Speaking Activity : Asking and Giving information about past events
Sometimes we need to ask about people’s experiences in the past. In this case, we can make
questions using past tense.
For example, we can ask:
• Question: Did you go to the national park?
Answer: Yes, I did.
• Question: When did you go to the national park?
Answer: I went there a week ago.
• Question: How did you go there?
Answer: I went there by bus.
In the first example, the question starts with ‘Did’. This type of question can be answered with ‘Yes’
or ‘’No’.
Question word ‘when’ In second question is to ask for information about time. Question word ‘how’
in third question is to ask for information about in what ways.
In answering the questions, we can use positive or negative sentences.
Positive sentences:
• Yes, I went to the national park.
• I went to the national park.
• I went there by bus.
Negative sentences:
• No, I didn’t go to the national park.
• I didn’t go to the national park a week ago.
• I didn’t go there by bus.
Didn’t is a contraction form of did not. Did + not is used with all subjects in negative past tense

Once upon a time in west java, lived a writer king who had a beautiful daughter. Her name was
Dayang Sumbi. She liked weaving very much. Once she was weaving a cloth when one of her tools fell to the
ground. She was very tired, at the same time she was too lazy to take it. Then she just shouted out loudly.
Anybody there! Bring me my tool. I will give you special present. If you are female. I will consider you as my
sister if you are male, I will marry you sunddenly a male dog, its name was Tumang came. He brought her the
falling tool. Dayang Sumbi was very surprised. She regretted her words but she could not deny it. So she had
marry Tumang and leave her father. Then they lived in a small village. Several months later they had a son.
His name was Sangkuriang. He was a handsome and healthy boy.
Sangkuriang liked hunting very much, especially deer. He often hunted to the wood usying his arrow. When he
went hunting , Tumang was always with him.
One day Dayang Sumbi wanted to have deer’s heart so she asked Sangkuriang to hunt for a deer.
Then Sangkuriang when to the wood with his arrow and his faithful dog. Tumang, but afher several days in the
wood Sangkuriang could not find any deer. Then where all disappeared. Sangkuriang was exhausted and
desperate. He did not want to disappoint her mother so he killed Tumang. He did not know that Tumang was
his father. Tumang’s heart to her mother. But Dayang Sumbi knew that it was Tumang’s heart. She was so
angry that she could not control her emotion. She hit Sangkuriang at his head Sangkuriang was wounded.
There was a scar in his head. She also repelled her son. Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.
Many years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man. He wandered everywhere. One day
he arrived. at his own village but he did not realize it. There he met Dayang Sumbi. At the time Dayang Sumbi
was given an eternal beauty by God so she stayed young forever. Both of them did know each other. So they
fall in love and then they decided to marry. But then Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on Sangkuriang’s head.
She knew that Sangkuriang was his son. It was impossible for them to marry. She told him but he did not
beliave her. He wished that they marry soon. So Dayang Sumbi gave very difficult condition. She asked
Sangkuriang to build a lake and a boat in one night! She said she needed that for honeymoon.
Sangkuriang agreed. With the help of genie and spiritis, Sangkuriang tired to build them. By midnight he had
completed the lake by building a dam in Citarum river. Then he started making the boat. It was almost dawn
when he almost finished it. Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept watching on him. She was very worried when she
knew this. So she made lights in the east. Then the spiritis thought that was already dawn. It was time for them
to leave. They left Sangkuriang alone. Without their help he could not finish the boat.
Sangkuriang was angry. He kicked the boat. Then the boat turned upside down. It, leter, became Mounth
Tangkuban Perahu. Which means an upside-down boat. From a distant the mount really looks like an upside
down boat.

Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Cinderella. She lived with her step mother and two
step sisters.
The step mother and sisters were conceited and bad tempered. They treated Cinderella very badly. Her step
mother made Cinderella do the hardest works in the house; such as scrubbing the floor, cleaning the pot and pan
and preparing the food for the family. The two step sisters, on the other hand, did not work about the house.
Their mother gave them many handsome dresses to wear.
One day, the two step sister received an invitation to the ball that the king’s son was going to give at
the palace. They were excited about this and spent so much time choosing the dresses they would wear. At last,
the day of the ball came, and away went the sisters to it. Cinderella could not help crying after they had left.
“Why are crying, Cinderella?” a voice asked. She looked up and saw her fairy godmother standing beside her,
“because I want so much to go to the ball” said Cinderella. “Well” said the godmother,”you’ve been such a
cheerful, hardworking, uncomplaining girl that I am going to see that you do go to the ball”.
Magically, the fairy godmother changed a pumpkin into a fine coach and mice into a coachman and two
footmen. Her godmother tapped Cinderella’s raged dress with her wand, and it became a beautiful ball gown.
Then she gave her a pair of pretty glass slippers. “Now, Cinderella”, she said; “You must leave before
midnight”. Then away she drove in her beautiful coach.
Cinderella was having a wonderfully good time. She danced again and again with the king’s son.
Suddenly the clock began to strike twelve, she ran toward the door as quickly as she could. In her hurry, one of
her glass slipper was left behind.
A few days later, the king’ son proclaimed that he would marry the girl whose feet fitted the glass
slipper. Her step sisters tried on the slipper but it was too small for them, no matter how hard they squeezed their
toes into it. In the end, the king’s page let Cinderella try on the slipper. She stuck out her foot and the page
slipped the slipper on. It fitted perfectly.
Finally, she was driven to the palace. The king’s son was overjoyed to see her again. They were married and live
happily ever after.

In a small village, a girl lives with her mother. The girl is very beautiful. Everyday she puts on
make-up and wears her best clothes. She doesn't like to help her mother work in a field. The girl is
very lazy.
One day, the mother asks the girl to accompany her to go to the market to buy some food.
At first the girl refuses, but the mother persuades her by saying they are going to buy new clothes.

answers the girl. The mother is very sad, but she doesn't say anything. The girl and the mother meet
other people. "Hello, beauty. Who is the woman behind you?" asks them again. Again the girl
answers that her mother is her servant. She always says that her mother is her servant every time
they meet people.
At last, the mother cannot hold the pain anymore. She prays to God to punish her daughter.
God answers her prayer. Slowly, the girl's leg turns into stone. The process continues to the upper
part of the girl's body. The girl is very panicky. "Mother, please forgive me!" she cries and ask her
mother to forgive her. But it's too late. Her whole body finally becomes a big stone. Until now
people still can see tears falling down the stone. People then call it the crying stone or in Indonesian
mean batu menangis.

Timun Mas
Once upon a time, an old widow wanted a daughter to live with her in the village. Knowing her wish, a
huge giant visited her house. He gave her a cucumber seed. He told the old widow that there will be a
a baby inside the cucumber. The giant promised to come back for the baby once she turned sixteen.
The old widow planted the seed in her yard. By the next morning, a cucumber grew. She cut it open
and found a baby girl inside. The old widow was so happy and named the baby Timun Mas. Day by
day, Timun Mas grew into a beautiful lady. The widow remembered what the giant had warned her.
So when Timun Mas turned sixteen, the widow told her to run into the jungle with a bag of salt. “You
must not let the giant catch you,” the widow cried out as Timun Mas ran into the jungle.
The giant came and asked the widow for Timun Mas. The widow refused to tell him and so he went
into the jungle. He angrily called out for Timun Mas. Timun Mas heard his voice and ran away from
him. The giant chased her. Timun Mas threw the salt that the widow had given her. It turned the jungle
into a muddy field. The muddy field swallowed the giant and he was never seen again. Finally, Timun
Mas returned home and lived happily ever after with the old widow.
