(WORKSHEET) General Biology 1 2nd Quarter Activity 2 - Lipids

1. Lipids contain carbon and hydrogen and may contain oxygen and other elements. They can be distinguished from carbohydrates by their molecular formula. 2. The four major types of lipids are triglycerides, phospholipids, steroids, and waxes. Triglycerides and phospholipids both store energy but phospholipids also form biological membranes while steroids are used as hormones and signaling molecules. 3. Saturated fatty acids contain only single bonds between carbons while unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more double bonds. Triglycerides and phospholipids both contain fatty acids and glycerol, but phospholipids also contain a charged phosphate group making them polar.
