Problem Set # 2
Solve the following problems in detail, indicating each of the considerations made for their
solution.
Problem #1: A house has a composite wall of Wood, fiberglass insulation, and plaster board, as
indicated in the sketch. On cold Winter day, the convection heat transfer coefficients are 30 W/m2-
K for the inside and 60 W/m2-K for outside. Ten total wall surface area is 350 m2.
a) Determine a symbolic expression for the total thermal resistance of the wall, including
inside and outside convection effects for the prescribed conditions.
b) Determine the total heat loss through the wall.
c) If the wind were blowing violently, raising the convection heat transfer coefficient for the
outside to 300 W/m2-K, determine the percentage increase in heat loss.
d) What is the condition resistance that determines the amount of heat flow through the wall?
Problem #2: The composite wall of an oven consists of three materials, two of which are known
thermal conductivity, 𝑘𝑘𝐴𝐴 = 20 W/m-K and, 𝑘𝑘𝐶𝐶 = 50 W/m-K, and known thickness 𝐿𝐿𝐴𝐴 = 0.3 m and
𝐿𝐿𝐶𝐶 = 0.15 m.
The third material, B, which is sandwiched between materials A and C, is of known thickness, 𝐿𝐿𝐵𝐵 =
0.15 m, but unknown thermal conductivity 𝑘𝑘𝐵𝐵
Under steady-state operating conditions, measurements reveal an outer surface temperature of
𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠,𝑜𝑜 = 20 °C, an inner surface temperature of 𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠,𝑖𝑖 = 600 °C, and an oven air temperature of 𝑇𝑇∞ =
800 °C. The inside convection coefficient ℎ is known to be 25 W/m2-K. What is the thermal
conductivity of material B?
Problem #3: A wall of a kitchen oven is made of three materials placed in series: sheet metal,
insulation, and plywood. The sheet metal is 0.040 in. thick. The plywood is ¾ in. thick, and the
insulation thickness is to be determined. For economic reasons, the oven wall should transfer about
60 BTU/(hr.ft2) of heat when the inside surface temperature of the sheet metal is 500 oF. For safety
reasons, the plywood outside surface temperature should not exceed 100 oF. What is the minimum
thickness of fiberglass insulation required to meet these criteria?
Problem #4: A steam pipe is made of 2-nominal schedule 40 low carbon steel, It is covered by glass
fiber insulation that is 1 in. thick. The glass fiber is covered with aluminum foil that is 0.008 in. thick.
The steam temperature inside the pipe is 300 oF, while the outside temperature is 80 oF. The
convection coefficient between the steam and the pipe is 25 BTU/(hr.ft2.oR), and the convection
coefficient between aluminum foil and the air is 12 BTU/(hr.ft2.oR). The pipe is 30 ft long. Determine
the heat loss in BTU/hr.
Problem # 5: One hundred electrical components, each dissipating 25 W, are attached to one
Surface of a square (0.2 m x 0.2 m) cooper plate; and all the dissipated energy is transferred to water
in parallel flow over the opposite surface. A protuberance at the leading Edge of the plate acts to
trip the boundary layer, and the plate itself may be assumed to be isothermal. The water free
flowing velocity and the temperature are 2m/s and 17 °C, and the water’s thermophysical properties
may be approximated as 𝑣𝑣 = 0.96𝑥𝑥10−6 m2/s, 𝑘𝑘 = 0.620 W/mK, and 𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃 = 5.2
a) What is the temperature of the cooper plate?
b) If each component has a plate contact Surface area of 1 cm2 and the corresponding contact
resistance is 2x10-4 m2-K/W, what is the component temperature? Neglect the temperature
variation across the thickness of the copper plate.
