Filipino Values: Mañana Habit & Crab Mentality

Filipino values refer to the shared cultural beliefs that guide how Filipinos interact with each other. These values were developed over centuries and serve as a lens for how Filipinos view issues. Examples of values include "Mañana Habit," which is a tendency to postpone tasks, and "Crab Mentality," which is a negative reaction to others' success through envy or selfishness. Both values can have negative effects on mental health such as low self-esteem, anxiety, and fear of failure.

Filipino Values serve as Filipino’s lenses on how they

appreciate the issues around them. To appreciate
Filipino culture, begin with their values.
Mañana Habit also known as Manyana Habit is a

type of negative behavior of some Filipinos that
causes them to postpone the tasks at hand for an
indefinite time in the future.
“Mañana” is a Spanish word that means
M t
“Tomorrow” or “Future” in English. “Habit” means
the behavior patterns of doing things, often
subconsciously. So, when we combine the two
words to form the phrase “Mañana Habit,” we can
define it as the behavior pattern of doing things
tomorrow or in the future.

What is Crab Mentality?
Crab mentality is a phenomenon where people react
negatively, in terms of their thoughts, statements, or actions,
to those who get ahead of them, even though they don’t
expect there to be direct benefits to doing so.

Crab mentality, or “utak talangka or talakang pag-iisip” in

Tagalog, is a pattern of thinking where a person is “often
envious and selfish about a person's success” (Aydin and
Oğuzhan, 2019).
The motto associated with this mentality is:

“If I can’t have it,

neither can you”.
Signs of Crab Mentality:
Immediately offering unwanted criticism/negative
comments after someone is successful
Inability to offer praise or congratulations in response to
someone else’s success
Lack of compassion when others are struggling
Feeling threatened when others are growing and
achieving their goals
Gossiping about someone’s mistakes or failures to others
Feelings of envy or hostility, wishing ill will on others
Effects of CRAB MENTALITY:
There are many impacts that the crab mentality has on our mental
health:

feelings of unworthiness
overworking and overproducing
low self-esteem and confidence
disturbances to emotions
anxiety
fear of failure.
