Differentiation of y Ax N by The General Rule
Differentiation of y Ax N by The General Rule
From differentiation by first principles, a general rule for differentiating 𝒂𝒙𝒏 emerges
where a and n are any constants.
𝒅𝒚
If 𝒚 = 𝒂𝒙𝒏 , then 𝒅𝒙 = 𝒂𝒏𝒙𝒏−𝟏
or
If 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒂𝒙𝒏 , then 𝒇′ (𝒙) = 𝒂𝒏𝒙𝒏−𝟏
When differentiating, results can be expressed in a number of ways.
Example:
𝑑𝑦
i. If 𝑦 = 3𝑥 2 , then 𝑑𝑥 = 6𝑥
ii. If 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 3𝑥 2 , then 𝑓 ′ (𝑥 ) = 6𝑥
iii. The differential coefficient of 3𝑥 2 is 6𝑥
iv. The derivative of 3𝑥 2 is 6𝑥, and
𝑑
v. (3𝑥 2 ) = 6𝑥

Solution:
a. From 𝒚 = 𝒂𝒙𝒏 , let 𝑎 = 5, and 𝑛 = 7. Using the general rule,
𝑑𝑦
