Identifying A Problem

This document discusses identifying and formulating a good research problem. It provides criteria for a good research problem such as being of interest to the researcher, having practical value, and being feasible to complete within the allotted time. Sources of research problems include personal experience, print/mass media, consultations, and nature. A problem becomes researchable when there is no known answer, possible solutions are untested or contradictory, or an explanation is needed for a phenomenon's existence. When formulating a research problem statement, clarity, organization, specificity, well-defined scope, conciseness, and measurability should be considered.

Identifying a
Research Problem

Research problem – heart of every research project

A problem is a
– perceived difficulty
– a feeling of discomfort with the way
things are
– discrepancy between what should be and
what is

Criteria for a good research problem

1. It should be of great interest to the researcher

2. It should have a practical value
3. It should not be over-researched
4. It should carry a novel idea
5. It can be finished within allotted time
6. It should be within the knowledge of the researcher
7. It should not carry legal or moral impediments
Sources of research problem

1. personal experience or first hand knowledge and actual problems encountered in the workplace or in the
community
2. Print & mass media, books, thesis, dissertations
3. Consultations
4. Nature

What are the possible sources of ideas when looking for a problem?

People Places Things

Friends Library Soil

Teachers Research institutions Water
Family School Air
Scientists/ Community Plants
experts Museums Animals
Community/ Parks Books
School officials Home
Professionals River
Internet

A problem becomes researchable when

-there is no known answer to it
- possible solution are untested or
seemingly contradicting
- when existence of a phenomenon
requires explanation

Formulating a Research Problem

Several things that must be considered in making a STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
a. clarity
b. organization
c. specificity
d. well-defined scope
e. conciseness
f. measurability

Consider the problem: Integrated Utilization of Banana Stalk for Mushroom and Bio-pulp Production

Main Problem:
Evaluate the performance of banana stalks as substrate for mushroom and bio-pulp production.
Sub-problems:
1. How does banana stalks perform as substarte for mushroom production without the conventional
mushroom substrate additives?:
a. Mycelliation?
b. Time to develop mycellia?
c. Time to produce mushroom head?
d. Mushroom yield?
2. How does the mushroom substrate perform for bio-pulp production:
a. Properties of bio-pulp
b. Physical and mechanical properties of handsheets
c. Application of banana sheets
