Harper's Bazaar: Following Thailand-Singapore <Bazaar>, you met with <Bazaar>
Korea, wearing Miu Miu wandering the streets of Seoul at night.
Minnie: How can it be the first time with <Bazaar> Korea! I was surprised, too. I think
<Bazaar> has its own vibe no matter where you shoot it. And the pictures always came
out well.(laughs) It's gotten a lot colder, but I felt good walking down the night wearing
warm and pretty clothes. I didn't have that many chances to do outdoor photoshoots, so
it felt different. When I was shooting on the rooftop, I was lucky to shoot with beautiful
fireworks in the background because there was a fireworks festival. I'm really looking
AN
forward to the pictorial.
Harper's Bazaar: I think it suits Minnie both the relaxedness of day and the
mysteriousness of night. What kind of time do you enjoy more?
_C
Minnie: I'm totally a night owl. I think I can concentrate better in the evening when I
work or work on music. But it changed a little while ago after our European tour. I had
no choice but to move early to look around the city before my schedule. The view during
the day is different and it's so nice to have a lot of time. I'm gradually getting to know the
SA
charms of the day.
Harper's Bazaar: You released your first US EP <HEAT>. You've completed another
challenge.
_U
Minnie: Actually, we've been preparing for quite some time. I feel relieved and have a
lot of expectations. I'm curious about how foreign Neverlands will react
when they hear our English songs. I like trying new things. "If I'm not an idol, when
LE
would I try something new like this? Let's have fun" with this mindset. This time, I
especially received a lot of messages from friends. They said something about my
acting (laughs)
ID
Harper's Bazaar: That means the music video filmed with actor Park Jung-min was that
impressive, right?
G
Minnie: 'I Want That' music video was focused on acting rather than
dancing. It was like a movie. I usually like watching movies and as I'm an extreme 'F', I
completely relate with the emotional scenes or dialogues. Even while listening to the
song, I immediately cry when the slightly sad lyrics come out. (Laughs) I met Park
Jung-min sunbaenim for the first time on set, and his aura was amazing. We filmed a
strong love story, and as I followed the energy of that person, I also became immersed
in the story without realizing. It was interesting to experience a new side of me
depending on the other person.
Harper's Bazaar: You once played the role of an international student from Thailand in
<So Not Worth It> Do you think this experience has awakened your interest in acting?
Minnie: I was really happy when I filmed the sitcom. Since I filmed a comedy genre at
that time, I want to do a romance or a dramatic drama if I have a chance. I'm interested
in action, but I don't know if I can do it yet. But I like action movies. I really enjoyed
watching <Top Gun: Maverick> recently. I'm interested in actor Tom Cruise, so the
makeup artist recommended me. The action on the plane was thrilling and it was even
AN
better because it had a happy ending.
Harper's Bazaar: Let's go back to the song talk. Having Thai as your native language
and mainly working in Korean, I think the experience of singing and conveying emotions
_C
in English must have been different.
Minnie: When I first came to Korea, English was much more comfortable, but now I am
more familiar with Korean, so I needed to adjust to singing in English again (laughs).
SA
And also when I speak Korean, my voice becomes thinner which I don't even realize.
Should I say that it becomes cuter? When I speak English, I naturally lower my tone,
and I think it creates a pleasant mood. So this time, I tried to bring out the cool
characteristics.
_U
Harper's Bazaar: (G)I-DLE has digested various genres and performed music with a
great sense of pop, but this album feels like a more solid pop. It was also unique that
songs released in Korean weren't remade
LE
Minnie: The Korean album had a different theme or message for each track, but this
time, we worked on one theme, "Being Confidence" . We thought "let's do what we can
with confidence" and all the members practiced that hard. Keywords such as "new
ID
sides" and "challenge" also played a lot of roles. I'm the main vocalist, but through this
album, I've expanded my rap proportion. I think it was important to reach out to listeners
around the world with pop music in addition to the existing fans.
G
Harper's Bazaar: What kind of music genre are you into these days?
Minnie: I usually listen to R&B or Pop mainly. These days, I listen to hip-hop a lot. I
always find hip-hop songs when I'm in the car or in the waiting room, but there's a lot of
songs to listen to. Hip-hop has a wide range of genres, I think it's appealing that there
are various kinds of songs even if it's the same hip-hop genre. Or maybe it's because
I'm into rap.
Harper's Bazaar: You've written a lot of songs so far. What does making music mean to
Minnie?
Minnie: My process of making music starts with a melody. I hum with a chord or beat,
and if there's a melody that I'm hooked on, I bring that and complete it. Then I start
writing lyrics and I'm going to put my feelings or words in the song. I think it's a great joy
to be able to make music about my feelings or what I want to tell and let someone hear
it. I got a lot of solace from music myself, so it would be nice if someone could take
AN
solace or happiness from my music.
Harper's Bazaar: It is not easy to write songs in Korean. Are there any common words
or phrases?
_C
Minnie: Yes.. I wrote this song myself, but there is a line that I really like (laughs) It was
my first time performing solo on this tour and I sang DAHLIA. It feels different from the
group version. I wrote this song with my heart. This song starts with "So beautiful. Just
SA
looking into your eyes, I'm falling for you". That's what happens when you love
someone. It reminds me of that ticklish feeling.
Harper's Bazaar: You’ve been running without a break since debut, and now you’re in a
stable period of your career. What's your biggest happiness and worry?
_U
Minnie: Since I was young, I dreamed of being a singer. The biggest thing I wanted to
do was a world tour. It was just like a fantasy then, but now I can really do a world tour.
It's the biggest growth I've ever felt. As the years go by, I’ve been able to meet even
LE
more places and people. I’m so happy that I could sing with the fans I met there, and
get great energy. My concern is physical strength. It's not the same now as my early 20s
(laughs)
ID
Harper's Bazaar: So far, do you have any different visions of the future? What will
Minnie look like then?
G
Minnie: I hope to go to more music festivals overseas. I’ll end up doing all the things I
want to do, right? Even if I can't, I'll be better and more confident than I am now.
Harper's Bazaar: Minnie conceived her dream by watching her favorite idols, right? As
a person who has achieved their dream, is there anything you want to say to someone
who is trying to achieve it?
Minnie: I hope you don't give up your dream right away even if you fail. I think everyone
has their own timing someday. I only dreamt of this path, and in the end, I ended up all
the way here. Please do not hesitate in front of the things you like.
AN
Harper's Bazaar: You will be on the Jingle Ball Tour in the U.S. at the end of the year.
It's the first time for a K-pop girl group.
_C
Minnie: I can't believe I'll be on the same stage with my favorite artists. It's also
meaningful that we can show you a better album performance overseas. I think the only
way to show good performance is to practice hard. So I'm definitely going to run for it.
SA
Harper's Bazaar: What makes Minnie a better person?
Minnie: Thankfully, I always meet a lot of nice people. Whether it's our members, our
managers, or the people in the company, it’s everyone. And the fans, whatever I do,
they love us. Sincerely, when I see the love they give me and (G)I-DLE, it makes me
_U
want to show them a better Minnie and fill their hearts.
Harper's Bazaar: It's almost the end of the year, so let's say something to the members
who worked hard together
LE
Minnie: You (guys) worked hard this year. We should go on a third world tour next year
too. Always stay healthy and let’s work hard without getting sick next year. Ah, I’m too
ID
shy. We don't say these things usually because we’re embarrassed. When sick, we ask
how each other is doing, or when we’ve performed well, that’s what we just say. I’ll try to
be brave today though, thank you, and love you.
G
Harper's Bazaar: Minnie's wishes for Minnie
Minnie: Don't be afraid! Do everything you want to do!
