1.2. Grading Method.
To grade this comparison with an objective view we are going to set a grading system.
This grading system is going to prioritize the main important aspect of our searching with a
score table. In addition, we will try to quantify how much better is one in comparison with the
other one. In this way, at the conclusion we are going to multiply the quantity and the priority
table in each parameter, and we will try to select the best option comparing the score
obtained.
Quantity table Priority table

4. Comparison.
4.1 Engine comparison.
4.1.1 Kind of engine.
Both engines use the same type of engine, 4-cylinder in line. The main difference between
them is that Kia engine with displacement 1.6 litres (1582 cm3 ) and Peugeot engine
displacement 1.5 litres (1499 cm3 ). Therefore, we are going to consider that them have the
same score in this parameter.
The main advantages of this kind of engine are:
-Lightweight and compact design: 4-cylinder in-line engines have a smaller size and weight
compared to other engine configurations, making them ideal for small and medium-sized
vehicles.
-Fuel efficiency: A 4-cylinder engine generally consumes less fuel than larger engines, making it
more fuel-efficient and eco-friendlier.
-Lower cost: The simpler design and smaller size make them less expensive to produce and
maintain compared to other engine configurations.
-Smooth operation: An in-line engine has a balanced configuration, which reduces vibration
and enhances smooth operation.
-Improved performance: With advances in technology, modern 4-cylinder engines have been
optimized for improved power, torque, and fuel efficiency.
4.1.2 Type of timing gear.
In this case, our cars have different types of timing gears. Peugeot has a timing belt; however,
Kia uses timing chains. Timing chains are generally considered to be more durable and require
less maintenance than timing belts. Typically, is not necessary to replace it during the life of
the engine, while timing belts need to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 kms.
Nevertheless, timing chains are more complex and heavier than timing belts and can be more
expensive to repair if they fail, in addition it can produce some vibrations and sound in the
engine.
Timing belts, on the other hand, are lighter, easier to install, and operate quietly, but they may
need to be replaced more frequently and can break if not properly maintained.
From my point of view, timing belts nowadays are more useful than chain belts. The new
timing belts are made with better materials and can be used during more time, so it is the
most efficient type of timing gear.
So, in this topic we consider that Peugeot is “better” than Kia.
4.1.3 Fuel supply system.
Both engines have the same type of fuel supply system, only change their denomination “HDi”
for Peugeot and “CRDi” for Kia, but they use the same method “Common rail fuel injection”.
This method is one of the most efficient, we can find a lot of advantages:
-Fuel Efficiency: These engines offer improved fuel efficiency due to the precise control of fuel
injection and combustion.
-Power and Torque: It produces more power and torque than conventional diesel engines,
which results in improved acceleration and overall performance.
-Reduced Emissions: This technology helps in reducing emissions compared to traditional
diesel engines, as the precise control of fuel injection and combustion leads to more complete
combustion and less unburned fuel.
Also this system has a few of disadvantages:
-Cost: These engines are generally more expensive than traditional diesel engines due to the
added technology and complexity.
-Maintenance: Common rail fuel injection require more maintenance, as they have more
components and electronic controls that need to be serviced.
-Complexity: This system is more complex than traditional diesel engine, which can result in
higher repair costs and longer repair times if something goes wrong.
-Limited Availability: It is not widely available in many countries, which can limit the options
for customers who want to purchase a vehicle with this type of engine.
In addition, related with this topic, we can talk about the fuel comsumption of these cars.
In one hand, we can find Kia Ceed 1.6 CRDi with these results:
In an urban situation 4.1 l/100 km, in highway 3.5 l/100 km and in a combined situation
3.7 l/100km.
In the other hand, Peugeot 308 Hdi has these consumes:
In an urban situation 4.4 l/100 km, in highway 3.3 l/100 km and in a combined situation
3.7 l/100km.
The difference between them is really small but we suppose that the person who is going to
drive this car, will use it mostly in a urban situation. For this reason, we consider that Kia is a
“little better” in this point.
4.1.4 Turbocharger.
In this topic we can find a big difference between our cars, they have different types of
turbocharger.
First, Kia uses an electrically driven charger. The turbocharger uses a small electric motor to
spin the turbine, which compresses the incoming air and increases the engine's power output.
This allows the engine to produce more power from a smaller displacement, which helps to
reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The turbocharger also helps to reduce turbo lag,
which is the delay in power delivery that can occur when the engine is transitioning from low
to high RPMs. By using an electrically driven turbocharger, the 1.6 CRDi engine can deliver
quick and responsive power delivery, even at low RPMs.
However, Peugeot uses a variable geometry turbocharger. This is a type of turbocharger that
allows for adjustable airflow to the engine, which helps to improve the engine's performance
and efficiency. This type of turbocharger is often used in modern diesel engines to provide a
balance between low-end torque and high-end power.
From my point of view, both are similar and are complex systems of charge, but we can
consider that electrically driven charger can be more efficient. So, in this parameter Kia is a
“little better” than Peugeot.
4.1.5 External charasteristic.
In this point, we are going to compare some external charasteristic like torque, power,
maximum speed and aceleration.
External charasteristic Kia Peugeot
Power (HP) 135 130
Torque (N·m) 320 300
Maximum speed (km/h) 197 204
0-100 km/h (s) 11,5 10,8
After compare these results, we find that Kia is “little better” in this charasteristics. The most
important difference is the torque, that also affect on the aceleration of the vehicle.
4.1.6 Exhaust.
Both cars have the same treatment of exhaust gases, both use a selective catalytic reduction.
This one is AdBlue, that helps to get a reduction of Nox emissions, converting it into nitrogen
and water. In addition, these cars fullfill all the goverments regulations related to the global
warning.
However, we can compare their CO2 emissions. Peugeot has 98 grames per kilometer and Kia
97 grames per kilometer. So, we are going to consider it like the same value.
4.2 Other aspects.
4.2.1 Aerodynamic.
One of the crucial factors of a vehicle is his aerodynamic coefficient. This parameter will affect
to the fuel consumption and the behavior of the car when we are driving.
In our case, we found that the aerodynamic coefficient of Kia and Peugeot is almost the same,
around 0,28.
4.2.2 Dimensions and weight.
Dimensions actually will affect to the smooth of the driving, also the weight is one of the most
import characteristic in the driving of the vehicle.
First, Peugeot has a length of 4,25 meters, a width of 1,80 meters, a height of 1,47 meters and
it has an empty weight of 1180 kilogrames.
Sencondly, Kia has a length of 4,31 meters, a width of 1,78 meters, a height of 1,47 meters and
it has an empty weight of 1289 kilogrames.
There are around a hundred of kilograms between them, however this little differnece is
important. For this reason., we are going to consider that Peugeot 308 is a “little better” than
Kia Ceed.
4.2.3 Trunk capacity.
When we buy a car, we not only have to check the mechanical parameters, also we must
compare some other aspects to know if it a is successful car.
In this case, we are going to compare the trunk capacity. Peugeot has a capacity of 470 liters,
however Kia only has a capacity of 380 liters.
In this point, Peugeot it is “considerably better” than Kia.
5. Conclusion.
Using the grading method that we explain at the start of the report, we are going to multiply
each value and we are going to obtain a final score:
Priority Kia Total score
Kind of engine 1,25 1 1,25
Type of timing gear 1,5 1 1,5
Fuel supply system 2 1,25 2,5

Aerodynamics 1,5 1 1,5
Dimensions and weight 1,5 1,25 1,875
Trunk capacity 1,25 2 2,5
14,125
In conclusion, as we can see in this tables, Peugeot wins with 1,2 points of difference.
These results are close because we compared two vehicles with really similar parameters, so I
consider that this analysis is useful to help someone to choose the correct one.
