstation (DAW). This allows SampleTron 2 to have all the functionality and flexibility of the plug-in while in a
self-contained software instrument.

When launching SampleTron 2 standalone for the first time, you need to set the audio output and MIDI input.
This is accomplished in the Settings window that can be opened by clicking the gear icon at the top right.
Configure the Audio / MIDI fields to use with your studio or live setup.

2.1.1 – Audio / MIDI

Click the Audio / MIDI Tab to

set up your audio output and
MIDI input. SampleTron 2 is
compatible with any ASIO or
Direct Audio audio interface in
Windows and any Core Audio-
compatible audio interface in
macOS

Output device

interface you want to use with
SampleTron 2.

Left channel / Right channel

Set which output from
your chosen output device
SampleTron 2 will use for its left
and right output.

18 2 - Getting started

SampleTron 2

Sample Rate and Buffer Size

The sample rate and buffer size drop-down menus let you choose your settings for SampleTron 2. These
settings are dependent on the audio interface as not all audio interfaces provide the same sample rate or buffer
setting options. For the best performance in SampleTron 2 standalone, set the buffer as low as possible without
hearing clicks and pops. This will provide the lowest amount of latency, the delay between playing a note and
hearing the sound. Higher sample rates such as 96kHz will deliver better sound quality, but at the expense of a
higher CPU load.

MIDI Input
This drop-down menu determines which MIDI input of your computer SampleTron 2 will respond to. Any MIDI
interface supported by the computer’s operating system will work with SampleTron 2.

2.1.2 – Info
Click the Info Tab at the top right to find the specific software version number of SampleTron 2 along with
additional information about the product.

2.1.3 – Registration Lock

Click the lock to launch the IK Product Manager where you can enter your serial number to authorize or
de-authorize SampleTron 2.

2.2 – Computer keyboard keys

In standalone mode, you can use your computer keyboard to play MIDI notes to trigger the Instruments in
SampleTron 2.

2.3 – Using SampleTron 2 as a plug-in

In addition to a standalone application, SampleTron 2 also works as an Audio Units, AAX or VST plug-in
instrument in major host applications such as Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase, Digital Performer and others.

Consult your host application’s user guide for specific instructions on how to use virtual instruments.

2.4 – Presets
SampleTron 2 has Presets that are loaded from the drop-down menu at the center top of all windows. A
SampleTron 2 Preset includes all of the settings on the Tron, Edit and Effects Tabs.

19 2 - Getting started

SampleTron 2

2.4.1 – Loading Presets

Click the preset name to view the list, and scroll up or down to browse all the available presets. To load a preset,
simply click a preset name in the list. In the standalone version, you can also use the up/down arrow keys on
your computer keyboard to move up and down through the list of Presets when the list is open, and then press
Enter to load the selected preset.

2.4.2 – Managing Presets

Click the Preset Manager icon to the right of the preset name to view the Preset Manager. Here you can Save,
Save As…, Rename or Delete Presets. You can also choose “Empty” to clear the current Preset and return
SampleTron 2 to its default state for creating new Presets from scratch.

20 2 - Getting started

SampleTron 2

Chapter 3 – The TRON Tab

The Tron Tab is the main view of SampleTron 2 where the currently selected Model is displayed. The displayed
Model is determined by the Track loaded into Track Position A. This is because SampleTron 2 allows you to mix-
and-match between different Models for the three Track Positions.

On the tape-based Models (Chamberlin, Mellotrons and Novatron), there is a Lid control that opens and closes
the lid to reveal the keys and spinning flywheel inside. This also reveals the Tape Effects Panel where you can
adjust the analog tape modeling for each Track independently.

There are two sets of controls on the Tron Tab: the Tracks Panel and the Tape Effects Panel.

21 3 - The TRON Tab

SampleTron 2

3.1 – Tracks Panel

The Tracks Panel displays the name of the Tracks loaded into Track Positions A, B and C. Click this area to open
the Track Browser and change the Track loaded into each Track Position. The Tracks Panel also includes a MIX
button that, when active, lets you play all three Tracks together. You can edit each Track’s settings on the Edit
Tab to customize splits and layers. When the MIX button is not lit, the Track Selector Switch simply chooses
which of the three Tracks to play alone.

The bottom row of the Tracks Panel contains Attack, Release and Tone knobs. The Attack and Release knobs
set the envelope shape for all three of the Tracks in the loaded Preset (you can adjust the envelope for each
Track independently on the Edit Tab if you prefer). The Tone knob similarly changes the EQ of all three Tracks.
This is a tone control on the master output before the Effects section. At the 12:00 center position, no EQ is
applied. Turning the knob clockwise boosts high frequencies, and turning the knob counterclockwise boosts low
frequencies.

All parameters on the Tracks Panel are saved with the Preset.

22 3 - The TRON Tab

SampleTron 2

3.2 – Tape Effects Panel

The Tape Effects Panel gives you control over the analog tape modeling in SampleTron 2. This is also where
you load user samples to take advantage of the tape modeling. As mentioned above, please make sure the Lid
control is open on the tape-based Models in order to access the Tape Effects.

3.2.1 – Tape Effects Selector

The Tape Effects apply to individual Tracks and not to the

global mix. Select which Track you want to edit using the
Tape Effects Selector, the A, B and C buttons at the top
of the Tape Effects Panel. Only the selected Track will be
affected by changes made on the panel.

23 3 - The TRON Tab

SampleTron 2

3.2.2 – Tape Effects Enable

Flip the toggle switch to the up position to enable the Tape Effects. When the switch is in the down position, the
Tape Effects are disabled for the selected Track.

3.2.3 – Tape Effects Default State

Note that the Tape Effects are disabled by default on all Tracks that were recorded from a tape-based source
(Chamberlin, Mellotrons, Novatron) since those samples already include the tape quality as part of their
recordings from the original hardware. If you want to add more tape processing to those Tracks in a Preset, then
enable the Tape Effects and set the controls as you prefer. Conversely, the Tape Effects are enabled by default
for all of the Modern tracks since those instruments were not sampled from a tape-based instrument, but are
instead original samples of acoustic and electric instruments.

The Tape Effects include six separate controls for Erosion, Noise, Wow, Bias, Tape Snaps and Flutter. When a
control is at zero, then that particular element of the tape effect is not applied. For example, you may wish to
just add wow and flutter to your Track, but not change the tone or quality of the Track. Similarly, you may wish
to leave the pitch of your Track untouched, but add some tonal color with the Erosion, Noise and Bias controls.
With these six separate controls, the SampleTron 2 Tape Effects Panel lets you dial in the tape processing with
extreme precision.

3.2.4 – Load Sample

You can load user samples into the selected SampleTron 2 Track by drag-and-drop in this section of the
Tape Effects Panel. Simply drag-and-drop a single sample or folder of samples into the Drop Sample field.
Alternatively, you may also click the LOAD button and navigate to your single sample or folder of samples.
Samples must be either AIFF or WAV format, 16- or 24-bit, and at a sample rate of 22050, 24000, 32000, 44100,
48000, 88200 or 96000 samples per second. Using the drag-and-drop sample or clicking the LOAD button
opens the Import Samples window.

24 3 - The TRON Tab

SampleTron 2

3.2.5 – Import Samples

Select the disk path where your sample or

samples are located. If you open this window
via drag-and-drop, this field will auto-populate
with the location of the file or folder you dragged.
Enter the name of Track you wish to create
using these samples. This is the Track name that
will appear in the SampleTron 2 Track Browser
and in the Tracks Panel in the A, B or C Track
Positions after you have saved the Track using
the SAVE button on the Tape Effects Panel. If you
are importing a folder of samples, this name will
represent the collection of all the samples in that
folder. Once you have named the Track, click the
Import button and SampleTron 2 will create a new
Track with the name you have entered.

3.2.6 – Map Samples by File Name

The default method for importing samples into SampleTron 2 is to use the file name to determine the root note
for each sample. In order for SampleTron 2 to read the root note, the sample’s file name must begin with the root
note and then be followed by a space and then any identifying text. For example, “G#2 Vibes Felt Mallet.wav.”

3.2.7 – Add a Velocity Tag

If you wish to load samples with multiple velocities, you can use the standard SampleTank 4 convention where
the note name is followed by an underscore and then a “v” followed by the high velocity value followed by a
space and then any identifying text. For example, “G#2_v110 Vibes Felt Mallet.wav.”

3.2.8 – Add a Round Robin Tag

If you wish to load samples that have multiple round robins (alternating takes of the same note), you can use the
standard SampleTank 4 convention where the note name is followed by an underscore and then an “rr” followed
by the round robin number followed by a space and then any identifying text. For example, “G#2_rr3 Vibes Felt
Mallet.wav.” You may include both a velocity tag and a round robin tag by separating the tags with underscores.
For example, “G#2_v110_rr3 Vibes Felt Mallet.wav.”

This is the same method used by SampleTank 4 and the free SampleTank Editor app. However please note
that instruments created in the SampleTank Editor will only play in SampleTank 4 and will not appear or load in
SampleTron 2.

3.2.9 – Chromatic From

There is an alternate method for setting the root note of your imported sample or folder of samples. You can
select the “Chromatic From” option in the Import Samples window, and then you can specify the starting
root note of the samples you wish to import. SampleTron 2 will then map the first sample in the folder to this
specified note and the subsequent notes one note higher going up the keyboard chromatically. And of course, if
you are just importing a single sample, then this option simply sets the root note of that single sample.

3.2.10 – Save Track

After you have imported your sample or folder of samples, you can play the newly-created Track in SampleTron
and even edit the Track on the Edit Tab. However, the Track will not be saved with the Preset unless you click
the SAVE button on the Tape Effects Panel. This writes the imported samples to the SampleTron 2 disk path that
you assigned in the Settings/Sound Content field so that they can be recalled again just like the factory Tracks.

You may ask why this step is necessary. Why isn’t the new Track simply “saved” when it is imported? We
provided this extra step for housekeeping reasons: You may want to audition several different samples or folders
of samples to hear how they sound in SampleTron 2. Or just use SampleTron 2 as an effects processor in a
quick DAW session. But you may not want to keep all of your auditioned samples. If we automatically saved
everything you imported, then all of your auditioned Tracks would remain in your SampleTron 2 disk path and
would have to be manually deleted. This can be a tedious process and also dangerous since there is a risk of
accidentally deleting factory content this way. Hence, we created the SAVE button to let you deliberately decide
when to save your imported samples and when to abandon them.

Chapter 4 – The EDIT Tab

The Edit Tab is where you manage and edit the A, B and C Tracks. Click on a Track name to open the Track
Browser. When the Track Browser is closed, here you can also set the volume, pan, fine tune, transpose,
note and velocity range for each Track as well as change the color and speed of each Track using a panel of
synthesizer-style controls for the Filter and Amplitude Envelope. The Synthesizer Controls can be applied to
individual Tracks or to all three Tracks together.

4.1.1 – Track Browser

Click the name of a Track in A, B or C to open the Track Browser. Here you can load a new Track into the
selected Track Position from the factory content or from your saved user Tracks created using the Import
Sample window and saved in the Tape Effects Panel. Users of other IK virtual instruments such as SampleTank
4 and Syntronik will find the familiar browser where you can sort the available Tracks by Model and / or by
Instrument Category. Like SampleTank 4 and Syntronik, you can read info and view the icon for each Track by
single-clicking on the Track names in the right column. SampleTron 2 includes over 400 Tracks to choose from,
so the Model and Category filtering can be extremely useful when looking for specific sounds to load. Click a
Model or Category name to apply those filters to the list of Tracks in the right column. You can select multiple
Models and Categories if you prefer.

4.1.2 – Load a Track

To load a Track into the currently selected Track Position (A, B or C), double-click the Track name in the right
column. In the standalone version, as with the Preset selection, you can also browse the list of Tracks once you
have clicked in the Track name column by using the up / down arrows on your keyboard and then press Enter to
load the Track.

SampleTron 2

4.1.2 – Close the Track Browser

Click the X at the upper right of the Track Browser to close it and return to the Edit Panel.

4.1.3 – Track Controls

The left rack of the Edit Panel contains controls for each of the three Tracks: A, B and C. This gives you
independent control over the Volume, Pan, Fine Tune, Transpose and Note Range of each Track so that you can
easily create custom splits and layers.

Important: If you are creating a split or layer, make sure that the MIX button is turned on in the Track Panel. If the
MIX button is turned off, then only the selected Track will play.

4.1.4 – Synthesizer Controls

The right rack of the Edit Panel contains the synthesizer-style controls for the Preset including a multimode filter
and 5-stage amplitude (volume) envelope. These parameters are applied to all three Tracks together by default
using the LINK button, but you may apply them to individual Tracks by selecting A, B or C instead of LINK with
the buttons at the bottom row of the rack. When LINK is off and A, B or C is selected, then the Synthesizer
Controls only affect the selected Track.

4.1.5 – Synthesizer Envelope Controls vs. Tracks Panel Attack and Release Knobs
The Attack and Release knobs on the Tracks Panel are always global. Therefore, even if you have LINK off and
A, B or C selected in the Synthesizer Controls rack, moving the Attack or Release knob in the aluminum Tracks
Panel will cause all three Tracks to jump to the position of that knob. So if you want to set different envelope
values for the three Tracks, you must avoid the global Attack and Release knobs in the aluminum Tracks Panel.

4.1.6 – Filter

SampleTron 2 has a multimode filter that you can use to color your Tracks. The Keytrack control changes the
filter cutoff frequency based on the note played. When Keytrack is on, the filter cutoff frequency doubles with
every octave like a typical analog synthesizer filter. When Keytrack is off, the cutoff frequency remains static like
the filters on a recording console. The Mode switch selects between high pass (cuts lows) or low pass (cuts
highs) and the slope of the filter, either 6, 12 or 24dB per octave. Recording console filters are generally 6dB
per octave with a gentle rolloff, and synthesizer filters are generally 12 or 24dB per octave for a steeper and
more dramatic rolloff beyond the cutoff frequency. The Drive control sets the amount of saturation in the Filter to
accurately recreate the filter sounds of vintage analog synths.

4.1.7 – Amplitude Envelope

This section provides a 5-stage envelope to change the volume of sound. The envelope moves through each
stage from left to right. Note the information in paragraph 4.1.5 about the relationship between the envelope
knobs in the Synthesizer Controls, and their relationship to the Attack and Release knobs in the aluminum
Tracks Panel.

4.1.8 – Velocity Sensitivity

Like the original hardware instruments, SampleTron 2 Tracks are not velocity-sensitive by default. However, you
can engage the VELOCITY button to apply a 30dB velocity range to the selected Track or collectively linked
Tracks.

Chapter 5 – The EFFECTS Tab

SampleTron 2 has a 4-slot effects rack to process the mix of the three Tracks. Think of this as a serial effects
rack at the output of the sampler. The effects and their signal flow are fixed and cannot be changed; however
each effect has numerous parameters and can be individually bypassed. The Effects settings are saved with the
Preset.

SampleTron 2

5.1 – Channel Strip

The Channel Strip was originally created for the Syntronik virtual synthesizer to be a complete mastering EQ and
compression solution in a single effect. The “Sub” and “Air” controls are based on the legendary Pultec® EQP-
1A program equalizer for broad tonal shaping of the highs and lows, while the low, mid and high EQ controls act
as more typical recording console bands. The compressor is based on a VCA compression circuit and provides
transparent gain reduction to tame unruly sources.

5.2 – Tape Echo

Based on the Maestro® Echoplex EP-3, this effect models the characteristics of the most famous tape delays
and is provided here in stereo with independent settings for left and right (labeled A and B on the panel).
Additional functionality includes the ability to color just the delay or the entire signal using the Filter switch
as well as output gain control to compensate for low effect levels when the input is turned down to avoid
overdriving the effect too much.

SampleTron 2

5.3 – Multimod

Multimod is a collection of six different classic modulation effects, each with their own set of dedicated
parameters that appear in the displays above the knobs depending on the algorithm selected. The algorithms
include Chorus, Phaser, Flanger, Uni-V, Ensemble and Rotary.

5.4 – Vintage Plate

This is a new effect created for AmpliTube 5 that is based on classic physical plate reverbs like the famous
EMT® 140. However this Vintage Plate goes well beyond the original hardware designs with a decay range of
up to 30 seconds and a modulation generator that introduces a lush swirl into the reverb more similar to famous
algorithmic hardware reverbs. A high-pass filter cuts low frequencies at the input, and a low-pass filter cuts high
frequencies at the output for exceptional spectral control.
