LESSON 1: LIMIT OF A FUNCTION USING

TABLE OF VALUES
INTUITIVE IDEA OF LIMIT
We start by considering the function defined by
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟑
𝒇 𝒙 =
𝒙−𝟑

𝑥 approaches 3 from the left 𝑥 approaches 3 from the right

(𝒙 < 𝟑) (𝒙 > 𝟑)

𝒙 2.9 2.99 2.999 3 3.001 3.01 3.1

𝒇(𝒙) 1.9 1.99 1.999 undefined 2.001 2.01 2.1

The table of values indicates that if 𝑥 tends closer and closer to 3, the value
of 𝑓 𝑥 approaches 2.
definition of limit
Definition: Let 𝑓 be a function defined in an open interval containing 𝑎
except possibly at 𝑎. We say the 𝑓(𝑥) has a limit 𝑳 as 𝑥 approaches 𝑎 if the
value of 𝑓(𝑥) can be made arbitrarily close to 𝐿 by taking the value of 𝑥 near
𝑎 but not equal to 𝑎. We can express this by writing
Function

𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝑳
𝒙→𝒂

As you approach 𝑎 The value of the function is

along the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠. getting closer to.

We read this as “the limit of 𝑓(𝑥) is equal to 𝐿 as 𝑥 approaches to 𝑎”.

Referring to the example in the beginning,

𝒇(𝒙) 𝒙→𝒂 𝑳
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟑 We approach 3 along
𝒇 𝒙 = 2
𝒙−𝟑 the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠.

𝒙𝟐 −𝟒𝒙+𝟑
𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝑳 ⟹ 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒙−𝟑
=𝟐
𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝟑

Limit of a function is the value that a function "approaches" as the

input "approaches" some value.

The direction may be specified in the limit notation by adding certain symbols.

❖ If 𝑥 approaches 𝑎 from the left, then we write 𝐥𝐢𝐦− 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝑳.

𝒙→𝒂
❖ If 𝑥 approaches 𝑎 from the right, then we write 𝐥𝐢𝐦+ 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝑳.
𝒙→𝒂

These limits, 𝐥𝐢𝐦− 𝒇 𝒙 and 𝐥𝐢𝐦+ 𝒇 𝒙 , are also referred as one-sided limits.

if and only if
