Course duration:
Course is available once every term from September to end of November or very beginning
of December and from January to end of April or beginning of May. Dates vary slightly each
term.

Course content (Lesson 21 to 26):
1. Understand intermediate-level conversation by native speakers:
a. More listening exercises in everyday conversations;
b. Some lectures in Chinese culture and language.
2. Communicate in intermediate-level Chinese by using accurate and clear
sentences:
a. Talking about Sports Matches;
b. Discussion on Shaoxing Opera and a past experience;
c. Making an appointment or a date with someone;
d. Talking about the Plan and Making Suggestions.
e. Talking about the Changing Circumstances and Living conditions;
f. Talking about an Incident; Making complaints.
g. Talking about language studies.
3. Reading and Writing:
a. Reading short articles (around 500 Chinese characters) on different topics;
b. Mastery of the 150 most frequently used Chinese characters and review of the
570 characters learned in Beginning Chinese courses;
The focus will be on simplified characters.
c. Write short essays starting off at about 200 characters and gradually increasing
to 400 characters.

Student Responsibilities in the Classroom (SRC)
Students are expected to:
1. attend all classes since exposure to the target language is essential for successful language
learning, and notify your class teacher with proper documentation ahead of time* if you
have to miss a class due to:
a. University-sponsored activity: a letter or e-mail signed by the professor or coach or
officer in charge and addressed to your class teacher stating the reason for your absence;
b. interview: an e-mail sent from the organization email address stating your name, the
interview date and time;
c. illness: a doctor’s note or a note from the University Health Service.
*Likewise, late work will not be accepted, except in the cases stated above and upon
production of the required documentation.

activities, in order to develop your competence in the four communication skills:
listening, speaking, reading and writing. Yes or No answers are insufficient;
